In relation to Abovealpha's post the real test of the F-35 is not older 4th generation & 3rd generation aircraft that "should" retire long before the F-35 but other 5th generation aircraft when they have entered service or 4.5++ generation aircraft in combination with multiple force multipliers as would be the case currently if NATO were to invade Russia.

 

The probability of NATO invading Russia is nearly zero......… the probability of NATO backing up the Ukraine is possible though!

His design paradigm's are all wrong. Air combat these days is a much more wider weapons systems game. The donkey's all miss the point that the F35 'has' to be multirole and survivable to fill a gap in an emerging capability gap more then the existing one - its not so much about replacing the F16, FA18, AV8, A10's capabilities but supporting systems as they come online which will do that. Unmanned platforms and systems will do more of filling that gap then anything else, and the F35 becomes about putting a pilot forward in the loop in ISTAR while being able to survive and fight. As these systems roll out the F22 and F35 can work within the normal paradigm this fossil is referring. It's part of the design concept about using one basic airframe to save costs in 'many' areas. People choose to ignore the wider realities because they live in fairy land and peddle poop to sound important.... but just end up sounding ignorant.

That electronic attack by the SU24 (I think it was a Fencer?) should be considered an act of war.... so if jet's want to go around attacking a single ship in peacetime - then its no surprise they are going to have the upper hand in regards to surprise.
