Well, it could have just been a matter of not caring.

Maybe they really did know better and just are sick of bothering with these things. I know I probably would be.

I mean, really. Getting stuck in Afghanistan for a year or two would be pretty crappy to have to deal with, and when you've got a local population that is basically tribal people, I'd grow a bit tired of dealing with whatever superstitions or customs they have.

We really shouldn't be there in the first place. We're trying to civilize a population that's not worth the effort.

 

I wouldn't be surprised if they knew, and they probably will be disciplined, but ultimately, it really doesn't matter.

Look, maybe sometime in the next 500 years or so, we'll evolve past religion, but it's not going to happen in our lifetimes, so we just need to adapt to it.

They have to care it's their job, they knew when they signed up they could end up anywhere and be doing just about any duty.

If you don't like kids you don't become teacher... if you're afraid of flying don't sign on to be a pilot...if you don't want to get shot at, sent to third world country wars don't join the US military because that's what they do.

 

Interpretation certainly makes a difference when it comes to religion, but the bolded part is a problem.

It took a while for Christianity to evolve to a state where it was compatible with a modern, free society. Islam, in many forms, is not yet compatible. It's why Islamism is the biggest obstacle to social reform in the Middle East and South Asia.
