That article is a joke. It's not even real journalism.

When did recruiters say this? Which recruiter said this? Which study found that they had said this?

Minorities are under represented in the military..particularly the officer Corps and combat arms jobs. The military actively goes out of its way to change this. A rather large scandal has hit the Naval Academy which has clearly shown that less qualified minority applicants are being accepted in order to meet quotas because the Navy/Marine Corps has an abnormally high number of white volunteers. The author of your article is misinformed at best, and judging by the website, likely purposelly skewing the truth.

Where are his facts? This is purely the author's opinion and is unsupported. His clear political slant hurts his credibility even more.

Look at this silliness. This article has no substantiated facts.

    The author:
What kind of credentials are those?

Anne Marlowe graduated from Harvard and Columbia. She's published several books and hundreds of articles. She's also a journalist who reports around the world. Not some Adj. Professor.

Either way, she backed up her assertions, your author didn't.

Your website is also has a clear political agenda as NPR descirbes it in the following

    http://www.npr.org/programs/atc/features/2001/jul/010702.karr.html

I disputed your artciel, dispute mine. Show me howthe facts she listed are incorrect.

    You conveniently missed this bit:

"Associate Professor - Literature; Director - Chicano/a~Latino/a Arts and Humanities Program
Areas of Expertise: Chicano/Mexican cultures in the United States, history and role of Latinos in the U.S. military, Spanish and Latin American concepts of "race," U.S. social movements".

I alluded to him being an adj professor....you conveniently missed the multiple books and hundreds of political/IR articles by my author.

Yes, I suppose three is "multiple".

» How to Stop Time: Heroin from A to Z
» The Book of Trouble: A Romance
» David Galula: His Life and Intellectual Context

I particularly like the romance novel:

"A sexy, intimate and fearless account of a shattering love affair between a charistmatic Afghan man and a Jewish American writer infatuated with his culture ... "

She writes for several large newspapers published around the nation and the world. At the very least it means she had some journalistic integrity. I'm also not using her to back up my point, I'm using the legitimate studies done that she cites in her article (something an extensively published writer knows how to do). Your article is full of opinions and wild unbacked statements.....and one "study" that is too broad to be of any significance.

Nice political attack piece, with no real facts or information.

Kindly explain this then. I first joined the military in 1982. I come from an upper middle-class family (or lower upper class), and could have gone to college if I wanted to. Instead I choose to join the Marines. And picked Infantry no less.

Now fast forward 24 years. I was now working as a computer engineer, in just what your article describes as a country that makes below the national average (rural SE Alabama). However, I was making considerably above the local average wage. And I once again choose to walk away from this well paying high-tech job in 2007 and rejoin the military.

That article was giving very skewed impressions. Like how it talked about how a lot of those that joined lived in areas where the "average income was below the national average". That is a pure nonsense statement, intended to skew the data.

YOu do not like in the US, you are not in the US military. So what would you know about it, other then what you read from your partaisan web sites? I have served with people who lived on the street before enlisting. I have also served with one person who's father bought them a brand new Jaguar for graduating from their advanced training. And another that got a trust worth in the 7 digit figures for successfully completing a 4 year career.

I have always loved when people look at the military, and claim to see some kind of "racism" in it. Of course, most times they tend to see that in the Officer corps.

That is made up entire of college graduates. And is not a good view of the general population to begin with. But I can tell you, in my Battery, we have 5 officers. 1 White, 1 Black, 1 Asian, and 2 Hispanic. If you add in the Warrant Officers, then it becomes 1 White, 2 Black, 1 Asian, and 3 Hispanic.

Wow, seems like in my Battery, Whites are a minority.

ANd if you go up to the Battalion level, I have served under 3 Battalion Commanders in the last 4 years, 2 Hispanic males, and 1 Asian female.

However, of the 6 First Sergeants in my Battalion, 4 of the 6 are Black, and 1 is Hispanic.

And of the 4 Battalion Command Sergeant Majors, all 4 have been Black. However, of the 3 Operations Sergeant Majors I have worked with, 3 out of 4 were White, one was Hispanic.

Is the system racist? Honestly, I don't think so. But if I thought it was, I am sure I could use these statictics to make some claims that it was.

No problem, I can explain that for you quite easily.

The article does not say 100% of American soldiers are "those whose career options are severely limited."

    Anything else you need explained?

Your articles statistic is pretty worthless. When you consider the wealth disparity in America, a lot more people are below the average income than are above it. This is why your author and his source are wrong. My author cited statistics that take quintiles into account. The data isn't thrown off by a high standard deviation.

