    You made me laugh.

"President Vladimir Putin has ordered free land handouts in Russia’s Far East to be provided with minimal infrastructure. On Monday, he signed a law offering land plots of 1 hectare (2.5 acres) to Russians and naturalized citizens for free."

2.5 acres in taiga, far from cities and roads ("minimal infrastructure'). In other words - useless.
May be it is some scheme for his cronies? To help them to grab a land where some oil will be found? Do not see any other explanation.

We do know that the most kleptocratic countries in Europe are Ukraine and, yes, Russia.

Cutting off that pipeline means cutting off supply to Europe.

Unless they intend to cut off just a section but I don't think they can.

    1. The most startling fact for me is how well Russian people are withstanding being cut off from their normal long-standing markets and trading partners in Europe––and how they are faring since their ruble lost about half of its value in the past year. They were concerned about how long this period might last, but none registered serious fear or diffuse apprehension. Unlike us, Russians have gone through so much worse in their past. This is apparently rather small by comparison.

It's a known fact that Russia is starting a homestead act in Siberia. Hey they have a lot of land that no one is using. A certain amount of hectaires will be given to anyone who applies providing they are naturalized Russian citizens, and that they utilize the land within five years. Other than the Russians, I read that quite a few British are interesting as well. I believe they need about 300 applicants for an area to put in infrastructure...otherwise they are going to have to fend for themselves.

You forget it was the homestead acts that developed America...and there was no infrastructure then. There are adventurist people in this world and Siberia is very cold. Anyway a lot of Russians are interested, and also British. Considering Russia's size, it would take at least one billion people, not the 140 million it has in order to develop it. But they will try to put in infrastructure for every three hundred homesteads. The only thing required, is that the land is utilized within five years. It doesn't matter how they use it, only that it is used.

As for graft and an underground economy, it's common almost everywhere...but Putin has been clamping down because it cuts into Russia's revenue. As for the large wage owners in the government, well they are the Atlantacists under Medvedev and Putin is under pressure by the Generals and the nationalists to get rid of them, because they feel they are a fifth column and are working against Russia's interests.

Vladimir Putin will be visiting Mount Athos to celebrate the 1,000 anniversary of the Russian presence there, and he will stop in Athens this Friday to speak to Tsipras about some exchanges between Greece and Russia such as tourism, Russian language in Greek schools, investments, etc.

What you read about a spat was probably picked up from one of the Western propaganda networks. You have to understand, there is no way Greece, Italy or any of the countries will feel secure with anything going through Turkey. Also the amount of gas required cannot be supplied by Azerbajian. It just doesn't have it. What Vladimir Putin said according to Tass the Russian news service, sounds like he's trying to reassure them that he will continue to do everything he can to get gas to them directly from Russia no matter what obstacles Brussels imposes to please the US and the Baltic nations.

MOSCOW, May 26. /TASS/. The issue of southern routes for delivery of energy resources from Russia to the EU remains on the agenda, Russian President Vladimir Putin said in an article published by the Greek daily Kathimerini ahead of his visit to Athens.

"Beginning with 2006, Gazprom has been actively promoting the South Stream [gas pipeline] project but its implementation became impossible because of a prohibitive position taken by the European Commission," he wrote. "Although we had to curtail the project, the issue of southern routes for deliveries of our energy resources to the EU member-states remains on the agenda."

"Russia gives consistent support to the diversification of the routes by which energy resources are transported as this will raise the reliability of supplies and consequently will boost Europe's energy security as a whole," Putin said.

On the whole, he described cooperation with Athens in the energy sector as an important element of the multi dimensional Russian-Greek relations.

Why the steady propaganda against Turkey?

Sounds to me like some demented notion that Russia can be successful unless everyone else fails.

No. No sane person will try to "develop" 2.5 acre of land in Eastern Siberia without infrastructure. It's just land for grabs for his cronies when oil/gold/whatever else is discovered.

Margot a bit of news that hasn't circulated yet, but just to let you know what's going on with Turkey, during Orthodox holy week the people on Lesbos, Oenoussis and Chios were panicking over Turkeys movements, since they knew it was traditional with them to invade on Holy days...and especially Easter. The people's fears were well founded, and when the Greek military realized that their plans were to surround and take Oenoussis, they reinforced the island with troops... and therefore avoided a war.

Oh for heaven's sake, do you have any idea of the gold mines, the coal mines, the diamond mines, the oil and gas that is in Russia? What they don't have is people, and that's what Russia needs so Siberia can be developed. Anyway the Russian people all have land anyway. Vladimir Putin made it a point when he became president that every Russia would have their dacha...and most of the Russians grow their own vegetables in the summer.

They have to develop Siberia, that's why they are giving land away. The only provision is that the land must be used within five years. It doesn't matter how they use it, they can farm it, build a home or even a hotel, but it must be used or else it will be taken away.

Alien Traveller - To be honest I'm kind of surprised that it's such a small piece of land, but maybe they're trying to create communities and install some infrastructure like a road and electricity. I mean Siberia is so enormous, but the climate is getting warmer and people have shown an interest...even the British.

It's traditional with Russians to have summer dacha's and most prefer growing vegetables than mowing lawns. I don't know how they can go back and forth since everyone works except the elderly who take care of the children. Maybe the elderly take care of it, and the others go on the weekend the way they do here and in Europe. I know in Greece the apartments in Athens is usually looked on as a temporary residence, while their real home is where their peers are, and that's the villages or islands their parents came from. They are too far though to go every weekend, so unless they can afford a summer beach home nearby, they go during the long summer holidays in August or at Easter.

Margot this is the latest from Greece:

Hellenic Petroleum (HEP) will sign an agreement with Rosneft, Russia's biggest petroleum company, for the supply of crude oil and petroleum products, Russian presidential aide Yuri Yusakov said Thursday to reporters, as reported in Reuters.

The agreement will be signed during the visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin in Greece Friday, Yusakof said. No further details were given.

You're thinking of summer homes as they are in the US. The Russians live in city apartments and they love the country life they were raised in. I'm sure most of the dachas are very simple, and I read that sixty percent of their food comes from there.

You forget I have spent a lot of time in Russia and the former Soviet Union.

The number of Russian's that own a dacha is a very small percentage of the Russian population.

Unless I'm mistaken, in 2004 Vladimir Putin gave a piece of land to every Russian citizen so they could have a dacha. It's a smart move because anything that makes people more self sufficient and less dependent on others for their survival has to be smart. Also the Soviets emphasized the outdoors a lot ...or so I read.

Putin would give land to ANYONE who is willing to go and actually BUILD ON IT!!!

    Russia is massive in area.

    And Russia is vastly underpopulated.

Only 145 Million Russian's living in a country several times larger than the United States that has a population of 320 Million.

The vast majority of Average Russian's do NOT own a Dacha.

You are right. The country is enormous and it is very underpopulated, but a dacha can be a simple hut. I remember reading that there could be up to three fires burning at once in Moscow, and that the homes were like prefabs. They could be bought and rebuilt immediately. This is probably why they were able to set their homes on fire when Napoleon was approaching.

The houses were set on fire by the Russian army to deny Napoleon and his army shelter.
A tactic used in the civil war, the Boer war and even as recently as the 1960's.
