They're even more unhappy after america pulled out of the nuclear treaty and then put missile shields on Russia's doorsteps.

It is stubby & chubby because the marines required a STOVL aircraft & the MOD wanted parts commonality to keep costs down. Without that length restriction requirement the navy & air force planes could have been made longer & either thiner or flatter than the F35 with two engines instead of one huge one to reduce the heat signature of the aircraft & carry more weapons inside or fuel inside with much better range & speed due to lower wing loading & less drag.

The rather long article in the link below details the history of the Marines requirement for a supersonic STOVL stealth aircraft, the reasons for a joint strike fighter & why that was bad for the navy & air force.

That was G.W. Bush doing. Unlike the panywaist that sitting in the White House today who removed that "missile shield" with nothing in return from Russia, Bush knew how to deal with a bully. (Putin)

Every thing points to Dick Cheney, he still had one foot in the Cold War and looks at Putin as KGB.

Anyways Bush walked away with the missile shield being deployed and Putin said, that guys has balls, I have to respect that.

2009, "change you can believe in" is now in the White House. Obama meets with Putin. Putin tells Obama get those missiles away from Russia's border. Putin waits to see what Obama wants for in exchange. (That's how the geopolitical game is played) Obama says no problem and doesn't ask for anything in exchange.

Putin wonders if he's dreaming and that Obama is just a black Neville Chamberlain in the dream ? Putin pinches himself, not a dream. Putin realises that he's dealing with an idiot, a pantywaist, someone who doesn't have a pair between his legs. Someone who's playing checkers instead of chess. From that day on, Putin would no longer have any respect for Obama. Most of the world leaders also observed this. Obama is playing checkers while the rest of the world leaders are playing chess on the geopolitical chessboard.

Russia is an export nation, not an import nation. They have the natural resources for all their industries, including the defense industry, and now they also producing their own food as well as other products. They do not have to pay outside prices for these goods. They are paid for in rubles, therefore the costs are very low. ..especially for food. So I don't know what you're talking about.

From what I have read, the super markets are packed with products, but they are Russian products, not imported products...since EU products have been embargoed by Moscow. They would also be expensive because of the low value of the ruble, this is why nations who want to build up their economy, always drop the value of their currency. They want money entering their country, not leaving it. Had Greece and the other debtor nations in the EU been able to do that, they wouldn't be debtor nations today, and would have had a stable economy.

Apacherat, here are a few excerpts that should interest you from George Friedman founder and Chairman of Stratfor, which many know as the private/shadow CIA. This speech blatantly presents the neo con perspective that dictates Washington's foreign policy, and it came after another one where he said that the overthrow of Yanukovych was the most blatant coup in history. He says that the policy of the US has always been to keep Russia and Germany apart.

He is being honest and straight forward, and isn't coloring everything with nonsense such as 'spreading democracy and freedom', or promoting human rights. Neither is he spewing out gibberish about bad Russia and Putin the bloodthirsty invader and dictator. Seems he is one of the few honest spokesmen of the Empire.

•US is the only ally Ukraine (the Kiev regime) has.

•General Ben Hodges, Chief of US army in Europe, not only officially announced that the US would train Ukrainian troops, but also awarded medals to foreign, in this case, Ukrainian soldiers which is against the US army protocol. He's showing that the Ukrainian Army is "our" army.

•US is positioning troops, armaments, artillery and other equipment in the Baltic, Poland, Romania and Bulgaria.

•The US will deliver weapons to Ukraine.

•In all of this the US acted in the context outside NATO because any NATO members state can veto any action.

•US is preparing a "Cordon Sanitaire" around Russia. Russia knows it and believes the US wants to break the Russian Federation.

•The United States controls all the oceans of the world and because of that we get to invade people and they don't get to invade us. Maintaining control of the sea and space is the foundation of American power.

•The best US policy is "divide et impera", what Reagan did with Iran and Iraq - fund both sides so they will fight each other and not fight us. It is cynical and not moral, but it works.

