All new sales would be covered by the bill by then. A few corroded weapons might be left though

How can a militia be said to be well regulated that is untrained. The founders knew that the militia may even need to fight a tyrannical government....they did...so it is not up to congress to train them ....they should ensure they are always trained to fight for the republic.

50 year old firearms are perfectly functional today, and it's not unreasonable to expect a behavior change in gun owners to take better care of their current unregistered firearms. There might be 250 million unregistered firearms left. Advances in 3D printing can't be ignored, nor can the vast number of small machine shops. Repair and replacement parts will still be readily available. Registration also does nothing to stop straw purchases or theft. Heck, a registration law can't even be used to arrest and prosecute felons now.

So in your militia scenario, we'd be training over 100 million adults to handle all types of military firearms and to act in military units utilizing military tactics. I'm sure the liberals will sign up for that.

well one thing is for sure, imposing all the gun control laws you seem to be a fan of will certainly guarantee that the chances of that man not being competent is much much higher

You are not required to sign up. Only if you want to be a rifleman. The rest can dig latrines

Oh, that's right, you're developing your own world with your ideals, ignoring reality. This isn't Minecraft, but carry on.

Even if everything goes Hilary's way, she will be fixed on many other battles, AWB, UBCs, mag capacity limit, etc....etc...... Your militia scheme would be a distant priority. Legislative proposals still have to go through congress, and that takes time.

you really are making stuff up. the stuff you support-assault weapon bans, magazine limits, registration etc guarantee less people will know how to use rifles when needed.

Never mentioned assault weapons ban or magazine limits and have never supported them. Don't know where you get your stuff from

Do you think that the people that make laws will support mandatory armed militia men training?
Dems want UBCs, AWB, and things that discourage gun ownership.
You really think you can "form a new law"?

Neither side of the aisle would go for a federally mandated training program for all 150,000 legal gun owners.

Why anyone fights against mandatory training is beyond me. In the military and Leo you have to qualify with every weapon

Our culture doesn't view their civilian friends and family as military or militia men. No one will support mandatory firearm training as a requirement to own a firearm.

They can change their view. Mandatory training only helps.....it does not hurt. Even you admit everyone should train

You mean 115 million adults between 18 and 45 who are part of the militia under 10 USC 311. You don't have to be a gun owner, or want to be one, to be part of that militia.

Many who are in the military now get almost no firearms training. Lots of jobs in the militia but if you want to be a rifleman you need to be trained for it

Not everyone gets to pick their job. The military contracts out a large portion of the support roles these days - if we're going to have mandatory militia training, they need to be trained to fight - you know, that whole security of the free state thing.

You can hope that someday people will change, probably not in our lifetime though.
As dems become a larger demographic, it will be harder to pass. They want to discourage firearm ownership. They are against gun education in schools. They want to demonize guns. It's not politically correct to own firearms anymore.

I believe in gun training, I disagree with the government meddling in honest folks lives. Training should not be mandated, even though it would make me money, IF I knew how to teach militia well regulation.

    I meant 150 million.

Will the militia also train in the use of shotguns for hunting and handguns for self defense in the home? Those aren't typical skills used by a militia in the defense of the state.