You've provided no further evidence to back up any of your points. The above one liner is a concession of defeat. It's what a 8 year old does when they're losing an argument.

Here's the distribution of U.S. income earners in 2009. The average income for the U.S. was about 42,000 dollars per year.

You can clearly see that well over half of all Americans are below the average. That AP study is misleading and completely non-scientific.

Nope, I'm afraid not (good try though).

I'm not accepting your biased opinion on this matter, or your romance-novel-writing source.

I've provided credible evidence and you can't handle it. Sorry old boy.

I provided a reputable source and study that contradicted the notion that U.S. soldiers are improportionately poor.

You provided a source that disputed this (poorly).

I listed several different sources and picked apart your article in several different places.

Rather than debate the issue or try and dispute my article, or provide another source for your assertion, you claimed it was just my opinion and effectively gave up the debate.

This is where we stand now. That ball is in your court. Lets see some evidence, or at least a decent argument.

Hell, it is easy to see where a lot of this comes from. And why it is a worthless statistic.

To begin with, 24% of Americans are18 and under. So of course, they are making under the average wage.

Then throw in those who are over 65. Most of them are no longer in the work force, so they no longer make a wage. They make up 13% of the population.

So automatically, 42% of the US population is generally making "below the average wage".

This is how statistics lie. You can phrase something which is 100% accurate, but not honest. And I love when somebody who is not American and has never served a single day in the military, and can sit back and tell us how we do not know what we are talking about.

There's a film out as part of the Sundance film festival, that is entitled "The Invisible War." It's a documentary with interviews and stories about females who were sexually assaulted while in the service and the military did not bring the alleged perpetrators to justice. The women left the service both traumatized and with a sense of betrayal. This is Robert Redford's brain child...this film festival, and typically the documentaries that are screened have far left agendas. Redford himself is a far left politically minded person. I'm not dismissing the documentary as "junk" journalism and clearly if the military is having a problem with this issue, they need to address it. Broad brushing the services as an institution that condones this sort of criminal behavior doesn't help solve the problem.

So nearly half of the 2,800 felonies were sex crimes, so roughly 1,400.

Military population is roughly 1.5 million.

    Thats .00093%

    Australia

    Australia

The Australian Women's Safety Survey conducted by the Bureau of Statistics in 1996 involved a random sample 6,300 women aged 18 and over. It produced incidence finding of 1.9 per cent for sexual assault in the previous 12 months. Known men accounted for over two-thirds of assailants (68%). Only 15% of the assaulted women in the sample reported to the police.[53]

Are you seriously implying that a civvy would try to rape a woman who is trained to kill people in hand-to-hand combat? If the attacker has the same training, then it's understandable, but a civilian? Seriously?

Don't believe what you see in the movies. The overwhelming majority of female service members have very little hand to hand combat training. A 120lb female service member is still just as vulnerable against a 200lb civilain male.

That's an "interesting" scale you have going there. The first 10,000 of income gets you halfway across the page, then the other 990,000 is crammed into the other half. That wouldn't be to give a misleading impression, would it?

A scale from 0 to 1,000,000 or beyond would be massive. The graph has been compacted to fit the page. It doesn't affect the data though, clearly well over half the U.S. populatoin makes below "average" income. It's pretty common sense really.

What on Earth ever leads you to believe that everybody who serves in the military is "trained to kill people in hand-to-hand combat"? That is absolute nonsense if I ever heard it.

Here is the truth. Only about maybe 2 in 10 is ever trained to ever participate in any kind of combat at all. Period. I am serving right now, and have a combat deployment under my belt. And I still would rather leave 80% of those I serve with back in the US if we ever deploy.

Because I know that most would either cringe and run at the first shot, or be more of a risk to me then to the enemy. And that is true with most of the Army. Heck, look at the 507th Maintenance Company (now F. Co, 5-52 ADA). Only 1 or 2 had ever served in a real combat MOS, and totally fell to pieces when exposed to real combat.

The closest that 99.5% of Soldiers ever get to "Hand to hand" training is what is laughingly called "Combatives". And that is not really deadly at all, more like glorified wrestling.

Hell, my son has never served a day in the military in his life. And he could kick the fanny of anybody I serve with, even those trained in Level 4 Combatives. Of course, he also has gone to the Nationals for Tae Kwon Do. And there are probably more people who have taken Martial Arts training then there are members of the US Military.

Yes, a few hours worth. You need a heck of a lot more then that (months if not years) to give most females the ability to fight off effectively an attackers that weighs 50% or more more then they do.
