In Lakewood the police are forced to do simple tasks for orthodox jews, like run errands, turn off light switches and air conditioners, change batteries in their hearing aids, etc.

    http://www.nj.com/ocean/index.ssf/2...for_orthodox_jews_on_sabbath_report_says.html

What do you think about this, folks? Is this what police officers should be doing?

As always, all opinions are welcome.

If you are in a cooky religion such as this, then you can't have lights or hearing aids, etc. This is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard. Though if it keeps them busy and away from arresting low level drug offenders and such, the fine. In principle it's insane.

No it's not. I thought your post was a joke when I first read it but sadly it seems to be true. It's an outrageous waste of time for the officers and a misuse of taxpayer funded resources.

If you read the comments below the article this has caused quite a stir. NJ.com is responding to some of the comments with clarifications from the police department.

    my opinion?

this is just one more in a obsessive trend of anti-Jew threads.

Well, you're entitled to your opinion, but how about discussing the thread's topic? Do you think that this is what police officers should be doing?

    the OP is 100% false.

there is no evidence that any police are being "forced" to do favors for their Orthodox Jewish community.

we can also assume that most of these favors, are for elderly people.

These police officers are being ordered to do simple tasks for jews, like run errands, turn off light switches and air conditioners and change batteries in their hearing aids. Now, how do you think they feel about that? Do you think that this is what they signed up for when they joined the force? Seriously?

I'm confident that the Jewishness of these almost certainly elderly and/or frail people is irrelevant to these officers. There'll be some who don't want to do it ... but my guess is that they'd be just as resistant were they asked to help elderly Catholics at Easter. Most will see it for what it is, helping old people do their thing.

    ordered???

    ordered??

    says who???????

where does the article say they are being "ordered" to do these things?

you just made that up, so as to make it look like "Jews" are controlling the police.

That's the only reason that such a local issue would be on a forum like this.

You seem to have serious issues with Jews. You may want to get out more. Visit Israel, perhaps. Embrace a shared history, all that.

I'm not an advocate for the censoring of speech, so I encourage you to keep voicing your dissatisfactions as you see fit, but for your own sake, it might be an idea to expose yourself to the real deal, perhaps more than you have done.

He's either had ALOT of exposure to Jews, or nowhere near enough. People don't get that way via the middle ground.

If you read the article and links to other articles, this is part of an outreach program that encompasses all the diverse groups that make up that community

Police Officers do NOT perform duties of a Religious nature or assist People that are observant and prohibited from certain types of activities, performing those activities as part of their official Police duties as this would constitute a conflict of interest.

Needless to say, people have complained about this:

    http://www.tabletmag.com/scroll/187122/lakewood-cops-lend-a-hand-during-shabbat

Do the police offer this service to non-jews as well? Do they turn off light switches and air conditioners for Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, Italians, Mexicans etc? If the answer is no, then it's obvious that the police give preferential treatment to one segment of the population (i.e. jews).

A quote from the jewish Tabletmag article in my previous post:

So the police chief "encourages" officers to run errands for jews. You know what that means...

I doubt the police run errands, turn off light switches and air conditioners and change batteries in hearing aids for all these other people.

and of course you refuse to even try to find out.

cause if you DO discover that police somewhere do favors for non-Jewish elderly people, it will destroy the argument for this bigoted thread.
