Plenty of European nations got multiple official languages. The only thing it really does, is demanding in what languages it's own government communicates with it's own people as a minimum requirement. I wouldn't know why the US would exclude Spanish from that list. It's not as if adding Spanish as an official language means that all schools must teach Spanish. That's a totally separate issue.

That's akin to saying native american languages arent native because native americans came from somewhere else originally

Actually it's not because the Native-American languages developed in America. Additionally for much of America specifically in the Southwest and Pacific coast Spanish was the dominate language when many of these states were admitted to the Union.

What Senator Inhofe's proposal really reflects is a thinly veiled call for White Nationalism in the United States that's just a continuation the historic WASP racism in America. More racism from a Republican? Gee, what a surprise.

This is why the further left you go, the harder it is to take you guys seriously. That plus...everything is racist.

English as the official language is the equivalent of white nationalism? The absurdity speaks for itself.

The origin of the English language is England that is the "Land of the Whte Anglo-Saxons Protestants" used in the acronym WASP that is the foundation for the White Nationalism-Supremacy movement in America. You may choose to ignore the obvious connection to White Nationalism-Supremacy while I do not. When we look at the foremost groups advocating this proposal all of the white supremacy hate groups appear at the head of the list. The White Nationalism-Supremacy hate groups have been advocating "English as the Official Language" for decades.

The historical "European" language of Florida, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California is Spanish, not English, and even if we just choose to respect for the European origins of the United States Spanish is just as important as English in America. The Portuguese first settled America in 1634 well over a century before the United States was founded. As Americans, not WASP's, we must address the fact that the United States has always been linguistically diversified nation that also include the Native-Americans, Chinese, Japanese, Irish, and many others then even the throught that we should limit the "Official National Language" to just English, disparaging all others, is repulsive to the non-racist.

So English is specifically linked to White Nationalism in your mind because of the acronym "WASP?" WASPs are nothing but a very tiny minority in the US, so if all of the White Nationalists were WASP's, then you might have a connection, if not a point.

But the other European language you speak of, is not linked to racism, in spite of it's European (bleech!) origins? In any case, it's totally false to say that Spanish is just as important as English in the United States. It's almost as if you guys are not even trying anymore. Your argument invariably breaks down to, "I say it's racist, so it is."

I have to agree with you. Mexico has one of the most corrupt governments in the world...even more corrupt than the US government, if that's possible.

In point of fact racism is extensive in Europe and not limited to WASP's but the proposition to "make English the official language" is unquestionably racist as it disparages other languages, predominately Spanish speaking people, and is completely unnecessary in the US.

All laws, for example, are created in English in the United States and reasonable accomodation is made for those that don't speak English. Under the proposal reasonable accomodations are not longer required by statute so we could literally prosecute a Spanish speaking person in "English" and they wouldn't have a clue about was going on because they might not speak or read the "official language" of the United States. Contracts would be required in English only even if the parties to the contract did not speak English.

We don't need the law and there is no logical reason for it except to disparage and deny equality to those that don't speak English.

This bill is absurd, what dialect of English? Are we talking the Queen's English? Southern English, New England, English...?

Dialects can be usefully defined as "sub-forms of languages which are, in general, mutually comprehensible".[1] British linguists distinguish dialect from accent, which refers only to pronunciation. Thus, any educated English speaker can use the vocabulary and grammar of Standard English. However, different speakers use their own local words for everyday objects or actions, regional accent, or Received Pronunciation, which within the U.K. is considered an accent distinguished by class rather than by region. American linguists, however, include pronunciation differences as part of the definition of regional or social dialects. The combination of differences in pronunciation and use of local words may make some English dialects almost unintelligible to speakers from other regions. The major native dialects of English are often divided by linguists into the three general categories of the British Isles dialects, those of North America and those of Australasia.[2]

Are we all supposed to use the word Y'all? Or "Yutes"?

What about African American Dialects of English?

I mean the language of the bill is simply too vague to be legal.

This is what I meant by you guys are not even trying anymore. It's simply all racism all the time.

You start off by stating that the proposition to "make English the official language" is unquestionably racist, but your defense of that proposition are issues that have nothing to do with racism. All of the points you made are arguable propositions against an English only law, but have nothing to do with racism.

I can't really imagine how your post sounds to you, so filled with moral preening. But to me, it sounds like an irrational, indefensible mishmash of racism being whatever you declare it is, no matter how little it has to do with race.

Has nothing to do with the topic, but I read your quote "In the End, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends."

Could not be more correct!! Especially in today's time watching isis do what they are doing while hussein and the rest of the world sit idly by..

Simply put - just English my friend, just English..and it's not absurd..We have people coming to this Country illegally that do not want to assimilate, want to drag their culture in and have us adapt to them, while protesting against our country and while they broke the law in the first place coming here without permission. Our Country is our Country and if they don't like it, please stay where you are. We have to use tax dollars to have non-English speaking teachers teach them, because they won't learn English, they want our signage in multiple languages, via the tax payer dollars, beacause we alow them to NOT learn OUR language of which they are here illegally in the first place, on and on....I can't imagine how other Country's from which they come, would bend over backwards to make us happy if we too, we to brake into their Country and expect them to surrender their laws to accommodate us. That is absurd and you know it. Can you imagine going to any muslim Country and expect women to actually have rights? Can you imagine going to Mexico and demand that they learn English, educate us on their dime, give us their tax payer dollars via social services, get free hospitalization via the ER, stand in line and receive food stamps via their tax payer dollars, AND THEN, allow us to protest that somehow we are being mistreated, not to mention that we are there illegally in the first place?
Absolutely pure lunacy, and only lunacy that the left try and appease. Total BS..

I think the better way to handle this is to file a lawsuit against employer that hires only Spanish speaking people.

Pax Aeon is right, that bill would kill the career of any lawmaker who touched it. Spanish is the native language of 40 million people in the United States. Making it an official language with English means only two things will take place.

    1. Government documents will be written in both English and Spanish (and what does that take, a couple hundred new government positions?)
    2. Ease of access for Spanish speakers when interacting with the government

In fact, making Spanish and English an official language would create over a thousand new government jobs and would help anyone in congress achieve reelection. Hopefully it would even create more transparency between citizens and the government.

Ah, I get it, you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about, and are simply repeating things you have heard on right wing media.

So, what about people from Puerto Rico that come here? What about people that speak Creole?

Sounds like a good move to ensure we don't become spanish speaking. It's fair enough; a cultural thing that needs to be protected. It will still be lost to Spanish in any case, but at least on paper it will be historically noted.

Would it make life easier for these who chose not to learn English, for then they'd be able to more easily get by with just Spanish? And why do I consider myself lucky that, upon my immigration into US many a decade ago I was not able to get by knowing just my native language and was thus forced to expeditiously learn English?

Will you do these Spanish speakers any favor if you remove another obstacle in their quest NOT to learn English?

If you seriously do not know what I am talking about, then you have no clue about the topic and what all involved regarding this matter. In fact, admit that you are completely ignorant about a borderless society. Next time, please bring crayons so we will know to pass on your posts.

No, what it means is to stop breaking the ^%ck into our Country and stay the #@ck in your own. If we wanted to look like the cesspool that Mexico is, we would break into your Country. Come the right way, obey the laws and S..T..F..U!!

Ah, lack of reading comprehension skills. Completely ignoring the points I brought up, to lamely toss forth a juvenile insult. Bravo my good man, you have what it takes to be a pundit on FOX News.

I'll ask again, what if someone from Puerto Rico were to come here? What about those along the gulf coast that speak Creole?
