Enough plutonium for 6 nuclear bombs with KN-08 missile range to hit California...
    :omg:
North Korea has secured 88 pounds of plutonium, Seoul official says
Dec. 25, 2015 - A minimum of 13 pounds of plutonium is required to manufacture a nuclear weapon.

Thing is the U.S. is perfectly capable of shooting down any Korean Ballistic Missile well before it ever reached even Hawaii.

And if Korea actually launched.....and their missiles are inaccurate in the extreme....and they have yet to demonstrate any ability during their underground nuclear tests to even achieve a proper fission detonation....never mind their claim to have developed a Fusion device which I and most people doubt in the extreme......but if they launched....we would shoot it down....and we would IMMEDIATELY know if this thing had a nuclear warhead from our radiation detection capabilities....and if it did......SAY GOODBYE TO NORTH KOREA!!!

Doubt if Japan would have enough time to react...

... if it were the target.

The U.S. Navy has a Nimitz Class Carrier Strike Group based in Japan and these U.S. Carrier groups have Ticonderoga Class Aegis Cruisers which are equipped with the SM-3 AA/ABM/ASAT which is capable of intercepting and downing Ballistic Missiles.

They are accurate in the extreme and during Operation Burt Frost an SM-3 launched from the USS. Lake Erie...a Ticonderoga Class Aegis Cruiser targeted and destroyed only a PART of a failing satellite that being a Hydrazine Booster Fuel Tank and the SM-3 directly impacted and detonated JUST the Tank traveling as part of that satellite orbiting the earth at 16,500 mph at ORBITAL DISTANCE.

Here is the video of the actual shoot down as the SM-3 was visually followed by a telescope.

I was just thinking to AEGIS units developed in the area by US Navy. Not only to eventually protect Japan from North Korea, but overall to protect Taiwan from an eventual attempt of invasion by China [China would open the dance launching missiles, you know ...].

The thing is China was actually planning an Invasion of Taiwan in 2008 and again in 2011.

U.S. War Planners smartly invited the Chinese Military Brass to watch massive U.S. Military War Games both at sea and in air and on land.

This is what Chinese General Chen Bingde had to say....

    DECADES BEHIND THE WEST?

Chen played down Chinese military advances on his trip, telling the audience of U.S. military officers and faculty at the National Defense University the People's Liberation Army lagged at least 20 years behind developed Western nations.

"To be honest, I feel very sad after visiting (the United States), because I think, I feel and I know, how poor our equipments are and how underdeveloped we remain," Chen said.

Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman of the U.S. military's Joint Chiefs of Staff and Chen's host, stressed the importance of renewed dialogue to minimize the risk of misunderstanding.

"What he and I have both talked about is a future that is a peaceful future and a better one for our children and grandchildren. That does not include a conflict between China and the United States," Mullen told reporters.

Plus any attempted Chinese Invasion of Taiwan would result in the sinking of every PLN Troop Carrying ship by U.S. Subs and the USAF before they ever got within 100 miles of Taiwan.

China is not ready for a global conflict. And a confrontation with US can become a global conflict on large scale in a while. It's not only NAVY lacks [on surface: no battle groups with battle carriers; under the surface: Chinese subs are not suitable for underwater hunt and combat, as for I know of course, Chinese Air Force has got in service some good anti submarine units, but nothing expecial] which would suggest to Beijing to renounce to attack Taiwan, but in case of such an attack, the Americans could retaliate carrying the conflict on the continent, in the Chinese inland. Chinese strategical coordinated defenses cannot [if they are coordinated for real!] face the force projection capability of the United States. Period.

    No...they cannot.

The Chinese PLA and PLN Leadership are keenly aware of this problem.

However the Chinese Communist Party Leadership was not and it was not until after the U.S. invited the PLN and PLA Leadership to the U.S. to watch actual U.S. War games that Chinese Military Leaders like General Chen Bingde were able to confront the Chinese Communist Party Leaders over their absolutely insane plans to invade Taiwan.

The PLA and PLN Leadership told the Communist Leadership that any such attempted invasion of Taiwan would result in the complete obliteration of all Chinese Invasion Forces.

After this the Chinese Communist Party Leadership settled down and have abandoned such insane plans.

The U.S. Military would not leave a single Chinese Ship or Sub intact....and USAF Stealth Bombers would wipe out any invasion fleet and aircraft in ports on on the ground.

It wouldn't be that simple, you know that, especially in the current atmosphere of the political world.

Boo hoo we can't harm civilians, thousands of US troops dead for no other reason than to feel better about ourselves.

I wish it were as simple as you speak, but that would take near insurrection for the politicians to listen.

I have seen the contingency plans.

North Korea launches a Nuke we would shoot it down.

If North Korea....and this is fully possible....tunneled under the DMZ and placed a small nuke and detonated it....we would use Nuclear Weapons against the North.

    Small....75 Kiloton tactical's.

    But we would use them.

If they launched one I sincerely doubt our political leaders would have the back bone to send one back.

They've already made many a tunnel beneath the dmz, some you can drive two tanks through side by side, been a few documentaries about them so that is completely possible.

However, if we shot one of theirs down in intercept I just don't see the retaliation that should happen, happen.

If it (a NK inbound nuke ICBM) was intercepted and destroyed safely over water then there is no need to retaliate with nuclear devices. Conventional strikes to cripple their military entirely yes, then let China move in and absorb NK into China. China would not want anyone else owning that piece of real estate, so let em have it.

The North Koreans may be crazy, but they are not stupid. They know full well that if they ever launched even one missile towards the United States they would cease to exist. Red China know this as well and would take whatever measures necessary to prevent a missile launch from NK. I wouldn't be too worried.

