This feels right to me. I watched the Harvey Milk movie a few years ago but I didnt realize that Milk was a former US navy diver. I think it is great that the US navy has decided to honour Milk in this way and hopefully this will encourage more Americans from the GLBTQ community to join the US navy.

What do you think about the US navy honouring US gay icon Harvey Milk in this way? Do you agree that this is good?

I'm good with it. He was a gamechanger and then murdered.

Nothing more shows American military and Navy pride to the world and our sailors than naming a ship after a trivial and failed gay pedophile quitter who accomplished nothing in military, governmental, professional or private life.

OR it could have been christened "Superiority Of Men" - since the first openly-gay election official in the USA was an openly lesbian women, but within the gay men community they share the same attitude towards women that Sharia law does - women are lowly animals and only men have souls. The Obama Navy agrees.

Well we got the Warrior Princess, Navy SEAL turned lady after he whacked off his insignificant part. Then we tried to build up another SEAL to hero status only to learn that he was a pathological liar that over-stated his record; he lied about kicking a fellow SEAL in a bar, etc. Now we want to name a ship after a guy whose biggest claim to fame is that he likes baloney ponies in his face.

The Navy is really hurting for heroes. In all of their military exploits (including taking out Osama bin Laden) you'd think they could name a ship after someone that actually did something other than an unnatural sex act. Milk was well within his rights to pursue his happiness, but to honor it????????

It's liberal social engineering of the U.S. Navy attacking the Navy's traditions, customs, regulations and rewriting it's history in the name of PC diversity.

The Obama administration changed the definition of what an explorer was. Under political correctness a homosexual activist or a community or union organizers are now an explorer or a pioneer.

Before 2009 the U.S. military wasn't politicalized as Obama has done.

Before 2009 U.S. Navy oilers (T-A0) and cargo ships (T-AKE) were named after famous explorers and pioneers. like the Lewis and Clark class T-AKE, Lewis and Clark were explorers not PC activist.

Examples of Obama politicizing the Navy in the name of PC diversitsity.

During his tenure as Obama's Secretary of the Navy, Mabus has named ships after other civil and workers rights icons, including the Lewis and Clark-class dry cargo ships USNS Medgar Evers (T-AKE-13) and USNS Cesar Chavez (T-AKE-14)

USS Gabrielle Giffords—While noting that Congresswoman Giffords recovery from injuries suffered during a 2011 shooting was admirable, critics believed she had done little in support of the Navy during her short tenure to merit the namesake Independence-class littoral combat ship announced in 2012. It was argued that it would have been more suitable to name the vessel for any of the thousands of Marines and sailors who died defending the country.

USNS Cesar Chavez (T-AKE 124) —Cesar Chavez was a dedicated champion of civil rights who strove to improve labor conditions, but many observers thought the 2011 decision to name a Lewis and Clark-class cargo ship after him was misguided. In addition to describing his service in the Navy as “the two worst years of my life,” Chavez believed strongly in nonviolence and probably would not have wanted his name on a warship.

USNS Medgar Evers (T-AKE-13) Critics accused the President Barack Obama’s administration of ignoring Navy tradition and blatantly politicizing ship names by honoring slain civil rights leader Medgar Evers with a dry cargo vessel. Although the critics said that political activists had never before been given namesake ships.

The accusation that Milk was a "pedophile" is stated frequently and it is repeated here by another poster. To a large extent, I think its an unfair accusation and it seeks to perpetuate the false equivalency that anti-LGBT people historically like to draw between homosexuality and child molestation. Of course, having consenting relationships with members of the same sex does NOT make one a pedophile in any sense. But "CONSENT" is of course key here. Depending on the laws in your country or state, a person might not be legally capable of consent until the age of 18.

The Harvey Milk biography "The Mayor of Castro Street" describes his relationship with a 16 year old boy named McKinley. Milk was 33 years old at the time. It clearly describes this young man as Milk's "lover" saying, "sixteen-year-old old McKinley was looking for some kind of father figure…within a few weeks, McKinley moved into Harvey Milk’s Upper West Side apartment". The biography is not an anti-Milk book, nor is it written by an anti-LGBT activist. On the contrary, it describes many positive achievements that Milk made in public/professional life. But the fact is that he was having sex with young men below the age of consent.

If a heterosexual politician was having sex with 16 year old girls at age 33 (as some politicians have) then would we really want to remember them as a hero? Would such underage relationships forever brand them as a "rapist" in the legal sense, even if these teens WANTED to have sex with the politician themselves? Its an important question to ask - and you can ask this question without being anti-LGBT.

No. Seems political, rather than being based on merit.

What "gay men community" would that be? The one that only exists inside the imagination of JakeJ?

I'm a gay man. I've had more close female friends (including lesbians) than male friends, gay or straight.

