We Stand on Guard for Thee
Canada—that oft-parodied frozen realm of hockey arenas and Celine Dion—is more interesting than half of the American states.

With a Montreal mother and a Massachusetts father, I am literally the product of Canadian-American relations, but even I recognize that the topic generally could be said to lack a certain vivacity. It is the snoozy Ambien of (North) American academic life, featuring sleep-inducing words like “Manitoba’’ and “cross-boundary trade’’—even though cross-border knowledge is painfully limited.

For most Americans, Canada is an ice-encrusted realm of wheat fields, hockey arenas, moose and Celine Dion. This may not be the venue to say that Canada is more interesting than half of the American states (and fitted with better supermarkets), but it is the place to give a tip of the Mountie’s hat to Robert Bothwell’s “Your Country, My Country,” a book that crosses and recrosses the boundaries between the two countries, the better to explain each to the other.

There are, to be sure, many things that Canada and the United States have in common. Mr. Bothwell notes that for most of the past century the two shared the ease that came from “security from harm or want.” They have also shared alternating periods of liberalism and conservatism, though usually not in tandem. Thrifty Canada was devoutly conservative through the 1960s, while the United States experimented with big-dreaming, big-spending liberalism. Then the two countries swapped positions, Canada going on a liberal jag while the United States embraced a Reaganite skepticism of government. Until recently, Canada had a conservative prime minister to offset America’s liberal president. Then, in November, Justin Trudeau, the head of the Liberal Party, became Canada’s new leader, upsetting the usual do-si-do along the 49th parallel.

    Interesting!

Could Canada having a truly "Liberal" .... (in virtually all senses of the word), Prime Minister, imply that America may be prepared for a more "Conservative" era??????

Donald Trump can be a GREAT President because.......

… of his deep level of empathy with the greatest forces that are keeping the average American down!

I saw two documentaries about The Donald yesterday evening. When I saw the part about how he purchased the Taj Mahal through financing arranged by about twenty different banks. When I heard that he had agreed to pay them a high rate of interest. I knew that The Donald had been guided by G-d to have a deep empathy for the situation faced by President Abraham Lincoln.

Do you agree that Canada is hip? Is Trudeau really the JFK of Canada? Will Canada's position in the world continue to rise?

With the Rise of Justin Trudeau,
    Canada Is Suddenly ... Hip?
By PETER STEVENSON JAN. 16, 2016

Last October, at the Louis Vuitton spring 2016 women’s fashion show on the outskirts of Paris, a male beauty in a white T-shirt, white-and-black bomber jacket and black pants waded into a blizzard of flashbulbs and cries of “Xavier!” As he took his seat between Michelle Williams and Catherine Deneuve, fashion editors tilted their heads. Who was this man? Why was he in the front row?

A quick Internet search would have told them that he was the 26-year-old filmmaker Xavier Dolan, a darling of the 2014 Cannes Film Festival and the star of a new advertising campaign for Louis Vuitton’s Ombré collection who would go on to direct Adele’s “Hello” video.

His obscurity may have something to do with the fact that he is from Canada, the country that gave the world ice hockey, the snow blower and Labatt beer.

But the notion that our neighbor to the north is a frozen cultural wasteland populated with hopelessly unstylish citizens is quickly becoming so outdated as to be almost offensive. Two weeks after the Louis Vuitton show, Justin Trudeau, the muscular, blue-eyed, social-media-savvy son of the former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, was swept into power, along with his Liberal Party, in a surprise win over Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s Conservative government.

In the months since his election, Mr. Trudeau, 44, the 6-foot-2 self-described feminist, who has been a television actor, snowboarding instructor and amateur boxer, has assumed the role of world leader with a heart. In December, to the delight of the Twitterati, he welcomed a planeload of Syrian refugees with the phrase “You’re safe at home now,” while helping them into warm coats.

Vogue magazine wasted no time anointing Mr. Trudeau the “New Young Face of Canadian Politics,” noting that “the new prime minister is dashing in his blue suit and jaunty brown shoes.” Rupert Murdoch’s New York Post could not resist running a 2006 photo of a louche Mr. Trudeau, in torn bluejeans and an unbuttoned black chemise, with the headline “Hunky Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Is the JFK Jr. of Canada.”

