Call me overly materialistic, but I just don't see what the ethnic Tibetans hope to gain with independence or even political autonomy.

The central government invests heavily in the region. The economic welfare of a large percentage of the urban population of Lhasa is almost wholly dependent on Chinese government investment.

I realize that their faith is quite important for some Tibetans, but faith doesn't feed people.

The religion tends to incorporate animism and so China is destroying the religion of Tibet with its industrialisation and transformation into a modern Chinese civilization because the landscape is seen purely as a resource or blank canvas. Tibetan's would prefer to have control over how this process happens so they can respect their religion, which to Tibetan's is integral to social life and its government (before China invaded).

That's all well and good but it doesn't feed the kids or pay the electricity bills.
An independent Tibet cutoff from Chinese support would be no different than Nepal or Bhutan. Not exactly an upgrade in standard of living.

They don't want to be cut off from China, they are even happy to remain part of China but an autonomous region, they just want to get control back of their country so they do not loose their culture, heritage and religion.

Well, of course that would be the ideal for them. The question then is what does China get out of that? And why would China go along with it? Everything comes with a price.

I am really not sure, if this is their true thoughts, have you been in Tibet? have you talked with some native people there?

what china regime do in Tibet, is colonialism.

to kill a nation, you have to kill its culture, heritage and religion. that's what it done to Tibet, and that's what it is doing to Hong Kong.

Why? when people forget who they are, they have no ground to own their land, their resources, it's all belong to government. you are just a living creature, you can just obey to government. the Chinese went there to run business since late 70s, which was a systematic and large amount immigration, and now all native Tibet people work for them.

The native Tibet people become a slavery class at Tibet....

Communists have no ground to rule Tibet since day 1.

It's hilarious you make this little cute rant about the evils of colonialism while in another thread you celebrate the inception of Hong Kong as a colony.

So I guess it's only a good thing when white people do it?
Are you really that ashamed to be Chinese?

The Dalai Lama is very well-received in the US as he frequently visits America to promote the cause of Tibetan independence. The CIA has been funding Tibetan independence groups since the 1950s and it's quite possible that the Dalai Lama has been on the CIA's payroll for decades. China is a multi-ethnic state including Turkish minorities and other tribal groups and China's occupation of Tibet is similar to the state of Puerto Rico, which is still a United States territory despite the existence of the independence movement.

China government does not respect us all that's why
and the mainland immigrants it send to HK, don't respect local people

Britain didn't put much effort to kill our culture, our history, our language, our identity, and China government does the opposite way.

the last question is the question to ask yourself, instead of me, as I am a Hong Kongers, my ethnicity is Han, but I am not Chinese

Why people all over the world, from Europe to Africa, have such a bad impression towards Chinese no matter wealthy or poor?

What makes you think anyone should respect you?
Honestly, have you seen yourselves? Cantonese aren't known to be the most... physically robust... shall we say of the Chinese.

In WWI, the British rejected an offer from the Republican Chinese government to send cantonese laborers to the Western Front. Instead, both the British and French opted to pay for volunteers from Shandong, where people are normal sized with actual muscles.

Do you somehow think just by being the colonial subjects of a foreign power, the Chinese government has an obligation to "respect" you?
I'd say "get off your high horse", but we all know that most cantonese aren't quite tall enough to get on a high horse to begin with.

People don't have bad impressions of the Chinese People.

People have issues with the Chinese Communist Party Leadership which does not allow the Chinese People to VOTE thus allow the Chinese People to select what system of Government they want for China and allow the Chinese People to VOTE IN THEIR OWN LEADERS!!!

Realistically Hong Kong didn't exist until after it was ceded to Britain because it was set of islands which encompassed a few fishing hamlets. By the time the Taiping rebellion occurred the Chinese population of HK exploded because many were refugees. The government also continued to let people in during the Mao years as well.

Hong Kong has enjoyed a separate culture, government and liberties which the mainland has not.
China is seeking to completely incorporate it into the PRC.
The PRC has also exercised a disregard for the rights and culture of people within their borders such as those in Kashgar.
It's not so much colonialism as it is another quiet genocide.

can't agree more! and yes, colonialism can't describe what's HK is suffering, precisely it's a systematic bloodless genocide.

