    ((((((((((((((((((sigh)))))))))))))))))))

I wish I could feel as positive about this as you seem to. Going through the Newman purge here in Queensland it is the "same old same old" Politicians say "let there be cuts" and the bureaucrats start looking for heads to lop off so they can keep their jobs. We have lost more than 850 positions for nurses and midwives in Queensland since the State government came to power.

Though to be honest no one was "fired" they just "lost" their jobs

Oh really ? Well you have 18,000+ posts telling us about American politics !!! So much for your credibility here then .............. :clapping:

Yes and no. I honestly think it is difficult for Americans to really appreciate the Australian political landscape because we have a couple of fundamental differences

    a) we do not elect our prime minister - oh! It looks like that when all you can see in the newspapers before an election is which leader of the party said what but when we go to the polls we are voting for individual area representatives not a country leader

    b) mandatory voting. This means Australia will "swing" more than any other country because so many are turning up not because they want to vote but because they want to avoid a fine for not voting.

I would not take my lead from the posters on here. As was mentioned earlier faction fighting was the biggest issue. The Australian people saw through the cynicism of reinstating Kevin Rudd, who fell over himself to adopt some of the Liberal policies. Both parties are very centerist in outlook so the only thing that every really distinguishes them is the sense of leadership. The ALP projected a real disjointed approach and Australians reacted.

Really??? Strange - you would use an anonymous internet board mostly populated by Americans as a gauge for what is currently hot political concern in Australia??

You voted in Conservatives, knowing exactly the result it would yield. Same difference..

I fail to see the logic in your conclusion. Dunderheads vote stupidly whether mandatory or not. There is no logic path in your post.

    - - - Updated - - -

Apparently you cannot debate without the stupid ad-hom attacks.

Such posters can kiss me ass.

It could take 100 years to undo the damage done by conservative policies in America.

Why would voters have been so stupid in 2012 to put the 1% party back in power?

Strange how no one is able to name anything good that comes from conservative policies.

    Ahem...

Americans do not care about Australian politics. At all.

We still can't figure out why Australians care about American politics...

Guess the founding fathers, the federalist papers and the Constitution is too conservative for you as well.

Simple - you are bigger than us and what happens there will affect us. But do not confuse interest in global issues with interest primarily in America.

    Ok. That's fair.

So, basically, as long as you Aussies do as we say, you'll be fine. And we'll continue to ignore you.

No, it was not an issue BEFORE the election

    ((((((((((((((((((((Sigh))))))))))))))))))))

It was not an issue to the average Aussie - yeah Abbott tried to play on it in the last days (and since I was driving 1,700K I did miss that) but it was not a MAJOR issue to the people who you talked to. The average Aussie

They were far more concerned about the overall economy and even more concerned in relation to the factional fighting in the Labor party.

The liberals did not win this election

    Labor lost it

Evidently it was an issue BEFORE the election, since it was an issue in the election and one of the new PM's election promises.
