Serfin had the best idea in this thread:

    Banning HFCS works for me

How about when people stick their grubby hands into your wallet for skateboarding injuries? Shouldn't they be banned too? They would be preventable by banning skateboards. Surely High School sports falls in this category.

Every obese, sick person who developes a condition as a result of over-indulgence pushes everyone else's premiums up. If something which someone else does negatively affects you in the pocket are you just going to shrug your shoulders?

Seems more sensible, but the stereotype of Americans eating / drinking huge portions continues.

I don't think it's a stereotype. Any number of my friends who have visited America are astounded by just how much gets piled on their plates in restaurants.

No doubt this is an idiotic proposal, but has anyone considered that it's Michael Bloomberg's idea? You'll recall that he was elected Mayor by running as a republican. Now he's basically an independent. Granted, public health is more a liberal cause than a conservative one, but are liberals really defending this idea or is it just Bloomberg showing his lack of sobriety again? (Remember, when your a billionaire you can do whatever you want!)

Like I said a relative running an eatery in New York City plans if this passed to have the white cups for one refill and the red ones for unlimited refills both 16 oz. and mark the refillable ones with a date and time stamp those useable only in his place. Refills already go to the counter so its not going to change his deli/hot dog place policy wise. And if I recall no one is bringing up multiple refills in the city ordinance yet and could one enforce that.

Right now one can go to any fast food place and refill away at the stations in most cases a smaller cup used because its cheaper to get the value soda and refill away.

How? By not marketing directly? See how well that did for smoking. People still smoke in movies or in ads and it looks cool, I guess.

It is an illusion to think you can control people when there are so many different influences. Makkede over there said she likes Pepsi so much there could be dead baby in it and she'd drink it. People know chocolate is grown on plantations where children are worked like slaves and they still eat it.

I agree with Serf, too. The only thing you can do is remove the HFCSs.

I would change plans or vote people into office who would improve the healthcare system, not regulate people's daily lives. It sounds like you are in favor of having the government regulate people's eating and every other habit in their lives.

Let me know when the sellers of skateboards are tryin to 'upsize injuries' like fast food joints do every time you walk in and buy a meal. "Would you like to Biggie Size that for only 89 cents more?" When they do, we'll talk.

One of the problem is, everytime you order a meal from a fast food joint, they are always pushing their bigger portion sizes on you.

Now we are so used to having a 32+ oz pop, we think its normal to put that much crap in us.

Wait, are you saying that I can goto McDonalds and for the same price get a larger soda than I used to? Oh the horror of getting more for your dollar!

BTW no one is forcing you to super size, eat your whole meal, nor drink all the soda. There is also nothing stopping someone from ordering two sodas since one may not be as much as they want to drink. It's hard to see why anyone would support this bull(*)(*)(*)(*) law. So long as refills are free/less and you can purchase more than one soda at a time it does absolutely nothing. It's also not the job of the government to tell business how much soda they can sell to an individual. That's an insane precedent to set in the 'land of the free'. Why can't people just leave others the (*)(*)(*)(*) alone. What is so hard about minding your own business?

It doesn't have anything to do with sodas. It has to do with teaching Americans their place. Now, on your knees and you better like it. We've seen others pick popular enemies to build popular support till all were enslaved and it's happening again. The rich, inferior races, and unpopular lifestyles are all good targets for despots.

When you're a billionaire, it gets to your head. You assume everyone wants your sage recommendations.

Anyone else remember when San Francisco passed the law prohibiting free toys with fast-food orders? It was also an attempt to discourage kids from getting fat from Micky Dee's. It took the city something like two years to formulate, refine, and finally pass the law. The day it took effect, McDonald's announced that its happy meals were now ten cents cheaper, but for only ten cents more they would include an awesome plastic toy! And that is what happens when overreaching lawmakers get served by the free market.

It has nothing to do with being a billionaire or even simply rich. It has to do with being part of the self-styled elites who know best and intend to force you to comply. A few years ago a total stranger leaned over in a restaurant and said, "You shouldn't eat so much salt." How does one address such incredibile presumption politely. Mayor Bloomberg said he wants to force us to accept..

You should try hanging around more rich people. Of course there are exceptions to every rule, but for the most part they're brilliant about everything.

And when this doesn't work (which it won't, several workarounds have already been suggested, the most effective being the free refill which completely nullifies it), what next? I'm getting an image in my head of Orwell's 1984, where people had to get up and do exercise every day under the watchful eye of Big Brother- for their own good, of course.