"Hongkongers suffer from the repercussions caused by ‪#‎Hongkong‬'s uncontrollable influx of immigrants perhaps isn't caused by the gov's incompetence, but a systematic bloodless genocide"

    https://therealnewshk.wordpress.com/2015/01/28/loyal-to-the-invaders-resist-the-locals/

Hong Kongers has been living in a lie through these years, thinking that communist china will keep on her promise, based on Joint declaration, based on Basic Law, that she will give us democracy, meaning that we can choose our own leader, own government.

The governments, either China or Hong Kong, claim that it needs wait to a suitable time, suitable situation, as we can't decide it alone, we have to cooperate with China, like it or not China takes part in it.

we have to let China puts down her worries, so to some circumstances we have to yield. and see? China is improving, so she will become more open-minded and will keep her promise.

in fact, the suitable time for them is the time when genocide is done, when the local Hong Kongers vanished. of course they will never tell.

one can never beg for freedom from a dictator, this is just a simple logic, yet the traditional HK democratic politicians has been selling this dream for 30 years, meanwhile they are helping the genocide, they only care their vote, they know they can still have a space in a fake democracy system, a role of opposite party is always needed.

currently, some of them are trying to manipulate people again to accept the proposal of the fake election method.

and for these years, we never understand China communist party, which is no more than a rouge, who always ready to break his every promise once he has made it. Using the nationalism, and a fake promise, to stop Hong Kongers to even think about the possibility of independence.

we are like living in small village with heavy fog and doing some meaningless things for years and don't notice that we have besieged by beasts already, they get closer and closer and ready to prey on us.

The voice of independence is rising, yet the communist's lackeys is yelling that Article 23 and national security law (in communist style) will be enacted in Hong Kong. When that day comes, a war must begin.

and some Hong Kongers are drawing support (funding and message spread) from Hong Kong overseas students and immigrants, to connect them and promote the idea of independence and nation building.

However, no matter how it comes finally, right now the tide is unstoppable, and it will become a billow. People need hope to survive under suppression and slavery, and this is the new hope of the awaken Hong Kongers.

PS. my small picture is a flag which decided for Hong Kong nation building. it's based on the emblem of HK colony government. the small lion is replaced by fire phoenix. The fire phoenix means the rebirth of Hong Kongers. Phoenix rebirths in fire.

Avian Influenza killed 51 Hong Kongers already, just within a month! and over hundreds people are still in ICU. and yet Hong Kong communist govt doesn't speak a word for that, and there's very little noise within public, as if nothing happen....

see? you present the thinking of mainland Chinese perfectly...

A government OF COURSE have the OBLIGATION to respect her own people.
government OF THE PEOPLE, BY THE PEOPLE, FOR THE PEOPLE.

The weak don't deserve to be respected by the strong.
The poor don't deserve to be respected by the rich.
SO I CAN BREAK EVERY PROMISE
    AND TO OFFEND EVERY LAW,
    WHEN IT IS BENEFIT ME,
AND I AM CAPABLE TO DO SO.

if I can take advantages from you
    that means you are weak
    that means you are stupid
it's not my fault, and you deserve it just for your weaknesses.
I can bully anyone IF I AM POWERFUL ENOUGH.

THIS IS THE LOGIC OF COMMUNIST CHINA.

lets to remind you, how much donation of Hong Kongers has been made all these years each time when China has disaster? Have you think about how much food and Commodities of Hong Kongers brought to China when Chinese were suffered from famine because of the cruel political movement and wrong economic policies?

shameless and ungrateful, that's the nature of current mainland Chinese.

I KNOW you will use the US as an example to argue but no thanks,
COMMUNIST ARE JUST EVIL BY DEFAULT.

but you can never understand as you are ruled by it for your whole life.

The Tibetan people don't have much of a future politically or culturally. They will be completely Sinicized.

Perhaps completely Sinicized is better than completely forgotten, as compared with the Red Indians of the New World.

P.S. Nephew Albert, didn't hear from you for quite some time. Just accomplished your secret mission in IS?

Both cultures will be forgotten. That's a form of death. The Indians now own and operate casinos. Perhaps the Tibetans could be awarded gaming licenses. Lhasa could become a new Macao.

Excellent idea! The Potala Palace should become the new casino in China, and Dalai should be permitted to return to keep record of the daily earnings.

If I were mean I would say that your post could apply to all Chinese generally. However, I'm not mean.

Imo the Cantonese are the smartest, and most industrious and enterprising of the Han Chinese.