    Are you kidding!!!???

We shoot down a North Korean nuke intended to hit the U.S. and we determine it had a Nuclear Warhead on it when we shot it down!!!???

We would end the existence of North Korea!

You don't think its unnecessary to use nukes if you don't have too? It's not exactly proportionate or discriminate, and would make life very difficult in South Korea with the resultant radioactive pollution.

I don't know why you Americans focus on the role of the president when your form of government makes the execusive branch more or less toothless. It's the entire US political system that needs an overhaul along with the constitution and the obscene permissiveness that allows cashed up lobbyists far, far more power in Congress than they should ever have had.

Actually I would move to upgrade and develop in the USA the next generation of missiles and warheads to bring our options into the 21st century for our main deterrent option.

Then we need to think about expecting China to oversee North Korea as the regional power, with joint invasion plans if they do fire a nuclear missile at us and it does hit something.

OK, now we are talking about my area of specialty. What they have are mock-ups (fakes) of a close copy of the TOPOL-M series Russian missile. And yes, they are all fakes. None has ever been tested.

    KN-08, circa 2012:

Now if these all look like different missiles, they are. Some are 2 stage, some 3. None of these is believed to be an actual missile, simply a shell made to look like a missile. Not all that uncommon, the Soviets did the same thing with the SS-X-10 "Scrag" missile.

They paraded these things for years in Red Square parades. And it scared many in the West out of their panties. However, they never actually ever made one. All those tests were failures, and when the ABM Treaty was signed in 1972, they were more then happy to add this as a system to be destroyed. No loss, since it never worked in the first place.

Personally, I doubt that the US would nuke them. But it would be for other reasons, not because of fear.

If the North Koreans were crazy enough to try it, I think within hours US bombers would be striking key missile sites all around their country. And a full mobilization would follow into South Korea, with an invasion designed to totally destroy them as an independent nation.

Within 18 months, a new unified Korea will be the result. And this time neither Russia nor China would do a thing to prevent the US form doing that (and might even actually help).

No need to nuke them, when we can utterly destroy them conventionally.

However, unless we ever actually deploy AEGIS Ashore, I doubt we could intercept their missile in flight. We would have to be damned lucky with where one of our AEGIS ships is located to even have a chance of doing that.

    YOUR RIGHT!!!!

They acted in the Negotiation Room as if they were making this HUGE CONCESSION!!! LOL!!!

However I think they did build a few even though every single test was a massive failure!!!

If I can remember they built a few and had them fully constructed for the single purpose of trying to get us to think they worked and that the Soviet's had deployed them....but they didn't.

The U.S. Weapons System that North Korea fears the most is the B-2's and F-22's and F-35's all loaded to hit them without any warning.

The North has dug MASSIVE and numerous underground tunnels under the DMZ which we are very much aware where and how large each one is.

Since the DMZ is so close to Seoul the North Korean's have enormous numbers of artillery pieces set up all along their side of the DMZ and unless the U.S. and South Korea were able to knock them all out the South Korean Capital of Seoul would take a massive pounding by North Korean artillery and sort range missiles.

There is no doubt that the United States and South Korea would prevail but the damage caused by a North Korean Conventional First Strike would kill a huge number of people.

If the North launched a Nuclear Tipped Missile....we are ready to shoot it down.

But if this missile fired by the North and intended to hit say...Hawaii....as any North Korean Missile shot at the U.S.....with their missiles are inaccurate in the extreme and very likely might impact Canada or fall into the Pacific.....but if we shot it down and it was determined it was a Nuke.....THE GLOVES WOULD COME OFF!!!

Using a Thermonuclear Weapons...even a small one of say 25 Kiloton's and that is TINY as Hiroshima was 12 Kilotons so a B-2 would have to drop it as our Ohio Class Sub's Trident II D-5 Missiles which carry a number of MIRVed warheads....Warhead (in US usage only): The Mark 5 MIRV can carry up to 14 W88 (475 kt) warheads, while the Mark 4 MIRV can also carry 14 W76 (100 kt) warheads.

Even if a Trident D-5 II SLBM was reset to carry just a single W76 100 Kt Thermonuclear Warhead.....a 100 Kiloton Warhead even being what the U.S. Considers to be a SMALL TACTICAL THERMONUCLEAR WEAPON....would if detonated in North Korea spread Radiation all over that area North, South, China, Japan...etc.

It would be better for the U.S. to use Massive Conventional Retaliation which we are quite capable of doing and it is possible in the case and actual Nuclear Missile was launched at the U.S. from North Korea that a few launches from VANDENBERG....Space Launch Complex 8 (SLC-8), is a launch pad at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California might occur.

Why.....to put into Orbit for use what is only known by the name writer Tom Clancy gave it as it's real name is Classified....that name being......The ROD'S OF GOD ORBITAL PLATFORM.

I happen to know these exist but they have never been launched into orbit as that would violate a few treaties.

The Rod's of God system is an Orbital Platform arrangement of between 9, 12 or 16 Telephone Pole sized Depleted Uranium Core wrapped in Tungsten Steel with Ceramic Heat Cone atop the reentry Missile Tip end and a small rocket motor on the bottom and maneuvering thrusters in several areas.

Their Guidance is Classified although it could be GPS and Starlight Combo.

Once released the reenter Earth's atmosphere at incredible speeds and depending upon angle of attack they can reach velocities well over 36,000 mph.

There are no explosives.....the Kinetic Energy Transfer upon impact of a target is equal to the force released from a small to medium yield Nuclear Bomb.....as F=MA....thus the higher the velocity at impact....the greater the Force of kinetic energy transfer and release.

These would only be used in a dire emergency.

    But they exist.