•The US can not constantly intervene in Eurasia; it must selectively intervene.

•The US has staged a series of colored revolutions throughout the Russian periphery. It was the US statement of intent to destroy Russia.

•The purpose of "the invasion of Georgia" was to show how much an American guarantee is worth and it is message to the Ukrainians: Do you want to be American ally? So did the Georgians... Enjoy...

•The question for the Russians will be whether they'll be able to retain a buffer zone that is at least neutral in Ukraine or will the West penetrate so far in Ukraine as to be 500 kilometers from Moscow.

•For Russia the status of the Ukraine is an existential threat.

•It is not an accident that the US "final solution" is to create an "Intermarium" ("Between-seas") area from the Black Sea to the Baltic Sea.

•Germany is in very peculiar position and they have a very complex relationship with Russians.

•The Germans themselves don't know what to do and haven't made up their mind.

•For the US, the primordial fear is German capital and technology and Russian natural resources and manpower. This combination for centuries has scared the United States.

•Whoever can tell me what the Germans will do will tell me the next 20 years of the history.

•The main problem of Germany is that it is enormously economically powerful and geopolitically very fragile and doesn't know how to reconcile two.

•"The German Question" is coming up again. That's the next question we need to address, and we don't know how to address it, we don't know what they're going to do.

Sure.....if I was the co-designer of the F-16 made my GENERAL DYNAMICS....which of course is NOT the maker of the F-35.....I would be calling the F-35 the worse idea since Stalin signed a Non-Agression Pact with Hitler!!

    LOL!!!!

A SINGLE F-35 IS CAPABLE OF SHOOTING DOWN 8 OF THE MOST UPDATED F-16'S EXISTING AND POSSIBLY AS MANY AS 12!!!!

The F-35 is a 5th Generation Fighter/Attack Stealth Aircraft that will be available in STOL and VTOL for the U.S. Marines.

The F-22 Raptor proved itself to be UNDEFEATABLE when a brace...ie....two....F-22's operating IN FULL STEALTH MODE....when flying MOCK AIR BATTLES IN ALASKA RED FLAG.....well the F-22's would continue to shoot down as many Eurofighter Typhoons that were sent up against the brace of F-22's....at one time 12 Typhoons vs. two F-22's.....and all 12 Typhoons were shot down before they barely even knew they were being targeted.

The F-35 has even better avionics and better INTEGRATED SERVICE AND INTEGRATED NATO AND AUSSIE FIRE CONTROL SYSTEMS with along with modified B-1B Bombers fitted with HUNDREDS UPON HUNDREDS OF NEW HIGHLY ADVANCED AND LONG RANGE U.S. AIR TO AIR MISSILES......8 to 12 Aussie F-35's and their Highly Advanced Avionics and Fire Control Systems can shoot down about 300 incoming TOP OF THE LINE CHINESE AIRCRAFT!!

Does the F - 35 still suffocate pilots? :hmm:
Can it manage hard weather or is it another "Swiss Watch", regarding moisture, dust,.

Do we really need a pilot for the functions assigned to the F - 35 ?
    Why not a drone.

I grant you I would want a pilot in the A - 10 Warthog if it were "my" ground being supported.

    Take it away AboveA :salute:

    Prove it?

    I WAS THERE!!!

I was there as far back as the 1980's right after the near disaster when Soviet Leader Yuri Andropov a dying and delusional man thought that the NATO MILITARY EXERCISE....ABLE ARCHER 83....WAS REAL!!!

I was there after that near complete NUCLEAR DISASTER helping to develop a system of BACK CHANNEL COMMUNICATION with members of the GRU and KGB.

I was there right before and right after the fall of the Soviet Union.

I was IN MOSCOW when those DRUNKEN IDIOTS who went on WORDWIDE TV.....DRUNK OFF THEIR A$$E$......which was the Aug. 1991 Coup.