United States citizens grimacing over a political and cultural landscape riven by a brassyreal estate kingpin, endlessly recycled superheroes and reality-show dopes may be forgiven for looking northward with yearning.

As Mr. Trudeau and his wife, Sophie Grégoire-Trudeau (along with their three young children, Xavier, Ella-Grace and Hadrien), create a Canadian Camelot, they are casting light on a wider eruption already in progress.

An expanse once stereotyped as the home to square-jawed Mounties and beer-swilling“hosers” has quietly morphed into a multicultural breeding ground that has given us the Weeknd, who can’t feel his face; the director Sarah Polley, who makes films of subtle power; and the upstart fashion designer Tanya Taylor, whose creations have been worn by Michelle Obama.

The rapper Drake, of Toronto, comes in for a little ribbing now and then, but none other than Jay Z called him the Kobe Bryant of hip-hop. And even the latest album from Justin Bieber, the pride of Stratford, Ontario (population 33,430), is — gulp! — pretty terrific.

I actually do have high expectations that P. M. Justin Trudeau can become a major leader in a movement that will transform Canadian and world politics!

He will not be able to do this by himself though........... I believe that he needs a truly well informed opponent such as Mr. Peter MacKay to raise the calibre of debate up here in Canada in such a way that Americans will be looking at what is going on with genuine interest.

I left P. M. Trudeau's Liberal Party in December of 2015 and joined Canada Conservative Party in order to more effectively encourage Mr. Peter MacKay to come out of retirement and campaign to become national leader of the Conservative Party.

The rather dogmatic climate change skepticism that characterized of the P. M. Stephen Harper administration can......... be replaced by a much more INCLUSIVE approach!

    ..................

Retired P. M. Stephen Harper is in so many ways the perfect person to send to the nation of Israel to negotiate a win - win - win - win scenario that results in the nation of Jordan being turned green!

    P. M. Justin Trudeau, in my opinion, is the perfect world leader to send to the nation of Jordan to put all of this together in such a way that everybody can see that this is a major step in the right direction.

    http://www.politicalforum.com/canad...ts-take-937-those-syrian-refugees-canada.html
Mr. Justin Trudeau, let's take 937 of those Syrian refugees to Canada?
Mr. Justin Trudeau, I am truly impressed to see that you also met with King Abdullah of Jordan during his recent visit.

For years now I have been thinking that documentary, reality and semi-reality science fiction film projects can be used to address some of the massive problems that humanity is facing.

Please pray or meditate on Canada's P. M. brokering Jordan - Israel peace deal?
I know that many of you pray or meditate so please

pray that P. M. Stephen Harper initiate a peace deal between Jordan and Israel?

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am a member of a different Canadian political party but……… I have to admit that P. M. Stephen Harper is for good reason regarded as a rather "Davidic" figure by a high percentage of Israelis.

What he did for Israel back in 2011 at the G-8 was one of the most courageous and wise acts by a political leader that I have seen since I began to watch world events back in the '70's!

To further the liberal program of wusification of heterosexual males

Canada seeks a "gender neutral" anthem change.

And a cabinet determined by gender, not ability.

The conservatives never seem to be quite skeptical enough of government to actually reduce its size, power and cost - makes one wonder.

Justin Trudeau is hip and I hope that he is a better man than JFK was. Kennedy by all reports was a lecherous scumbag. That being said, Canada is not hip even if there are some interesting Canadians. In international affairs, it's better to fly under the radar. People only notice other countries when they are up to nasty shenanigans.

On the other hand I have to admit that P. M. Trudeau is probably onto something that Gay Syrian men are unlikely to be hatching plans to do some sort of terrorist act!

    Good point!

One of the largest moves in Canadian history to reduce the size and power of government was done by Liberal P. M. Mackenzie King.

