Erdogan is a megalomaniac on the order of Hitler, so if he retakes control, which he probably will, then there is going to be hell to pay all around. Right now according to Hurriyet he has called on all the citizens to resist the coup.

There is a civil war going on in Turkey in the East with the Kurds. In addition, there are Turkish officers fighting with Al Nusra in Aleppo, and they are being bombed non stop by Russia. Erdogan has to give his followers something to maintain power and I fear for the Aegean.

There is a lot on Sputnik, so much that I can't keep up. Seems people are going out into the streets, helicopters are firing on the TV station, etc.

It is not unusual. The Turkish Military has always been the guarantor of secular government when some politician tries to grow his power too grandly or the Islamic factions try to seize power.

According to Sputnik, there are firefights going on in Ankara now, but no one know between who, and there are tanks roaming through Istanbul, but under whose control? Also helicopters are firing on the TV station that made the announcement that they have taken over.

So do I.....Not unlike Obama. Erdogan has been firing his professional military and replacing them with his own hack political yes men.

    Here's some facts from inside:

    1) There are many misinformation going on in Turkey. I haven't seen this kind of chaos in my entire life. It's like hollywood movie.
    2) It's definetely NOT clear that the coup is succesful or not at the moment.
    3) The council who is responsible for this military action consists only of the Gendarme and the Turkish air forces.
    4) The First army who are responsible for the protection of Istanbul (They are also Turkish NATO army) says that they refused this military attempt and they are trying to take control of Istanbul again.
    5) The Turkish TVs say that the US and the EU and NATO don't support this military action.

We will see if it's a theatre that Erdogan is directing or not.

Why would Russia be involved? They never intervene in the internal affairs of other nations. Gulen of the Gulen movement lives in Pennsylvania and has connections with Washington. He is the one Erdogan blames. His schools have given him quite a bit of a following in Turkey. ..especially with his former students.

Erdogan has been attacking his followers for the past three years, so even if Gulen wasn't a threat before, Erdogan has made him one now with his actions.

I read that the Greek army is on high alert because of what's going on in Turkey. The reports last week were that the Generals Erdogan arrested wanted to start a war with Greece so they could overthrow Erdogan in the upheaval.

Russia is involved for the security of its' Black Sea fleet and free access to the Mediterranean.

Moi :oldman: sez this smells of :flagus: involvement ala Mubarak then Morsi. Sometimes coups just don't go right. To Sisi :roflol:

    PM interest.
I am offering even odds that Erdogan is gone. (Because that is how :flagus: wants it!)

I don't agree! Erdogan like the megalomaniac in Germany can't be rid of so easily. My bet is that Erdogan stays.

I just saw a video on RT showing people in the streets trying to stop the tanks. There are reports of explosions in Ankara and fighting in the streets. Also a report of a military jet striking down the helicopter that was firing on the TV station that they had taken over.

I predict that this is the beginning of the end for Turkey unless they do something rash. ..like a false flag attack so they can grab some islands in the Aegean. (There's a lot of activity going on there). It's the only way they could pull Turkey together again. They have to give the people some sense of triumph, since Assad now is taking back Aleppo... not to mention the lands they were hoping to grab in Syria.

Then there is the civil war with the Kurds. They might lose part of their country, not to mention the soldiers that are being killed in the East everyday. Turkey also has the terrorists attacks, and the economic situation is not too great either.

I'm telling you Turkey is a goner. The only thing that could save it is to make a move in the Aegean, and if they do Russia won't tolerate having its accesses to the Mediterranean controlled by Turkey.

    Yes,
I have now seen the same reports.
Some people are antagonistic to the military,
    others are waving support.
It is less clear now than it was a few hours ago.

To bring everyone up to date, the coup failed and 42 people have been killed because of it. The head of the coup was an officer who was fired because of his close connections with the Gulen movement.

Erdogan and many of his followers feel he has a 'messianic' purpose in his life and that he will be the one who will restore the Ottoman Empire and spread Islam throughout the world. If Erdogan felt he was indestructible before, then this coup has reaffirmed it even more so.

It's going to be hard for anyone to contain him from now on, so I fear the worse.

Yeah he didn't fly to Ankara did he? His plane flew over Cilgli Air Base in Izmir but he didn't land there either. Both Izmir and Ankara have a pretty heavy military presence, not so much Istanbul.

According to Moon of Alabama the plot was amateurish, so many suspect it was an Erdogan plot to seize more power. He will now be able to crack down on anyone he politically or personally dislikes regardless of whether they were involved in the plot. Everyone spoke out against it even the Gulen movement and the Kurdish party, but nothing will save them now from Erdogan and his supporters wrath.

Here are some tidbits from tweets on the Moon site:

Pres Erdoğan says this is an opportunity presented by God to clean up Turkish Military .

Number of detained military personnel after coup attempt rises to 1,563 across country: official

Power to Turkey's Incirlik Air Base, which is used by U.S. to launch airstrikes against #ISIS, has been cut, U.S. consulate in #Turkey says

Turkey jets which bombed #Ankara refilled from fuel tankers took off from Incirlik airbase!!

Erdogan demands that U.S. delivers Gülen to him (without evidence of coup relations). Erdogan isolates major U.S. base (with nukes) in Turkey.

10 State Council, top court members are detained allegedly for having ties to failed coup attempt.

John Kerry on the Turkey coup: "I must say it does not appear to be a very brilliantly planned or executed event."

Speculations flowing in Istanbul TurkeyCoup linked to annual military meeting in Aug where gov plans to purge Gulenist soldiers (leaked)

Imposing Sharia punishment on soldiers for their failed coup
