Isn't likely my ass, downright impossible IMO.

He wouldn't be able to give me the gun, I'd be gone through the exit already. Not a cop in the world won't tell you that's exactly what you should do. Assuming you get to the area how are you supposed to even know who to shoot. You don't know who they are nor how many, nor if anyone is shooting back. You could just as easily kill all any surviving victims and enable the shooters to get away free and clear.

Hypotheticals are one of the stupidest forms of argument known, "If my grandmother had wheels would she be a bus?" makes about as much sense as most of them

No, it is not impossible. It may surprise you that what is impossible for you to comprehend isn't impossible for everyone. It would be very unlikely for a large department, but no so unlike for small, local departments. Small departments tend to take more individual interests in people rather than seeing people as the endless herd, and smaller departments tend to have less rules and more officer discretion. Some towns have a police force of one and that one lone officer may have occasions he/she asks for citizen's assistance. There are other situations where an officer would possibly or even likely hand off his sidearm.

Years ago an officer asked me to take his backup in a situation that would take some time to explain. I didn't accept it, but I didn't need it to assist him - which I did.

Nor is the hypothetical that I gave an argument, it is a question. It also is a question irrelevant to you as you stated before this could happen you would have run out the exit.

    <Rule 2>

You'd be surprised, that is unless you personally know every cop in the world? Many would like for someone like myself to do what I can.

The same way the cops do, you do know that cops are people to right, that they don't have super powers?

    She'd be a stool bus

I have two CCs a 1911 Springfield .45 mil spec, shoulder or in close prox with my other gun. A J framed Smith and Wesson revolver chambered for .38. Its stainless and hammerless, but only holds only five rounds. But what rounds they are! Well good but not great, three FBI loads and 2 Plus Ps, I usually carry four speed loaders too. 1, 10 round mag for the full frame 45, all hollow points. Tailored for where I use them, and is the reason for small capacity, but mega knockdown. I have a car vending route picking money up from the machines so the owners dont get ripped off for a large amount, and its at night! I would see my threats coming from a distance. So I like good knock down. If I were were in a target rich area I would carry two hi cap Glock 40s or 9s

Yes, I would go with him if I were fairly sure he was a cop, but since its a hypo he can offer a civ a firearm...lol. If that happened in real life I would leave because as some of you said that is a big violation at most PDs, my luck he would be the perp!

    Great replies everyone! ~

You seem to have missed the point. He's not forcing you to do it, he's asking you to. You're free to (*)(*)(*)(*) off all you want.

If you aren't experienced with a gun then it's probably the best choice. Heck, even if you are experienced, you're putting yourself in a lot of legal trouble by not retreating. Is it worth it? Probably not. If I was myself a hostage in the bank then sure, I'd leave their children fatherless, but if I had the choice to run away sure why not.

No I would be the hero for stopping the active shooter with his own gun, but since nobody would ever know, I wouldn't be getting the key to the city, a book deal, and a press tour.

It said, "identified himself as an off duty officer". And how would you feel about it once it was on the news that an off duty officer was found murdered? I am betting pretty proud of yourself.

They would just blame a black guy so I'd be okay, but that does not change that 1) the hypothetical does not involve a badge and 2) no cop worth his salt would ever do that.

What do you think "identified" as a police officer meant? You think some random stranger is going to blurt out "Iam a cop, take a gun"?
And if the fire fight was bad enough and you looked like a possible friend and not a foe. You may find yourself being handed a gun.
To which you can reply, heck no and run away.

No, they would blame you and you would go to a super-max prison for life without parole since there is no death sentence in California.

First off, never trust your life to a gun YOU have not fired and checked yourself. What a tragedy if the gun went click.

Second, I would likely stand my ground and have others retreat behind me with the pocket gun unless one of my own loved ones was in the building. Not having at least a ballistic vest on would be worth risk---cops usually have them on.

Best to stay low in a blind corner and kill the bad guys if they try to enter.

Nope. They would never catch me, but if they did, it would be to give me some big medal for stopping the guy pretending to be a cop going around killing people.

One question, assuming I don't run away, how does the cop know I'm not one of the shooters myself, detailed to come in only if something goes wrong?. One reason I say the cop's action is impossible is that I credit policemen with a certain degree of intelligence. They don't just hand out weaponry to all and sundry at the first opportunity to form a posse. If he'd run and I accompanied him and then he stopped down the hall and said, "this isn't your affair and I said, "I want to help" then his actions become somewhat more rational, still not likely, but at least not something either a moron or a raving lunatic would be the only one to even think of.

Not even a doubt....I'm taking the 380. Someone willing to hand me a loaded weapon isn't a bad guy so I'm going on faith and helping however I can.

I would go with him, but if the other side of the building was the BLM conference, or Obama supporters might change my mind

It's a very risky thing to "cowboy up" during an armed confrontation that involves the police. Even with the best of intentions, you could find yourself being charged with various kinds of crimes, and even if you don't end up going to prison, you could be out THOUSANDS of dollars trying to defend yourself in court, lose your job, spend hundreds of hours trying to go through nerve-wracking interrogations, and have your own life go straight down the toilet.

The best thing to do, believe it or not, is to let the police handle "shooter" situations and only use firearms in the defense of yourself, your loved ones, and (maybe) your property. Just because you intended to be a hero and do the right thing, don't ASSUME that the police and the law are going to be on your side!

In your hundred years as a federal prosecutor, how many incidents did you encounter in which a law enforcement officer surrendered a weapon he may would need in the midst of a firefight to do his job to some random civilian because he was scared?

That's what I thought. Can you point to a single incident anywhere in the US in the last 30 years in which a police officer gave up a weapon to a civilian to assist him or her in a shoot out?
