I watched this bizarre case on news earlier - couldn't believe it.... or I should say the Italians bizarre legal system..... First they say she's guilty, then says she's not - a few yrs later, they say she is..... stupid. When do they finally make up their mind, one way or the other?
For years now a growing number of my constituents have been of Italian decent, and I've come to know them well. They have honored me with their support and with their friendship. Indeed, I can proudly say that some of my very best friends are Italian-Americans. However, Mr. Chairman, at this time, very unfortunately, I have to leave these proceedings in order to preside over a very important committee, my own committee. But before I leave I do want to say this: that these hearings on the Mafia are in no way whatsoever a slur upon the great Italian people. Because I can state from my own knowledge and experience that Italian-Americans are among the most loyal, most law-abiding, patriotic, hard working American citizens in this land. And it would be a shame, Mr. Chairman, if we allowed a few rotten apples to give a bad name to the whole barrel. Because from the time of the great Christopher Columbus up through the time of Enrico Fermi right up until the present day, Italian-Americans have been pioneers in building and defending our great nation. They are the salt of the earth, and they're one of the backbones of this country.
Yes, it seems the Italian lust for drama and spectacle is so pervasive that their entire legal and political systems have fallen victim to it. They care more about doing something outrageous than about promoting justice. Fortunately Amanda got out of country when she had the chance. Studying abroad is supposed to help open your mind up to other cultures, but I'm guessing she's done with anything outside of the States now.
This made me laugh... but really, I don't apply the same level of drama-over-justice to Italian-Americans as I do to Italian Italians. Most Italian-Americans eventually adopt the culture of the U.S., and the ones who don't pursue careers on The Jersey Shore. - - - Updated - - - What about the story has convinced you she's guilty?
Me? i don't even know the case but since the jury think so they must be right, after all she comes from a country full of criminals (over 2m in prison etc) and it can be genetic.
It probably will not. If it should do so, the request will almost certainly be declined, since that country's mutual-extradition treaty with the US contains an exception for cases in which one country has acted in a manner contrary to the other country's laws; in this case, subjecting Amanda Knox to double jeopardy. Ms. Knox has already indicated that she will not voluntarily return to Italy. And I seriously doubt that she will visit another country that has an agreement with Interpol, either, as that could also result in her arrest and extradition to Italy.
Everybody knows that the black guy killed her...........the Italian prosecutor thought he could bag a cute American and make a name for himself.......I'm glad Amanda chose not to go back to this kangaroo court in Italy......have a nice life Amanda
I think retrial should be allowed if DNA evidence emerges proving beyond a doubt that they are guilty of a heinous crime (like murder, or pedophilia) It would have to be hard evidence though, they shouldn't just be allowed to re-try a person as many times as they want.
To bad she can't buy her way through the justice system like their perverted former prime minister Berlusconi.
I wouldn't hold out for their Supreme Court to do the right thing either since they just bypassed their own consent laws so a pedophile could get a retrial.
Then ask your Congressman or Senator to propose a Constitutional Amendment. Regardless of what you think, the way things work now is that once you're found innocent, even if you are in fact guilty, it's over. And that's a good thing. Because otherwise the Government could just charge you over and over again until they found the "right" jury. And frankly, it's better that our laws find 100 guilty people innocent than 1 innocent person guilty.
Well, maybe the Italian Appeals court will say she is innocent because they did not consider ALL the facts. Personally, I think Amanda is guilty as an accessory. The person who actually committed this atrocious murder was Amanda's ex boyfriend with Amanda becoming the accessory after she had sex with him and waited for the police to come to notice a dead body in her apartment some 8-10 hours later.
They let the men to buy their way through, but they want the decent-looking women to sleep their way through it. Their whole prosecution was based on her being some kind of sex-crazed occultist. They figure if they could trash her reputation maybe she'd give up all dignity and start servicing their twisted expectations. The whole episode contributes to the perception of a culture with sadly disparate view of men and women.
Its not prefect but it's the best. If we rid everything that's not prefect than say goodby to obamacare tax.
Right, but its funny how you criticize someone else's and then make the claim that yours isn't perfect.
Nope I sure didn't. This is the law system this country has chosen. If the people here believe in it than I have no right. It's a sovereign nation with it's own laws. You travel to a country you are at the mercy of their laws.
Well I shouldn't say you personally, but many of the comments I have read not yours. Remember when the kid was in Singapore and was going to be caned for breaking the law, how many people complained about how unjust that was. When you are in another country you have to respect the laws or suffer the consequences.
Even though I agree with you, I think the ruckus over the kid getting cained, was folks getting upset about how such a punishment would be considered cruel and unusual punishment here in the states. Just like how the first trial was pretty shoddy in the case of Amanda Knox, and the second trial reeks of double jeopardy.
