How many contradictions in your belief system before you'd leave it?

There are 475 contradictions in the Bible, and I left that belief system. My question is, "how many contradictions would there need to be in your current belief system before you'd leave it?"

Many people have never thought about that.

Five? 10? I'm thinking maybe a dozen tops, but even then I'd take the belief system less seriously if there were even THAT many.

If a witness in a jury trial gave 30 contradictions in their testimony, obviously you wouldn't trust anything they say, so why trust a book that has way more than even that? Only fear can get a person to completely disregard the requirement for consistency.

Travon Martin's fiesty lady friend only gave a handful of contradictions in her testimony, and the press was all over her. She gave way way fewer contradictions than the bible, for example. If you don't believe her, then don't believe the Bible.

    that's a good question.

For example: most everyone believes that hot goes to cold, based on the 2nd law of thermodynamics. But just to put on a jacket is breaking the law.

Everybody has laws, rules, contradictions and beliefs that are held but not full accepted or sustained.

'How many' would it take, is a good question as i personally sit here all day long pointing out many items that people do not know or had taken into consideration prior to committing to a side of a debate.

I would like to focus that methodology and see how many will actually be honest with themselves on a commitment.

As for my 'beliefs', i dont really have many any more.

I believe that each are capable.

I believe that each can create.

I know the 2LoT is a joke and to be repealed to the pirates code (as a sort of guideline).

I know that any that can walk, can walk on water.

I don't like contradictions, hence why I stopped believing when I was around twelve, and started moving towards the right after fifteen.

What if there was one big truth? And lots of different people had crazy ideas about it.

    Call it all a lie?

The way people reacted to Travons death says a lot more than what really happened. What is the big truth?

Calm down. We were not there. We do not know.

Really though the significance of anything is how you feel about it.

Please, put on your jacket and go sit outside at Vostok, or if that's too far,
go to Fairbanks in January. Sit outside until you understand that
2LOT is not so easy to outsmart. Or until frozen solid, whichever comes first.

If you have four different witnesses to a car accident, you will get four different versions of what happened, and there will be contradictions. That doesn't mean the car accident didn't happen.

To theists faith trumps reality. Atheists call that a complete lack of integrity.

If you left that 'belief system', why are you still talking about it?

and of course, if they tell different stories not all of them can be true.

    What a non-point, really.

Usually your posts are too long and strident, over the top, to where I wont look at them.

This one is short, to the point, and dead on.

Close enough, I'd phrase it differently, perhaps, but it is a lack of integrity.
Its obvious; its blatant, its not just atheists who notice it.
Any educated xtian could tell you that thinking there really was a world wide flood,
for example, involves great intellectual dishonesty.

The story of Noah and the flood is a teaching narrative... along the same theme.. redemption.

I couldn't help but notice your signature.
There may be a reason why you are the lowest information voter possible.
You believe those that don't think the way you do should remain quiet about it.
    Shockingly, Blackrook agrees!

If I have four different people claiming to know specifics about an event(never mind a whole belief system with it's own history) they never actually witnessed, and the details don't match, do I get to question whether that event or that history actually happened then? How about 40,000 or 4 million?

    40 k or 40 million WHAT?

"Flood believers", or "fluddies" get specifics from the bible.
Then they add to them, to taste; the excess water was wafted to Neptune, Hydroplate theory, etc.

People who some common sense, and / or some knowledge of geology
    know its just a story.

People sharing an opinion, as in argument ad populum.

You and I appear to be on the same side here. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Are you familiar with early Christian writings?

Here are some that have survived.

476 contradictions would be the deal breaker.

There is a point I think you failed to make clear in your OP which is to say that even if there was a truth to be found in the bible how do you find it? Everyone who lives as a Christian today believes they know a truth whatever that may be but most are ignorant of or unwilling to admit the fact that had they been born into Christianity in a different time that truth would be equally different.

As we understand more about our existance through science the bible becomes less and less literal and more and more metaphorical. Theism is becoming more deistic by the decade, well Christian theism I should say.

You succumb to the powers of suggestion too easily.

It's a self-contradictory post, I merely pointed to that fact.

You should read my patent sometime. Then you could add "legalese" to your list of objections to my writing. By the time I was done I could hardly read it myself without my eyes crossing.

You don't bother to find the means to cope with symbolic/metaphorical/allegorical meanings, and so your solution is to cop out altogether.

Christ said "Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day....He...dwelleth in me, and I in him," etc. (John 6:47-58).

The real meanings are hidden and veiled so as to thwart those who are profane and abusive of power.

The passage alludes to an enriching mental-spiritual experience. The flesh of Christ is spiritual knowledge. With the absorption of divine truth and the inspiration by interior revelation, an individual can become aware of the universal source of life. The blood that sustains the body can be compared to the outpouring that sustains the universe.

Theosophy states that a human can advance, even if it takes successive lifetimes, to the point where sufficient development of consciousness enables the brain to pick up superphysical forces.

The universe is too big and complex for it to be run entirely by one great Kahuna. Hierarchies of jurisdiction and authority must exist. Opportunity could be the purpose of life. Existence must be extendable beyond mundane earth-bound human form.

The choice is between being endlessly stuck in this worldly reality or pursuing the only other way of escaping as an advanced being.