In contrast to the reformers' moderate approach to the new treaty, the hard-line apparatchiks, still strong within the CPSU and military establishment, were completely opposed to anything which might lead to the break-up of the Soviet Union. On the eve of the treaty's signing, hardliners in the Soviet leadership, calling themselves the 'State Committee on the State of Emergency', launched the August coup in 1991 in an attempt to remove Gorbachev from power and prevent the signing of the new union treaty. Under the pretense that Gorbachev was ill, his vice president, Yanayev, took over as president. Gorbachev spent three days (19, 20, and 21 August) under house arrest at his dacha in the Crimea before being freed and restored to power. However, upon his return, Gorbachev found that neither union nor Russian power structures heeded his commands as support had swung over to Yeltsin, whose defiance had led to the coup's collapse.

I was in the NEW DEMOCRATIC RUSSIA toasting the HEALTH, WEALTH AND LONG LIFE OF THE NEW RUSSIAN DEMOCRACY!!!

I went back to the U.S. and did other JOBS.....and did not return to Russia or the Former Russian States such as Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Moldova, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia......until I went to provide SECURITY to U.S. NUCLEAR, CHEMICAL AND BIOLOGICAL WEAPONS DESTRUCTION TEAMS!

We worked very well with members of the Russian Military and all other Nations Military.

We had a few issues towards the end as we along with members of Spetsnaz had to prevent an assault upon a just discovered and completely forgotten about OLD SOVIET BIOWEAPONS LAB.

Terrorist Entities attempted to obtain Old Soviet Biological Weapons....and we with help...killed them all.

I have many Russian Friends...many who were my Cold War Counterparts and I have a great deal of respect for them....and I have been fortunate enough to now be able to call them friends.

But they see what Putin is doing...and they HATE HIM FOR IT!!!

The BEST SOUND I EVER HEARD WAS THE Bbrrrrrrrrrrruuuuup....of that Gattling Gun overhead....because I KNEW....anything it was pointed at was now very DEAD!!!

However....the F-22 and F-35 will be the very LAST PILOTED MILITARY AIRCRAFT MADE BY THE UNITED STATES.

Come on Alpha, what is Putin doing that's upsetting them... or rather what was Putin doing that made them hate him? Was it because he died on Friday, and resurrected on Saturday to help with the birth of his son? Or was it because ...

And just to let you and every member here KNOW.....the ONLY THING that Putin is more frightened of than THE ON COMING EVENTUAL U.S. PERSONAL RETRIBUTION......is what PUTIN FEARS HIS OWN INNER 110 WEALTHY SUPPORTERS WILL DO TO HIM!!!!

As you WELL KNOW....and I have posted this again and again.....the DEAL WAS......we...the U.S......purchase and PROPERLY AND ENVIRONMENTALLY SAFELY DESTROY ALL OLD SOVIET NUCLEAR, CHEMICAL AND BIOLOGICAL WEAPONS AND LABS located in all former Soviet States many being in Georgia and the Ukraine....as well as WE HAVE U.S. MILITARY BIOLOGICAL WEAPONS TEAMS IN RUSSIA.....RIGHT NOW!!!

Continuing to do the JOB as when the Soviet Union Collapsed all those former Soviet Biological Weapons Builders, designers and storage Techs....STOPPED GETTING PAID!!!

    So what did they do?

    THEY JUST WALKED AWAY!!!

Just imagine if for some reason the U.S. Government ceased to exist and all those CDC LABS.....CENTER FOR DISEASE CONTROL LABS located all over the United States as well as LOCATED ALL OVER THE WORLD....because the CDC HAS EMERGENCY UNITED NATIONS SECURITY COUNCIL GRANTED POWERS TO CONTROL ANY CONTAIGEN DEEMED TO BE IMPOSSIBLE TO CONTAIN OR CURE THROUGH CONVENTIONAL MEANS!!!