Which is one of the reasons why I decided to leave Canada's Liberal Party and join the Conservatives after beginning to advocate that we should discuss the positive side to the theological possibility of America and Canada fulfilling the role of the "beast" of Revelation chapter 13??????

    http://www.politicalforum.com/religion-philosophy/428114-canadians-americans-we-beast-rev.html
Canadians and Americans, are WE the Beast of Rev and....
......Revelation 13:4..."And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him? "

Now I must admit that there are serious advantages to being the world's greatest military superpower..............

and....... I must admit that I personally like the fact that the F-35 and F-22 Raptors make the fighter jets of all other nations seem like kids toys in comparison...........

    http://www.politicalforum.com/canad...orrect-abt-f-35-being-best-our-air-force.html

Could P. M. Stephen Harper be correct abt the F-35 being the best for our air force?

Had a conversation with a well educated businessman from New Zealand who described a "socialist" leader who dismantled much of a failing socialist system there decades ago. Will try to did out the details. Blair seemed to be more leery of central power than Cameron is. Of course the war was probably instructive for Blair.

FDR, was under tremendous pressure to nationalize key industries. Conservatives despise him, but many of the programs associated with the New Deal were started by Hoover - a progressive Republican. A strong case can be made that FDR saved the COTUS and free enterprise.

From what I have read FDR was somewhat forced into his positive reforms by a grass roots movement that had already swept through one thousand communities in the USA.

FDR was to the right of the US Chamber of Commerce which favored nationalizing some major industries during the Great Depression. FDR resisted the forces pushing for socialism much to the Chagrin of zealots like Father Coughlin, Huey Long, and Upton Sinclair.

The real history of The Great Depression is not well known. Reagan said he had not moved to the right since he supported FDR.

    Interesting!

What do you think of the ideas expressed in the article that I quote in the opening post here?

    http://www.politicalforum.com/opini...etary-policy-central-american-revolution.html

Is it historically accurate that monetary policy was central to American Revolution?
I am wondering if the following article is basically accurate or largely inaccurate historically?

I have researched issues relating to money and banking periodically over the years. The more I learn the less I know. This is from my last effort to understand money:

"Alexander Justice wrote in 1707, "Money in general is divided into two sorts, imaginary and real." A general Treatise of Monies and Exchanges [London, 1707]… Justice's "real money" is money of exchange. It is issued by virtually all sovereign states and consists of coins and paper that pass physically from hand to hand. Justice's "imaginary money" is called money of account it exists only as an idea, and is used in bookkeeping and credit transactions." The Great Wave, Price Revolutions and the Rhythm of History, David Hackett Fischer. Oxford University Press, NY, NY, 1996.p. 282.

When it comes to money there is always room for mischief. With "Imaginary money" the mischief is apparently limited only by the human imagination.

Yes..... so much of the value of money is related to our psychology and 98% of the money supply in Canada is never printed but instead exists only as a number on an account somewhere!

A factor that can alter the value that we place on human life...…(and therefore how we allocate money).... is the idea of a Creative Force who has evolved...… and learned.... and experimented....... over essentially infinite time in the past..... A Creative Force who has planned and engineered an essentially infinite number of Big Bang events?!

If....... that sort of intelligence exists..... then maybe..... just maybe.... that Creator places nearly infinite value on each and every human life........... whereas our elites have a tendency to place far too much value on a shiny metal or gem?!

Mellen Benedict was an Atheist previous to his brush with death.

It is amazing how many similarities exist between what he reports viewing in the higher dimensions with the theories that Stephen Hawking Ph. D. puts forward in chapter 13, "The Anthropic Principle", in " Stephen Hawking's Universe."

Beyond the basic 'prime mover unmoved' concept which I find irresistible, I am rather secular. But I do not reject the idea of an active creative force in the world. In fact I found this little "gem" to bolster your argument:

"… in the Pacific, the 14th century was also an important pivot point for the history of oceanic cultures. The expansion of Polynesia, which had begun as early as the ninth century, came to a sudden end in the 14th century. There was no Black Death or Mongol horde in Polynesia. ... These global events tell us that the etiology was not specific to a single culture, or to a particular agent such as the Black death. They must have developed from a larger cause that affected virtually every part of the inhabited world." The Great Wave, Price Revolutions and the Rhythm of History, David Hackett Fischer. Oxford University Press, NY, NY, 1996. p. 266, 267.

