Man Arrested For Facebook Post About George Zimmerman Verdict

The Huffington Post | By Cavan Sieczkowski | 07/23/2013
Excerpts:

“A man was arrested for making a terroristic threat after he posted a Facebook status about the George Zimmerman verdict. "Kill all whites," the post read, in part.

Remel Newson, a 20-year-old Queens, N.Y., man, was angry after a jury in Sanford, Fla., on July 13 found Zimmerman not guilty in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black teenager.

Newson took to Facebook to air his grievances, posting a status update about how blacks cannot get justice, according to WNYC. He used the hashtag "#killall whites" and wrote, "let's kill cops nd neighborhood watcher [sic]."

Read the full post below (via Gothamist):

<BLAC N****S CNT GET NO TYPE OF JUSTICE FUCCIN WIT DESE CRACCER'S #KILLALL WHITES DATS DA TYPE OF S**T I'M ON F**K DIS BEEF S**T LET'S KILL COPS ND NEIGHBO RHOOD WATCHER #FACTS DAT>

A New York Police Department officer monitoring Facebook saw the post on July 17. Hours later, the Queens man was arrested for “making a terroristic threat," a felony, according to WNYC. He was later charged with unlawful possession of marijuana.

Following the arrest, Newson admitted to police he "f**ked up" and made a "stupid mistake," according to DNAinfo New York.

However, his lawyer, Tasha Lloyd-Garcia, claims her client copied and pasted the "terroristic" post from another person's profile onto his. She is "disturbed" over how the NYPD obtained a search warrant based solely off the posts.

"It doesn't seem like it would meet the standard for probable cause to get a search warrant," she told DNAinfo. "There's no common scheme or plans to carry anything out."

Arrests over Facebook posts are not unheard of. In February, Texas teen Justin Carter was jailed after he made a sarcastic threat in a Facebook comment to "shoot up a school full of kids and eat their ... hearts" while arguing with a friend over a video game. A woman from Canada saw the post and alerted authorities.

Carter was taken into custody and charged with making a terroristic threat. On July 11, he was freed on $500,000 bail after nearly six months in jail. “

......

IMO: While I don’t approve of what Newson said, I don’t think it was worthy of an arrest in a country that professes freedom of speech. His epistle was a venting of the way he feels and he has every right to vent...everyone else is, so what is it about Newson that would ring bells to paranoid cops that would merit an immediate arrest?

With the rapid evolution we are experiencing, it is entirely normal to vent and what place is better place to vent than the Internet?

Soon we will be a country of Internet shills that will report to the local paranoid swat team the plans being made by ‘terrorists’ to blow up the country or something when all he is doing is acting out his frustration at the changes going on in our society.

Another disturbing scenario was with teenager Justin Carter who in February had sarcastically mentioned ‘shooting up a school full of kids..” which was monitored by a freakin’ Canadian paranoid woman and reported to police. Justin spent 6 months in jail on ‘making a terrorist threat’ and was finally let out on $500,000 bail.

Instead of going after teenagers that are probably smoking pot, why don’t the police go after non-American students that are here going to our best colleges while they refine their bomb- making skills.

Some time down the road weed activists will claim this kid is jail for simple possession of pot. BOOK IT.

oh and certainly the idiot deserves to go to jail. Freedom of speech does not include the freedom to incite violence, it never has.

You really don't think this deserves at least a night in prison? "Kill all" anything is pretty much a call to violence, and certainly is excluded from first amendment protections. I don't think the guy deserves to face much more punishment, but a night in jail at the least seems fine. There's a similar case going on now where a 19 year old said something pretty horrible as a joke on his facebook page after a round in an online shooter and he wound up prison for months. He's only out now because a wealthy good samaritan posted his bail. You say stupid, violent stuff in public, you're going to get into trouble. This wasn't political commentary, it was something that could easily be interpreted as a threat.

I'm really beginning to believe that people who defend kids like this or that Adam Kokesh moron and others like him WANT violence.

They don't want to discuss anything or work out anything, they want violence and that is why they defend these morons.

So do you approve of shouting fire in a crowded movie theater, there are limits to free speech and threatening to murder and inciting violence is against the law. Drop the pot charge now!

Why is it nowadays every time I hear "freedom of speech" it's in relation to something totally crazy and off the rails with no intellectual worth? I think they should make more arrests like this and publicize them. They shouldn't be felonies though. That's taking it a bit too far. Some time on Riker's Island waiting to get bailed out will give these hot heads time to chill out.

Not me, I'd give them one thousand hours of community service. And I would enforce that to the maximum.

The black panthers ceased being a functioning organization a long time ago. A number of their members were arrested.

Ah, the token under the bus guy, how sad for him. Meanwhile in reality land, there are many such threats, but at least we can feel all safe and confident the government really cares...

What a crock. What tipped the scales in this one? Threatening the cops? That's what it looks like to me, but that's just my opinion...

The founder and leader of the Black Panthers died in the 80's. I have no reason to believe he even knew who Zimmerman was let alone put a bounty on his head. And yes the guy was arrest and tried numerous times.

Our illegitimate ruling class of thieves and traitors wants this law on the books in case people every wake up and realize what has to be done and how practical it is, since we greatly outnumber them. We could infiltrate their government's army and the rulers' personal bodyguards, so the power of their mercenaries is not a problem.

Perhaps he should not have said he was going to kill people including cops. Cops dont have a sense of humor when you threaten to kill them ;)

When are these (*)(*)(*)(*)ing idiots going to stop thinking they can post (*)(*)(*)(*) like this on social media and no one will notice?

I think that's an overcharge and people need to be more careful posting on Facebook. More than likely he was just tying to get "likes" ...