This means...it doesn't matter if it's MOSCOW....OR NEW YORK CITY....OR LONDON.....OR BEJING, OR PARIS....ETC....the U.S. CENTER FOR DISEASE CONTROL....CDC.....HAS BEEN GIVEN EMERGENCY POWERS BY ALL 5 PERMANENT MEMBERS OF THE U.N. AND HAS BEEN GRANTED EMERGENCY POWERS BY THE ENTIRE U.N. SECURITY COUNSIL which changes in membership except the 5 Permanent members.

    Permanent and Non-Permanent Members
The Council is composed of 15 Members:

The five permanent members: China, France, Russian Federation, the United Kingdom, and the United States,
and ten non-permanent members elected for two-year terms by the General Assembly (with end of term date):
    Angola (2016)
    Chad (2015)
    Chile (2015)
    Jordan (2015)
    Lithuania (2015)
    Malaysia (2016)
    New Zealand (2016)
    Nigeria (2015)
    Spain (2016)
    Venezuela (Bolivarian Republic of) (2016)

In the event a BIO-ENGINEERED CONTAIGEN should break quarantine and or be deemed by the CDC as IMPOSSIBLE TO CURE IN A TIME FRAME NECESSARY PRIOR TO SUPER LARGE NUMBERS OF DEATHS....AND IF THE CDC DETERMINES QUARANTINE CANNOT BE HELD......then the CDC BECOMES THE SINGLE CONTROLLING GOVERNMENTAL BODY ON PLANET EARTH.

The U.S. developed and designed the CDC but the CDC is GLOBAL.

In the event say...some TERRORIST GROUP....gained accesss to some OLD COLD WAR BIO-WEAPON....say a ENGINERED A WEAPONIZED VERSION OF SMALL POX.....or WORSE.....and this Terrorist group WAS STUPID ENOUGH TO USE IT.....and as such a weapon would now only exist in Asia.....it would most likely be used by say.....Sunni Islamic Fanatics against a Shia Nation.....since such Terrorist Groups HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT THEY WOULD BE UNLEASHING.....such a weapon say having dispersed it's Contaigen in Baghdad by say...the ISIS......would be a disease spread so quicly that within 72 to 96 hours Iraq, Iran, Syria, Israel, Jordan, Saudi Arabia...etc....would have at least 10% to 15% of their population infected.

The CDC would make a decision.

Tis decision WOULD BE FULLY SUPPORTED BY ALL 5 PERMANENT MEMBERS OF THE U.N. AS WELL AS THE ENTIRE U.N. SECURITY COUNSIL EVEN IF SOME OF THESE AREAS MIGHT BE THEIR OWN!!!

IMMEDIATELY......U.S. C-17's.....C-5B's....C-5M's.....C-130's........etc......LOADED WITH U.S. DESIGNED BY THE CDC FUEL AIR BOMBS.....WOULD VAPORIZE ANY AREAS WHERE CONTAINMENT HAD BEEN DEEMED IMPOSSIBLE!!!

Now....you ask me.....WHAT DID PUTIN DO IN BREAKING SUCH A DEAL THAT P!$$ED US OFF SO MUCH???

HOW ABOUT PREVENTING OLD SOVIET BIOLOGICAL WEAPONS FROM BEING STOLEN TO PREVENT THE CDC FROM TURING ANY INFECTED AREA INTO WHAT LOOKS SIMILAR TO THE RESULT OF A NUCLEAR WEAPONS DETONATION!!!

    The Russian's and Putin......MADE A DEAL!!!

We PAY......WE DESTROY THESE MONSTEROUS WEAPONS.....WE DO IT ENVIRONMENTALLY SAFE....AND WE ARE STILL DOING IT!!!

And in return.....Russia and Putin PROMISE NEVER TO INVADE OR ATTACK ALL THOSE FORMER SOVIET STATES particularily Gergia and the Ukraine!!!