Polynesia at that time had no trade or other contact with the rest of the world, but suffered through the same great wave of inflation. Some scientists think this may be explained by a period of cooling. It remains a bit spooky.

    Fascinating!

Something astonishing seems to have been happening pretty much all over the world since December of 2012.....
    in my opinion anyway.

To my thinking... this is a revolution in the way that we approach life that is significantly being inspired by our taking
some type of spirituality more seriously....... plus....... those who are part of a religion are becoming less dogmatic.......
and more understanding of others with a different type of spirituality..........

I believe that NDE accounts are playing a significant role in this because the majority of us regard these people
    as relatively credible witnesses.

    http://www.near-death.com/reincarnation/experiences/mellen-thomas-benedict.html#a09

Of course as more people become interested in spirituality......
a minority become more willing to kill..... and torture people who
    disagree with their view.

Can you explain why it is set up that way? One of the Fed's "missions" is to help ensure full employment.

It is why we have an Income Tax.

Theology is not my beat, but I did find Dante's description of one of his visions of God as a mathematical point of light that contained the entire universe and space and time very interesting - especially coming from a 14th century intellect as opposed to a Hawking or an Einstein.

He goes on to say that none of his given insights into the true nature of God were susceptible to translation or could even be recovered intact from memory. They were beyond his human comprehension, and he admitted that his descriptions were inadequate. Humility always enhances credibility. ;-)

Canada On Verge Of Having A Gender Neutral ‘O Canada’ Anthem

Some Canadian senators are urgently trying to stop Canada from having a “gender neutral” national anthem that they say will sound “clunky, leaden and pedestrian.”

If not blocked or amended, a bill winding its way through the Canadian Parliament will render “O Canada” into a statement of political correctness. The bill has already passed through the elected House of Commons, where it was introduced by now-deceased Liberal Member of Parliament Mauril Bélanger.

Even Liberal Senator Joan Fraser, who calls herself an “ardent feminist,” is opposed to the new phrasing that she says reflects poor grammar and is a silly effort to force “today’s values” on a song that was written in a different era.

“It’s a fine example of what happens when you let politicians meddle,” she said of Bill C-210, the National Anthem Act. “Politicians are not usually poets.”

The Liberal MP who sponsored the bill died last summer from Lou Gehrig’s Disease. His changes include excising the phrase “all thy sons command” and replacing it with “all of us command.”

The Liberal government and third-party New Democrat opposition supported the bill while the official opposition Conservatives largely opposed it.

Now, one year later, the bill has succeeded in reaching a third reading in the Senate and will receive royal assent if approved there and become law.

The Senate has enough legislative mechanisms at its disposal to keep the bill in limbo indefinitely if opposition warrants.

Those supporting the “non-sexist” national anthem want to see the the changes approved before July 1 this year, when Canada celebrates the 150th anniversary of confederation — the date that the country achieved its virtual independence from Great Britain.

Conservative Senator Michael MacDonald calls the legislation “sloppy” and not worthy of being passed into law.

“If we are constantly revising everything because it was written in another generation, our national symbols will have no value. Our history means nothing in this country anymore, and it’s a shame that we’re doing this,” he told CBC News. “The Senate should not be reticent in defending and preserving the heritage of Canada.”

Fraser agrees. She’s a former journalist and editor and says it is just as inappropriate to begin amending an historical song as it would be to rewrite history.

“If we are to become engrossed in the idea that we must at all times be correctly modern, we lose a part of our heritage,” Fraser said in a Senate speech.

“It may not be a perfect heritage — I’m not suggesting it is — but it is ours. I suggest that it deserves respect and acceptance for what it is: imperfect but our own.”

    Wow!

It sure seems as if Dante probably had something like an out of body experience or near death experience.

Apparently though there are several other types of spiritual experiences that resemble OOBE or NDE that are significantly different......
but you are correct..... what Dante wrote is pretty amazing!
