Actually your right, but a shield against more than common crime. So many of us own firearms over here, our government is leery when it comes to us. That is the way it should be.
You have your ways, we have ours. I would not expect or want you to change your core beliefs, or societal constuct, to appease another country.
I'm sure you would have the same respect as given.

gun control advocates are thinking for gun owners?
Your are right again, that is a myth...............unless......you have
......... the facts, data, scholarly reviews....anything at all to back this statement up?

From your quoted article..."we examined the extent and nature of offensive gun use. We found that firearms are used far more often to frighten and intimidate than they are used in self-defense."

If that is true, then having a gun for self-defense (a shield) makes pretty good sense.

    WOW!!!

I make a joke you lot get hot under the collar and then when I ask if your sense of humour has been affected you lot start accusing me of everything short of baby killing - no wait you accuse me of that already.........

But I really expect nothing less because of the hostility that any degree of questioning of these myths provokes

Here's what happened, I responded to a serious topic in a serious forum with a serious response, and you made a generalization about me that was untrue and then resorted to an insult while actually avoiding an on topic response, when I pointed this out you continued to make off topic generalizations about me and insult me while still failing to address the topic. I came into this thread to discuss the topic and have not been hostile in the least. Don't make a thread about a topic unless you're actually willing to engage in civil discourse about it. Now, instead of making assumptions about the person you're talking to and insulting them just because you hold different views on a certain subject than them, try to make a respectful, factual, on topic argument against their position. Let me make it easy for you:
If you can't respond without resorting to personal attacks, false generalizations and trolling such as this:
I'm going to ask the thread be closed because if you refuse to attempt civil discourse in your own thread what else was it made for besides trolling?

    Let's replay the conversation then

(((((((((((((((sigh))))))))))))) What I was trying to do was say - I have no problem with people owning guns - what I have a problem with is when people tell me they NEED the gun or they will be killed

Then I made a joke about American dress sense - and to be honest you lot have NEVER lived down the invention of the "Hawaiian Shirt" What I realise now rereading it that my attempt to insert lols at the end of the sentence got changed by my MAC to lola so perhaps you did not see it was meant in jest

So what's your point? Do you expect all guns to magically vanish? Wouldn't you want to have a gun if confronted by an armed criminal bent on doing you harm? What is the advantage to being unarmed in such a situation?

I think that people use self defense as an excuse to own a gun.

If we were really honest most men own guns because they are fun to shoot.

I own one gun for livestock protection and putting a sick animal to sleep. I can't see spending a fortune on a vet when a .20 bullet will do the job.

I never use the thing...it just sits there.

More or less what my step-dad said, that there is a .25 cent solution to any dog problem.

I would not advise shooting someone elses dog...unless you warn them first.

We had a problem with two big dogs (one killed my daughters cat) and we told the owners to either lock them up or I would shoot them.

They locked the dogs up and we have had no more problems.

Oh it was just a saying he had, a metaphor for something I guess.
Like making a big expensive ceremony out of something with a simple solution.

He wouldnt as the song went, harm a fly that belonged to someone else.