Go ahead and read the DEAL!!!

There is not one mention of NATO EXPANSION IN THE AGREEMENT!!!

NOT ONE WRITTEN WORD ABOUT IT!!!

Putin and now unfortunately the Russian People are paying.

Russia does not threaten NATO, because it is weaker, but NATO should not help the Ukrainian regime

Strange, but according to people involved with the government at the time, it was Baker who promised Gorbachev that we wouldn't advance even one inch into former Warsaw pact countries....and then Clinton made a liar of Pres. Bush, and his son made a liar of his father, and then Obama made a liar of Bush as well..

First of all I'm not Russian, I'm an American and I can't tolerate injustice...and calumny. You said that the US paid to destroy the nuclear weapons. Well I have news for you, I recall the times, and the fear was that some corrupt military officers might sell those weapons out on the black market. If we destroyed them, it was for our own protection...

Putin's wealthy supporters have pulled their money out from off shore accounts and from foreign countries and brought them and their children back into Russia. They are patriots first and foremost, otherwise Putin would never have had anything to do with them. And they would have been forced to leave Russia a long time ago.

The Russians know the US hates Putin because he cares for Russia and the Russian people and will never sell his country to anyone. They are not idiots like the Ukrainians. They were taught their lesson in the nineties. In addition they have had centuries of aggression from the West and at fifty year intervals, so they take every insult towards Vladimir Putin as an insult towards them, and every pain inflicted on him as an infliction on them. What Washington has done in reality, is create a renaissance in Russia... a renewal of their pride.

Now if you want to know where Putin was. Well it's in this picture below. It just happens to be Lent, and he probably took his annual retreat. And do you want to know what he told the Russian governors to do during their last holiday. He told them to read certain books by three top Russian theologians.

Provide me and the membership ONE PIECE OF EVIDENCE of any kind such as anything in writing that shows that the U.S. made any promises concerning NATO MEMBERSHIP???

You keep bringing this up but the facts are we TOLD RUSSIA we had nothing to do with this as we cannot stop any Nation from applying for NATO MEMBERSHIP!!!

Besides...if Russia was so trusted....why would all these former Soviet Nations or Warsaw Pact Nations be so eager to apply???

    RE
    - The F22 - haven't you heard ? - It's been cancelled, it WAS such a Dog !

& RE - Your 300 enemy Top of the Line all getting shot down
You must of missed this pointed Fact – From The Article:
”These detractors have valid points. Most dire is the fifth generation F-35, on paper,
appears evenly matched against fourth generation rivals like the Su-27 and the Saab
Cripen - Worse, the F-35 JSF really does carry fewer weapons, with a single 25mm -180
round GAU cannon, and only two missiles, and two guided bombs.”

You can put a couple of more missiles on the wings, but as soon as you do that your
STEALTH goes POP ! - Not that, that means much, as the STEALTH has been defeated
    .............................................................................................................................. anyway.

Now how in Hell do 8 to 12, F35’s armed with 24, 24max - count-em, Air to Air missiles
....... shoot down 300 Top of the Line – Do the math Alphy then CHOKE on the Bullcrap !
................................................................. that they feed you, & that you then try to fed to US :flagus:

    Remembering Voltaire's admonishment
"Those who can make you believe Absurdities can make you commit Atrocities ”

Isn't there enough blood on American hands already Alpha?

    Regarding The F35
Just A Few Relevant Quotes From The Various Articles :

“ The belief in quantity could be seen as a point in the F-35’s favor, when comparing it to
its implicit F-22 as a rival for USAF dollars. Even so, it’s prudent to note that the RAND
study revolved around total missiles carried, and the F-35’s internal capacity will be no
larger than half of the F-22’s (no more than 2 missiles, vs. 8 in the F-22A). Equivalent
air-air missile capacity at each aircraft’s maximum stealth configuration thus requires at
least twice as many F-35s as F-22s. Plus the cost of the extra aerial tankers and other
    infrastructure required for long-range missions.

