What would happen if the moon were suddenly replaced with Jupiter? I have my ideas, what do you think ?
If Jupiter were replaced by the moon, it probably wouldn't mean jack to us, since it's so far way. It would lose its moons, and maybe affect the orbit of nearby planets. That's all. I think you mean to say this in reverse, i.e. what if the moon were replaced by Jupiter. Anyway, that's what your picture seems to indicate.
There would be extremely intense tidal forces. Many coastal cities would get flooded during high tide.
If Jupiter were suddenly only a quarter million miles away, it would only be that far away for however long it would take us to fall into it. Not quite sure how to do that calculations for that, but certainly less than a day. Unless of course, the Earth were somehow placed in orbit around Jupiter. But I'm not sure how something as massive as the Earth could occupy a stable orbit only a quarter million miles away from an object as massive as Jupiter. We'd have to be traveling at an incredible velocity, and as others have pointed out, the tidal forces would be extraordinary. Every fault zone on the planet would tear apart, and it might even be sufficient to break the planet up, if it didn't just suck us right in.
Interesting comments, Gravity and the electro-magnetic force forces are both inverse square law, meaning that it's four times stronger per unit of distance. So if you move so if the distance gets smaller by 4, the force changes by 1/(1/4)^2 = 16, meaning the force is 16 times larger. So maybe speeding up the orbit by some larger amount could off set it (say Io's orbit). Also the moon Io is about the same distance as the moon is to earth. " Jupiter on its moon Io are so large that the solid surface of Io is raised and lowered by hundreds of meters twice in each rotational period.". I would guess that if the earth was moving quick enough, it could continue to move around Jupiter; say it slowly fell in, evenually it would be torn up into an acreation disk much like Saturn's rings.. Another example is Phobos, which in some long time in the future will end up falling into Mars thanks to it's tidal forces. So I think the tidal forces would not destroy Earth but destroy Earth's life (super volcanoes everywhere), it would prob. make the Perminan Event look like a picnic.
Yeah it would be even crazier than that because we would be demoted to moon status.. lol - - - Updated - - - Yeah I was wondering about it's 20K times strong super radiation belts, would they block and turn off the Northern lights or intensify them in some way ? hmm I'm thinking former.
All complex life on Earth would be destroyed by radiation exposure in short order. Gravitational force changes would increase volcano and tectonic activity to the extent that the surface would be reworked over time to resemble Io. The atmosphere would quickly escape into space, leading to a frozen ice world before it was broken up into a ring system similar to Saturn.......Probably.
All these answers can only be speculative, because it really matters about which location in the moon's orbit in which you're going to suddenly insert Jupiter.

First, Jupiter would could not orbit the Earth, since our gravity is too weak to be a center of gravity. Smaller objects always orbit the larger (if they are in orbit). Second, if you just replace the Moon With Jupiter at the same orbit, the earth would be well within the lower atmosphere of Jupiter and would cease to exist. just compare the size of the two planets (click on the image).
Not impressed with your post at all to be honest. Issue #1: Not to be a total dick but can you see the picture ? Do you really think we are talking about the Earth inside of Jupiter ? No we want to place it 250K miles away from Jupiter's surface. I think it would kind of boring to talk about a planet instantly being torn up inside of Jupiter. You agree ? So you are wrong there. Issue #2: You claim that Jupiter placed on the Earth's moon's orbit would immediately envelop the Earth? Really? So you didn't even do your homework with regard to that either. Jupiter has a diameter of 90,000 miles at it's oblate equator. You divide that in half and it's 45,000 miles. SO now the Moon is suddenly less than 45K miles away from Or is it that your math a little fuzzy? Issue #3: You speak nothing of the dynamics of the objects in terms of their center mass between them, in other words, the Earth's orbit would change. Perhaps you didn't mention this because you thought incorrectly about everything else but it should still be pointed out.
Then you have to be specific as to what you mean. The moon is 250,000 miles from earth, since you did not specify, the assumption is that jupiter would be 250,000 miles away. The earth would be forced into orbit around Jupiter or shot off into space by a slingshot effect if it were to suddenly replace the moon, simple physics. Your whole supposition is balmy.