The idea that gay men think women are "lowly animals" and that "only men have souls" is a bunch of malarkey. The myth that gay men and lesbians all hate each other is just that - a myth.

The Obama administration didn't name the ship after Harvey Milk because he was a Navy diver or because he was gay but Milk was being honored for being a pedophile.

Pedophiles should never associate with anyone who eats Twinkies.

This is seriously the thread you want to condemn Harvey Milk in? A year old post?

    CREATE A NEW ONE.

    Cowardice.

But here you go: Harvey Milk was a pederast and a child molester. Any Adult that molests anyone ought to be universally condemned and absolutely NOT celebrated.

Sure, it "feels good" to you because you watched a movie. The fact that Milk was a pedophile and accomplished nothing of any significance doesn't count because you watched a movie.

If I had my way any military installation, roads, bldgs, equipment, hardware, vessels, aircraft, ordinance would be named after a Soldier, Sailor, Marine or Airman that lost his or her life during battle or received the MOH.

No political hacks from any side could or would carry this honor. They are not worthy.

    Strictly a dead pool honor.

Obama's PC Navy named a ship after the late homosexual rights icon and San Francisco politician Harvey Milk, according to a Congressional notification obtained by USNI News.

The July 14, 2016 notification, signed by the worse Secretary of the Navy in the U.S.Navy's history, Ray Mabus, indicated he intended to name a planned Military Sealift Command fleet oiler USNS Harvey Milk (T-AO-206).

Harvey Milk was the first homosexual activist elected to public office in the United States and was assassinated in 1978. It had something to do with eating Twinkies not to be confused with twinks that Harvey Milk had an infatuation of sodomizing.

That record plus the fact that Milk, who bragged about being a pedophile, served in the Navy at a time it was illegal for homosexuals to do so, apparently justifies naming a Navy ship in his honor.

Harvey Milk was a sexual predator who preyed upon teen boys. According to "The Mayor of Castro Street," Milk's very favorable biography by Randy Shilts, in 1963, when Milk was 33, he took in "Jack" Galen McKinley, a 16-year-old runaway twink in New York City "who was looking for some kind of father figure," to live with him as a lover.

While Jack was still a minor, Milk moved him to San Francisco. However, when Jack matured beyond Milk's taste for young guys, Milk dumpped him.

Jack McKinney was highly disturbed and frequently suicidal after being sodomized by Milk. "The Mayor of Castro Street" records Milk’s shocking coldness when told of his former boy lover's suicide threat. "Tell him not to make a mess," Milk said. Eventually Jack died in a fall from the eighth floor of a building, in an apparent suicide.

My thoughts are these. For every Harvey, there are too many Coreys. (Feldman, Haim). Given the Obama era decision to honor Milk, how is this any different than someone suggesting that Judge Roy Moore be honored in the same way? I haven't seen anyone who denigrates Moore suggest that Milk is somehow more deserving given the same behavior. Seems like a Ship for one, but the gulag for the other. All based on which Identity political polemic you subscribe to.

Pedophiles have been proudly accepted members of 'Gay Rights' activist gangs since their inceptions, the ILGA in 1977 and others even earlier. Pedophilia is extremely common among male homosexuals; I'm not conflating pedophilia and pederasty, and yes I know the difference. Anybody who runs around supporting the 'Gay Rights' hoax is also supporting pedophilia, by direct extension.

Medgar Evers was a life long Republican, and his family still is last I heard anything from one of them; his brother was interviewed some months ago and is still a Republican, and supported Trump.

I do, however, oppose naming ships after politicians, and that includes Reagan or any other politician that never saw combat, or even a bar fight.

U.S. Navy tradition has been to name U.S. Navy dry cargo ships after famous explorers like Lewis and Clark.

Obama being an Alinkyite and practicing cultural-marxism where you rewrite history (revisionism) and change the meaning and definitions of words the Obama White House changed the definition of explores to further a radical PC political agenda.

The Obama White House decided that Medgar Evers, Cesar Chavez who hated the U.S. Navy were explores.

I oppose it. It was basic laziness that made most people outside of Northern California want to 'milk' his memory ( sick pun intended) for a gay icon. The real problem here is that Milk is the only 'pioneer' of the gay rights movement that is a household name, when in fact we have a ton of better options who weren't quite as obvious as Milk was, and did not die from violence at a relatively young age. You just have to look for them and learn what they accomplished. They don't have this 16 year old sitting in their background and they shouldn't. As for the navy, they can wait for better representative than this.

Not interested in my tax dollars going here. Let San Francisco figure out what to do with everything they already named after him.

Mathew Sheppard is probably more 'famous'; he has a juvenile arrest record at age 16 involving two 8 year old boys, which is why his parents didn't seek the death penalty for his fellow drug dealer homosexual group sex buddies; in a death penalty case, his juvenile record and the circumstances around the arrests would have been unsealed by the defense attorneys and made public.