    &
“ The RAND study also spends a great deal of time on the core American assumptions
concerning “beyond visual range” air to air combat, and the current and future
capabilities of SU-30 family aircraft. The implications of its examination do affect the
F-35’s fighting qualities – and they will be significant to some of the plane’s potential
    customers.

    &
“ RAND’s discussion begins by predicting poorer beyond visual range missile kill
performance than current models suggest when facing capable enemy aircraft, observing
that BVR missile kills since the 1990s generally involved poorly-equipped targets. It also
notes the steep rise and then drop in modern infrared missile performance, as
    countermeasures improved.

    &
“ Meanwhile, key radar advances are already deployed in the most advanced Russian
surface-to-air missile systems, and existing IRST (infra-red scan and track) systems
deployed on advanced Russian and European fighters are extending enemy detection
ranges against radar-stealthy aircraft. Fighter radar pick-up capability of up to 25 nautical
miles by 2020 is proposed against even ultra-stealthy aircraft like the F-22, coupled with
IRST ability to identify AMRAAM missile firings and less infrared-stealthy aircraft at
    50 nautical miles or more.

    &
“ The F-35’s lower infrared and radar stealth levels mean that these advances will affect it
more than they’ll affect the F-22. Especially if one assumes a fighter aircraft whose prime
    in-service period stretches to 2050.

    &
“ The clear implication of the RAND study is that the F-35 is very likely to wind up facing
many more “up close and personal” opponents than its proponents suggest, while dealing
with effective beyond-visual-range infrared-guided missiles as an added complication.
Unlike the F-22, the F-35 is described as “double inferior” to modern SU-30 family
fighters within visual range combat; thrust and wing loading issues are summed up in
    one RAND background slide as “can’t [out]turn, can’t [out]climb, can’t [out]run.”

    &
“ Even without new problems, the F-35 is a ‘dog.’ If one accepts every performance
promise the DoD currently makes for the aircraft, the F-35 will be: “Overweight and
    underpowered:
at 49,500 lb (22,450kg) air-to-air take-off weight with an engine rated at
42,000 lb of thrust, it will be a significant step backward in thrust-to-weight ratio for a
    new fighter… [F-35A and F-35B variants] will have a ‘wing-loading’ of 108 lb per
square foot… less manoeuvrable than the appallingly vulnerable F-105 ‘Lead Sled’ that
got wiped out over North Vietnam… payload of only two 2,000 lb bombs in its bomb
bay… With more bombs carried under its wings, the F-35 instantly becomes ‘non-
stealthy’ and the DoD does not plan to seriously test it in this configuration for years. As
a ‘close air support’… too fast to see the tactical targets it is shooting at; too delicate and
    flammable
to withstand ground fire; and it lacks the payload and especially the
endurance to loiter usefully over US forces for sustained periods… What the USAF will
not tell you is that ‘stealthy’ aircraft are quite detectable by radar; it is simply a question
of the type of radar and its angle relative to the aircraft… As for the highly complex
electronics to attack targets in the air, the F-35, like the F-22 before it, has mortgaged its
success on a hypothetical vision of ultra-long range, radar-based air-to-air combat that
has fallen on its face many times in real air war. The F-35’s air-to-ground electronics
promise little more than slicker command and control for the use of existing munitions.”

    &
“ Unfortunately, HMDS is one of the fighter’s most problematic components as of 2014,
and the aircraft design’s single point of failure dependence turns any HMDS problems
    into aircraft-crippling faults.

