Progressives are being awfully coy about explaining the reasoning. I wonder why?

    - - - Updated - - -

That's a good point. Will the school support a group of students who feel it's provocative and offensive to celebrate another country's holiday, when we had a war with that country?

Dunno. Do the kids say the Pledge of Allegiance often, or just when people won't object?

No, I seriously want to know. Do the they wear American flag t-shirts on Saint Patrick's day? Or is this only a thing they do on "Cinco De Mayo"?

Some of the kids wearing the American Flag shirts were Hispanic.

If the American flag offends someone, they do not belong in this country. Perhaps China is taking applications?

I suspect because they knew it was an attempt to be disruptive and to try and shame them for being proud of their Mexican heritage. Then again, who knows.

What I am certain of is those students almost certainly don't wear an American flag t-shirt on Saint Patricks day.

The American flag is a powerful symbol that is commonly used in demonstrations both for and against various political issues both inside and outside America. Suggesting it has no disruptive power is naive at best.

In the case in point, the flag was construed to be objectionable both because it was being used in a confrontive manner and was in direct opposition to the objectives of the event.

But why would an American flag be "disruptive" and "shame" them? Don't they live in America? Don't they like this country more than Mexico?

But if they did, I doubt Irish kids would be offended by it.

Come on Brew, you and I both know these kids don't wear American flag t-shirts on Saint Patricks day, or any other day for that matter. Which makes their intentions clear.

That's a very vague answer. Can you be a little more specific? Why, exactly, would students with Mexican heritage by offended by the American flag when they live in America?

Why would it be confrontational? They're American citizens (or residents), right? And how does an American flag oppose the objectives of Cinco de Mayo? Wasn't that between Mexico and the French?

    - - - Updated - - -

I'm just trying to understand why a group of Mexican students, in America, would be offended by the American flag. Do they not like America?

When people oppose "causing a disruption" instead of actual disruption then they are basically giving the keys to the lowest common denominator. In this case that was these Mexicans.

If my American flag provokes or disrupts your sensitivities, whether it's on my flag pole or on my T-shirt... well .... tough (*)(*)(*)(*).

Maybe they noticed these kids only wore them because it was cinco de mayo? And why do you think that is?

I'm still trying to figure out if these kids wear American flag t-shirts on Saint Patricks day. If so, why not?

The way I'm reading this thread is Mexicans can be proud of their country and Americans can't.

Wearing an American flag is intolerant, celebrating a Mexican holiday in America isn't.

Mexicans can offend Americans, Americans can't offend Mexicans.

Reality check: I've lived in El Paso for 2 years and they don't give a crap about Cinco de Mayo. Now ask the Mexican students who were offended by the American flag if they even know what Cinco de Mayo celebrates. I'm guessing most wont know.

How do you know what they wear on Saint Patricks day, or any other day for that matter?

I thought you knew they didn't, do you think making ignorant comments is going to help you "figure it out"? If so you should know by now.

The flag was being used as a symbol of anti-Mexican sentiment. It was confrontation.

The event was essentially a cultural exchange intended to engender understanding. While confrontation over culture, race, nationalism, etc. is rarely acceptable in k-12 school environment, it should be pretty darn clear that such confrontation is definitely not part of a cultural exchange event.

I have no idea how you got so confused about the French. The bigotry some in America show for the French is of a different source than the bigotry some in America show toward our Hispanic population. And, this event had nothing to do with the French as far as I know.

Maybe they just took it as (an obvious) statement about cinco de mayo

A cultural "EXCHANGE", you say? Sounds more like Mexicans forcing their culture on Americans, and then wanting to fight about it if they get some culture in "exchange".

Have patience. Collectively the Left is getting this nation there just as quickly as they possibly can . . . one ruling at a time. Fortunately I will be dead and gone before I have to learn to address my peers as "Comrade' lest a leftwinger send me to a re-education camp. So that's something anyway.

I remember when a guy wore the flag as a diaper to court, so I can think of ways I would consider it disruptive

surely you would agree with me there and not think how could that be disruptive, it's just a flag?
