nothing bad but just curious. driving home from work tonight i noticed passing by a few neighborhoods muslim women walking with their children. its a 30 minute drive getting home so it wasnt just in one area, it was near my neighborhood too. just wondering if something is going on in the muslim world tonight or something, i mean its a school night so its kind of late to have kids out at midnight lol.
Ramadan. Muslims are not supposed to eat while the sun is up. Most Muslims then have a large meal after the sun has set, and they can certainly last until midnight. I joined some friends for a Ramadan buffet at the start of Ramadan (frankly, I didn't know it was still going on). They have lots of tasty food.
oh ok i figured something like that was going on. ok cool, thanks for the answer. im guessing by my house there is a Indian restaurant that stays open rather late, would they go there??? and why not just drive lol???
Well, there are a lot of Muslims in India, so it wouldn't surprise me if they had something Ramadan-related going on. The place I went to was a Syrian place. It is a fast food take-away on the outside, but around Ramadan, they open the inner room and have a buffet in there, so I guess even a usually small restaurant can have lots of people in it. As for the walking, I have no idea. All I can do is speculate, maybe they were taking the kids home early because they had school in the morning? Maybe they didn't live far away. And whatever ancestry they might have that makes them observe Ramadan might not include the very American tradition of driving everywhere you're supposed to go.
Seems reasonable that the mothers might want to take the kids home early while their fathers stayed on for a bit. Also perhaps they wanted to walk the big meal off, or after the excitement of a big family meal they wanted to walk the children a little so they'd work off their energy and excitement and go to sleep quickly when they got home (because they had school in the morning). It's also not impossible, of course, that some of them aren't the most 'fundamentalist' of Muslims, and haven't taken the car because they were having a couple of beers with their meal - Muslims aren't that different from Christians, and not all of them fully and completely observe absolutely everything they are theoretically supposed to all of the time (some of them do like a beer or two now and again)!
home early?? it was almost 1am when i got home lol. eh but anyways people will do what they do. just wish they would be more careful because right before i get to my neighborhood there is an unlit stretch of road with no sidewalk they were on. they did have these lil indicator lights but with it being so dark its all i could see until i was right on them. hell with the kids in tow i thought something might be wrong so i was kind of wanting to pull over and see if they wanted help, but then i saw another group and just wondered why they were out so late. but Ramadan explains everything. them kids not gonna wanna wake up in the morning haha.
hey now im not judging, was just curious. didnt know if something like a religious holiday was going on or if there was something wrong maybe. its not very often, other than halloween, i see people late late at night walking their kids on the town lol. our muslim population has most definitely grown then because this is the first time i noticed it. no biggy, just like i said to Swensson i think they should be a bit more careful walking at night, its hard t see people on the side of the road in certain parts around the area i live in.
If the US is anything like the UK, you'll find many Indian restaurants are actually Pakistani owned and the food is often halal or they have a halal choice.
Fair comment - 'Indian' in that context tends to refer to the Indian sub-continent, as opposed to the country of India itself. Depends on the where you are somewhat, though, and what the origins of the largest local formerly-sub-continental community happens to be - most of the 'Indian' restaurants near me seem to be Bangladeshi owned and run (which also makes them likely to be Muslims, of course).
