On these message boards the conservatives and neoconservatives regularly boast of their certainty that all homeless men are simply too lazy to work and are therefore the sole cause of their own homelessness.

People of reason know this is not true, and were proven correct by a study by St. Michaels Hospital.

Results of the recent study found that nearly half of homeless men had suffered at least one traumatic brain injury. Almost 90% of these injuries happened before the men became homeless. The injuries resulted in changes in personalities, the loss of ability to concentrate, and other emotional problems that caused the loss of jobs, families, friends, and their homes.

In a summary of the findings: “Almost half of all homeless men who took part in a study had suffered at least one traumatic brain injury in their life and 87 percent of those injuries occurred before the men lost their homes. While assaults were a major cause of those traumatic brain injuries, or TBIs, (60 per cent) many were caused by potentially non-violent mechanisms such as sports and recreation (44 per cent) and motor vehicle collisions and falls (42 per cent).”

This study does not include the homeless men with mental illness and other mental and physical disabilities making them unable to work.

Of course, the right-wingers will grasp at straws, any straw, in their attempts to refute the scientific results of the study and try to justify their ignorant opinions of the homeless. This is their standard reaction to facts, especially scientific facts that completely undermine their long held and misguided beliefs.

I do not recall anyone saying that absolutely every homeless man in the nation was too lazy to work. In my experience, quite a few of them--the ones that are truly homeless and outdoors as opposed to those sleeping on their uncle's sofa because their mom tossed them out-- are mentally handicapped or have major substance abuse issues.

I agree. This thread is yet another flamboyant Leftist strawman. I will say that nearly all pan handlers and sign holders are lazy. I see guys in their 20's and 30's with two hands, two legs, and a strong back holding a sign begging for money. Most of them aren't homeless, aren't veterans, or any of the other lies they scrawl on their cardboard signs. If any group could be called lazy, it would be these con artists.

I wonder how many right-wingers who are inclined to say, "Get a job, you bum!" would actually hire one of these people who they despise.

No I wouldn't because I don't hire dishonest people. But I'm also not obligated to offer a job to somebody I encourage to make his way through honest labor instead of lying and holding a sign on a street corner.

Could you please point out the threads and posts where "conservatives and neoconservatives regularly boast of their certainty that all homeless men are simply too lazy to work and are therefore the sole cause of their own homelessness?" I'm calling BS on that. Sounds like a super strawman.

Thanks. That's exactly the kind of demonization of the poor that I was talking about.

    • Some people who work in offices take 2-hour lunch breaks, spend a half hour gossiping, and the rest of the day surfing or tweeting.
    • Other people stand outside in the freezing cold while asking for money.

Somehow you see the latter as being "dishonest" and they are unworthy of being hired.

So, the obvious question is: if they're so dishonest and unworthy of being hired then are you okay with paying for their welfare?

Probably not, which begs yet another question: What kind of world do some right-wingers live in when they want to deny people work while complaining that not enough people are working?

I think you're skewing the issue. You speculated that right wingers wouldn't hire somebody they told to go get a job. I affirmed that because if I know they're pan handlers I know something about their character. But that doesn't mean I don't want them to get a job, and when they look for work, they're not going to staple "pan handler" to their resume. And you put dishonest in quotes like you think they're telling the truth, this in spite of investigative reports that show these people going to their homes after pan handling and having some of the finer things in life. You make these people out to be victims but it only shows your gullibility. I personally hope you empty your wallet every time you see these people. Less money to donate to Left wing causes.

"Traumatic brain injury" due to "assaults" (fighting over booze and drugs or trying to get money for booze and drugs, dealing drugs, being caught committing crime, being injured in prison after committing crime, etc.), "recreational activities" (doing booze and drugs), "automobile and other accidents" (getting hit in the street or beat up while high on booze and drugs, running from police). Yeah, sure all these homeless were just like the rest of us, and then got an injury as All American captain of the HS football team or rescuing the neighbor's cat out of a tree, heroically pulling people out of a burning building. Hmm. Who buys crap like this that is directly counter to our life experience as reasonable citizens with open eyes? Where does it issue from? Who crafts it? I'll attempt an answer.

The left in all its raw outcome statistics on social problems and income/wealth disparity utterly ignores the harsh impact of bad individual choices and repetitive bad behavior on the lower quintiles, ignores that govt theft from the productive can't change this aspect of human choice one iota, only exacerbate it by enabling it. I think even school children are capable of grasping this basic principle, that rewarding poor choice is counterproductive. "Should daddy keep funding your big brother's meth addiction by giving him money?" Who doesn't -get- that?

