I just checked and discovered that there's Mercury in LCD screens. You should back slowly away from your computer (but not toward the TV) and never post here again.

I'm only thinking of your brain, nervous system, liver and kidneys.

There is Mercury in oil and Koch has interests in oil and oil transportation. No one cares.

Also of note...an L.E.D. bulb does not produce UV light unless deigned to do so...thus are they Bug Lights for outdoor use.

I also agree that the advancements in LED technology have made me an advocate and I've converted almost all of my lighting to LED lighting. Some is fluorescent tube lighting (in the garage) that I haven't changed but that's about all. All socket light bulbs have been changed.

If I recall correctly about 90% of the electircal energy for an incandescent light bulb is emitted as heat and not light. This is fine when the weather is cold and you're heating your house anyway but it's bad during the summer when you might be running the air conditioner. While LED bulbs are heat sensitive and would require heating in cold climates outdoors the heat energy is only what's necessary and is not a constant form of heat energy being created by an incandescent bulb. Exterior LED lighting that requires supplemental heat for part of the year is still more cost and energy effecient than an incandescent light bulb.

The $14 LED bulb I had on my back steps that was supposed to last 10 years lasted a year.....I may go back to the old timey bulbs that are still gettable.

As opposed to the intellectually superior liberals who insist on solar panels which even have a bigger environmental impact?

The problem with the led bulbs is the higher exposure to mercury versus the natural occurring when one ofnthem explodes. Wonder why the "intellectually superior" liberals missed that one.

I have two fluorescent fixtures in my kitchen. The LED undercounter strips I use are not bright enough to gut the fixtures and replace. Hopefully there will be something in the near future else I will replace them entirely.

You can look at it that way, and I agree that LEDs are a much better bulb than incandescents and compact fluorescent bulbs are truly the bane of modern humanity, but there is still a lesson to be learned here. The Federal and state governments have been propping up compact fluorescent bulbs for close to two decades now. The government has provided subsidies for the manufacture of CFBs, had CFB giveaways, and have spent millions in advertising CFBs. This support has made it more difficult for an unsubsidized product like LED bulbs to get to market. The result of the government interference was that LEDs, a much superior product to CFBs is finally hitting the market close to a decade later than it should have if the government just quit meddling. And just what compelling reason did the government have which required it to inject itself into a free market which would have brought us better solutions at a lower price, sooner?

Lessons to be learned are that the government is a really bad at picking winners and losers in a free-market economy and that is a righteous endeavor to try to limit future government forays into arenas which it has no expertise or a proven track record of success.

2ft x 4 ft 50 Watt LED panel luminaire. Might be brighter than you need. Other sizes are available. You might have to buy directly from Chinese suppliers. China is the center of LED luminaire design and manufacture. Some amazing products available.

No ballast hum; instant switch on; dimmable.

Does it have to be spherical to be called a bulb?

Early 90's maybe? The laws on fluorescent changed and they have to be treated like toxic waste.

I've had pretty good luck with them. About 5 or 6 years ago, I started replacing my lights (as they burned out) with CFLs. I've only replaced a few since. One was in a fixture that burned out regular bulbs about once a year. It was an inconvenient place. The CFL I put in there lasted 5 years, and I replaced it about a year ago with an LED. I'm against the federal rules that are banning the manufacture of certain incandescent bulbs. The country was going over to them by the power of the marketplace. IMHO, putting in the mandate actually hurt acceptance of the CFLs and LEDs. I live in the Sun belt. CFLs/LEDs make good sense here. I use A/C more than I use heat, so the CFLs/LEDs save me twice--they are cheaper in terms of electricity for light, but more importantly, they don't put as much heat into my house that I have to pump out (with the A/C).

Office buildings don't use CFLs, they use FLs. (CFLs are the compact fluorescents).

I once did a seat of the pants calculation, and if coal is used to make the electricity, the amount of mercury in the environment from a CFL, even if the CFL is broken, is less than the amount of mercury produced by coal power. I don't know about you, but I'm careful with all fluorescents, and recycle them at Lowes. Just common sense, which unfortunately isn't common anymore.

I get amused by my fellow conservatives on the CFL mercury issue. They sound like a bunch of chicken little liberals complaining about it.

    I appreciate the CFL/FL clarification. :)

Recycling is something that is important and I even recycle old batteries although with rechargeable devices these days that has been significantly reduced.

Chicken Littles manage to latch onto every potential "conspiracy" regardless of political persuasion in my experience. I was highly amused by the "power lines cause cancer" debacle which was one of the first that I ever encountered. Millions of birds and animals live their lives in close proximity to power lines and if they were dropping dead from cancer someone would have made the connection.

Conclusion: The Poisonous Energy Saving Light Bulb industry and its lobbyists contribute heavily to powerful Washington politicians.

And Steve what are you doing on the computer? LCD screens have Mercury! And I hope you didn't go outside today because there's air and soil out there with Mercury.

Did you eat any light bulbs today?

And why do you suppose, amongst other reasons, cancer and pretty much everything else has increased 100-fold+ in the last 6 to 7 decades?

    It's not rocket science.

CFLs, cell phones, heavily processed food...there ya have it!

CFL's and cell phones have only been around for a very short time.

The use of pesticides and artificial additives in food are definitely a factor in cancer rates but that has nothing whatsoever to do with the OP.

Oh, lookie! Someone thinks the only way to ingest something is through the mouth!

Yeah, just since the 70s, close to 50 years, which is about the time the cancer business exploded. Cancer is exceptionally good for the economy, doncha know.
