I don't think the country was ever really united to begin with. It's been a constant struggle for power ever since the beginning. Trying to unite people who are so drastically different is doomed to failure. The best they can hope for is that another Civil War won't eventually break out.

It's childish behavior, something that is frighteningly common and popular among American adults these days, especially online. To me, this is spelling the end of even the illusion of democratic rule. These people aren't fit to have any say in how a nation is governed, and there's no way a politician is going to have any but the most superficial, fake respect for such people and their opinions.