So why does the adult left go on and on with this illusion of the beatific and blameless nature of the bottom quintiles that I don't think even they really believe? The left wants to 1. enable more and more bad choices to solidify a dependent voting bloc, 2. allow bloated salaried-pensioned union workers, do-nothing overpaid bureaucrats, spoiled, resentful academics at all levels. and all the other dishonest beneficiaries we see cropping up and carping on the net in places like this, who seek $$, self-promotion and theft under the very obvious window dressing of "helping the poor," to do what they do best, convince a government of the low information people to steal more from the rest of us by circulating dishonest propaganda.

The counterproductive results of mass government aid programs that stare us all in the face daily are never dealt with, only ignored, and I think the greedy, self-interested reasons for this are plain, "I want more pay from my union job, 80k doesn't cut it," "I want more pay for my easy teaching job, 60k doesn't cut it," "I want to get my cousin an easy, do nothing govt job, and we have to grow for that to happen," "I make 300k a year from govt contracts and the more govt funding and higher taxes, the more money I make."

Seriously, no one claimed or claims that there aren't legitimate safety net cases. They are certainly not a majority or even a large % of govt dependence cases though.

Still waiting for the evidence that "conservatives think all homeless are lazy."

And on that note, the evidence that conservatives think "all working are honest."

A more honest thread title might be "TBIs Cause Homelessness".

That wouldn't exactly be true either as there are many who have had TBIs yet are not homeless.

I have personally been in 2 serious car wrecks where my head smashed the windshield. I grew up playing tackle football with no helmets or pads and once fell 20 feet out of a tree. Somehow I'm not homeless and can even manage a coherent thought once in a while.

This thread is junk, just as the cited 'study' is.

This is totally a strawman argument and represents an argument against a hostile caricature of the right that the left has created.

Where do people "regularly" say this? "Regularly" is quite an accusation and you have provided no substantiation for this here. It's widely known that many homeless are untreated mentally ill. Part of that problem is that symptoms of mental illness can include refusal to be treated with medications. We do not have the right to force them to get medicated unless a judge rules them a public danger. Rather than addressing such things, it's far more convenient to invoke an old liberal canard as a means of taking swipes at conservatives on the pretext that you care about the homeless.....

Without actually lifting your finger to do a single thing about homelessness.

    - - - Updated - - -

This thread isn't about homelessness. It's about political opportunism and spite.

I've been posting on this forum since 2008 and I've never see what you claim, please post an example. They HAVE said people on welfare are simply too lazy to work. But that doesn't mean they're homeless.

Of course, that is also one stellar reason to further support and bolster the social safety-nets in this society.

The Conservatives and their radical and uncompassionate reasoning, are ruining this nation. They need to be put in-check politically.

one in five homeless males is a veteran.

I can see why right wingers wouldn't hire THEM!

Righties care about life right up until the baby's born, then.... not so much.

Righties care about our troops as long as they are over there somewhere doing the killing and dying on their behalf.... when they come home.... not so much.

You have to love the persistence of the loony left. A Conservative might post that some, or even many, of the homeless are homeless by choice. And suddenly, every Conservative believes that every homeless person is homeless by choice. It is as if nothing in the loony left's fantasy world can except as an absolute. Your post is a perfect example of that fact.

The study showed that 111 homeless men were recruited from a homeless shelter in Toronto ages 27 to 81. You will notice that no one under the age of 27, and no women were included in the study. Further, the study was not repeated in other geographic areas to see if the results are repeated or an anomaly. The study showed that 45% of these 111 (or 50) men suffered from Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). The study did not say why the remaining 65% (or 61) men were homeless. It also does not state the number of men that were not recruited, or why.

So, what do we have? We have a study that represents an unknown percentage of men at one homeless shelter. The results of the study supports what the majority believes. While there are some that may be homeless due to TBI's, many are homeless because they choose to be. What we should be doing is identifying those that the ability and means to work, and reserve the limited resources for those that need it the most. It is a simple concept. Those that can work should, and help those that can't.

Btw, I am curious why you chose to include an outright lie. "This study does not include the homeless men with mental illness and other mental and physical disabilities making them unable to work." There is no statement included in the article that makes that claim. Further, since a TBI would constitute a "mental illness and other mental and physical disabilities". Thus if everyone that met this criteria were excluded, there would have been no one to study. I realize honesty is not a factor in the loony left agenda, but this statement was just idiotic.

Why do you on the Left have to make things up about conservatives, as evidenced by this thread and this monstrously stupid and erroneous post of yours? Is it that you can't find anything to criticize about real conservatives so you make one up in your mind to attack?
