If this forum is any indication, maybe not as much as you think.

Although there definitely has been some change, seeing as how right wing racists only spout the racist drivel they do in complete anonymity. They know that in real world, people aren't going to stand for their racist excrement, so the anonymity of the internet is all they have. I'd call that "progress", because 40-50 years ago they would be proudly saying their racist views out in the open.

Was anything else going on in the 1960s?

Nearly all of the racists on this board are clearly liberals.

Please explain why the "Racist Democrats" became "Racist Republicans" as evident in the electoral college maps I posted above. Other than the answer I gave you.

Dems can crossover vote in those States. Look at 68 where those racist Dems were still dems but voted for the Independent party of George Wallace.

Well, you are only looking at Presidential campaigns for color so it has been all over the place, most of the country is red, does that mean most of the country is racist? I does for simplistic minds.

I certainly don't think that racism prevails throughout every red state.... or any blue state, for that matter. I think it is simplistic to suggest that racism does not inform and influence the votes of many people in the south. But you believe whatever helps you sleep at night. I sleep the sleep of the righteous, no matter what.

A few things come to mind. First, the Republicans, as a whole have never been racist. Second, you have simplified the election to a single issue, racism. Didn't we have a few other issues at the time? It seems we had an arms race with the Russians, a race to the moon as well, then this small conflict that was growing in a far away land called Vietnam.

Can you point me to the books that establish that magically all non racist democrats stayed in the party while all racist democrats became Republicans? You have a map and a narrative. Do you have any facts beyond two electoral college results?

What did things look like county by county?

No. I will leave that to someone who has a real interest in your myths. I have other things that interest me more than this. If your myth means this much to you perhaps you should gather a few facts beyond the results of two presidential elections.

I actually don't think that democrats OR republicans - as a whole - are racist or have ever been racist. I think there ARE lots of racists in the south, however. I have kinfolk who live there ( Georgia ) and report to me that racism is a fact of life there. In the first fifty or sixty years of the 20th century, the northern democrats had an increasingly uncomfortable relationship with their southern (racist) party members. I would imagine that, today, northern republicans have that same sort of intra-party relationship problem. We lived with it until we couldn't anymore. I imagine that the republicans will live with it until they can't anymore as well.

I don't think that the self righteous sleep as well as I do.

For those with any interest in individual liberty and individual freed states rights are an essential counterweight to the what has become the all-consuming national government. With the direct election of senators the states lost the only power they had. This was the beginning of the end of the nation. We can restore the State's role by amending the Constitution to return the control of the states' senators to the state legislatures.

You claim to support the Constitution but you disparage one of the few recent presidents who actually supported it. Sadly, this no longer surprises me.

I suppose the liberal ones did. Senator Byrd, no doubt voted for Obama. I think he did it for the Marxism angle though.

I don't disparage Reagan's support for the constitution. I applaud him for it. I do, however, disparage his pandering to southern racists for votes in the 1980 election.

Philadelphia, Mississippi for his very first campaign stop? Why not Philadelphia, Pennsylvania instead? We both know why.

Byrd had long since abandoned his ties to the KKK. Next.

I am beginning to believe that you are a racist. Not a big deal really. Given that these days everyone except actual racists are labeled thusly it just isn't a big deal.

I am beginning to believe you are delusional. Nothing I have ever said or written would suggest I am racist in any way.

    Nope. I read his autobiography.

    States rights- dog whistle....right.
I am certain every item was fact checked. Not that it matters. Democrat presidents and senators were members of the KKK.

I cannot recall any Republican presidents or senators who were members of the KKK.

You enjoy your myths. It is really not important enough to research any further.

who cares? this is 2014. what happened 50-60-70 years ago is HISTORY, not current events. Is the KKK as strong as it once was? of course not. Is it affiliated with the democratic party like it once was? of course not. Is it affiliated with the republican party? I sincerely doubt it. Does the republican party tell racist white voters in the south to vote for the OTHER party? of course they don't. And they don't.

and when someone mentions "state's rights" to me, it is not a dog whistle that gets me excited to hear what else they have to say, it makes me wanna puke, because I KNOW it is a dog whistle that animates others.