    &
“ USAF Air Combat Command’s veteran leader, Gen. Michael Hostage,
“The F-35 is not built as an air superiority platform. It needs the F-22.”
”If we don’t keep F-22 Raptor viable, the F-35 fleet will be irrelevant”
Unfortunately the F22 has been cancelled

    &
“ The second issue that deserves especial mention is that key aerial combat standards have
been lowered, following initial tests. All F-35s will sit at 5.0g or less sustained turn
performance – a figure that places them in a class with 1960s era planes like the F-5 or
F-4 Phantom, instead of modern designs like the F-16. Acceleration is also poorer,

    &
“ If a JSF has to leave airspace because it detects the presence of Su-35Ss, PAK-FAs or
    J-20s that it cannot defeat,

    &
“ The aircraft is worse that nothing at all since it underperforms the aircraft it replaces.
Simulations of the F35 against the F15 demonstrate it is inferior to the F15. Simulations
against the latest Russian fighters (that perform at levels similar to our F22) were stark
    and frightening.
In simulations against the latest Russian fighters it was demonstrated that
a single Russian fighter could eliminate over 5 F35s without damage

    &
“ In other words, the F-35 might not be as invisible to radar as prime contractor Lockheed Martin
    ......................................................................................................................................said it would be.”

    &
Air Power Australia declared that the Joint Strike Fighter is not designed to perform air superiority
roles and also is not adapted to performing the long-range penetration strike role

    &
“ Andrew Krepinevich has questioned the reliance on "short range" aircraft like the F-35 or F-22
to "manage" China in a future conflict and has suggested reducing the number of F-35s ordered
in favor of a longer range platform

    &
“ By 2012, Wynne had conceded that America's short ranged fifth-generation fighters would need drop tanks
In November 2014, China unveiled the portable JY-26 Skywatch-U UHF 3-D long-range surveillance
radar system, specifically designed to defeat stealth aircraft like the F-35

RE The F35’s Short Range Limitations

Do your homework fellas ! - the 35’s range is short -
with 18,500 Lbs of Internal fuel F35 Range is 850 mi tops – without drop tanks –
2,200 km or 1,367mi with - Which of coarse destroy its STEALTH capabilities

    Here are the Specs:

    F-35A CTOL:
    Combat radius (internal fuel) >590 n.mi / 1,093 km
    Range (internal fuel) . . ~1,200 n.mi / 2,222 km

    F-35B STOVL:
    Combat radius (internal fuel) >450 n.mi / 833 km
    Range (internal fuel) . . . ~900 n.mi / 1,667 km

    F-35C CV:
    Combat radius (internal fuel) >600 n.mi / 1,111 km
    Range (internal fuel) . . >1,200 n.mi / 2,222 km

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KppyVg4ttLU

That "Pentagon officials" were considering canceling the F-35B because its short range meant that the
forward bases or amphibious ships would have to operate and be in range of hostile tactical ballistic missiles

F35, The Jet That Ate The Pentagon

Here’s What 60 Minutes Didn’t Tell You About the F-35
    http://www.pogo.org/blog/2014/02/heres-what-60-minutes-didnt-tell-you-about-the-f-35.html

"The millions of viewers who tuned into 60 Minutes Sunday may have gotten the
impression that, despite being billions over budget and almost a decade behind schedule,
the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter is ultimately necessary to maintain U.S. air superiority.
That’s an unsurprising conclusion, given that all of the individuals interviewed in the story
work either for the federal government or for Lockheed Martin, the primary contractor
for the F-35. 60 Minutes’ producers broke a basic lesson of Journalism 101 when they
failed to interview anyone who would tell the other side of the F-35 story.

    &
"In a functioning democratic system, public pressure on the politicians in the Pentagon,
the White House and Congress should force them to find a solution. It remains to be
seen, however, just how functional our system is: the public now is far more fully aware
of the many and serious problems in the F-35, but there is no sign yet that any real action
will be taken by the national security decision-makers. I fear that Congress is too fixated
on the pork the F-35 brings to states and congressional districts; the White House is
scared of the tough-minded politics needed to reverse course on the F-35, and most, but
not all, Pentagon managers are too happy to keep on drinking—and passing out—the
    F-35 Kool Aid.
