Many inside the party now face the future with dread, knowing that their party has just elected a man president of the United States who has no interest in small government conservatism and whose candidacy demonstrated no interest in constitutional restrictions on executive power.

My take: The GOP is dead as a door knob. All this talk about conservatism if nonsense and it always was. Now the GOP can't hide behind their rhetoric anymore. They are big statists politicians and everyone knows it.

He has no real firm beliefs. He will delegate to the establishment republican he's surrounded himself with.

I've wondered what would be worse for the GOP, a win or a loss. Truth is I think the win is better for the party in name; the GOP is not dead, but conservatism is. It's possible that conservatism will arise in another party, but the GOP is no longer a conservative party. It's a party of the white working class and white nationalism. The real shocker will come when Republicans in congress discover how difficult it is to work with a president from their own party.

What we should be asking is this: will the Republicans in Congress adopt the new nationalist GOP platform? Or will they bail on the party to keep fighting for their conservative principles? I'm guessing it will be a mixed bag, but probably more of the former.

Or reborn! If Trump doesn't come through on his promise to get rid of the Mexicans and keep out the Muslims he will be a one term president.

I'm not so sure how far "your take" goes given how wrong you were about this election.

The GOP hasn't been standing for anything for too long. The Mitch McConnell's, John Boehners, John McCains, Romneys, Ryans, and other similar spineless Republican establishment personalities are responsible for the decline of the GOP. The American people voted for them to take over Congress in overwhelming numbers to stop Obama's death march, and they haven't delivered. That was what led to Donald Trump winning. They are responsible.

I'm not 100% on board with Trump's agenda but I see a lot of cleansing coming to the GOP, which is a good thing.

Reagan's big win masks deep divide in the Republican Party

Nixon's big win masks deep divide in the Republican Party

The GOP remade itself in 1968 and 1980 and is remaking itself after Trump's win last night.

The Democrats haven't remade itself since 1972 and has muted into a corrupt banana republic political party stuck in the counterculture movement during the 60's.

Libs are delirious! Trump just won the presidency and because of him both the Senate and House keep their majorities. Republicans also won 3 governorships with a possibility of 2 more and over 2/3 of state legislatures are Republican dominated. The Dems should be so dead...

Ill tell you what's really dead. Harry Reid. Barack Obama. Loretta Lynch. Hillary Clinton. Obamacare. Obama's illegal executive orders. Any chance of turning the supreme court into a liberal circus that interprets the Constitution straight from their buttholes for the next several decades.

Giving up our sovereignty to the UN is dead. Funnelling our money to it is dead. Our hostility to Israel is dead. Crippling our economy for the sake of global warming alarmism is dead. NAFTA is dead. Funding to sanctuary cities are dead. Federal UNenforcement of our border is dead

And good riddance to all of that garbage.

They won the presidency and retained both houses, plus picking up 3 or 4 governorships. Sounds like a good night to me. And like Army Soldier said - you've been wrong about everything so far. Keep up the fine work.

Democrats rounded up the Indians and put them on reservations
    Democrats supported slavery
    Democrats opposes the woman's vote
    Democrats opposed civil rights
Democrats voted the ACA and screwed up the health insurance system

Democrats haven't changed since the 1800's, they are still the party of elites and are against the average person

I disagree, the republican party was dead as they were, this could save them

if republicans view this as a go back to the same old Bush GOP, they will lose in two years

Conservatism: Any political philosophy that favors tradition (in the sense of various religious, cultural, or nationally-defined beliefs and customs) in the face of external forces for change, and is critical of proposals for radical social change.

    GOP Republicans are still:
    ...anti-abortion
    ...anti-LGBT
    ...pro-church (Christianity)
    ...pro-gun
    ...anti-climate change
    ...anti-evolution

Looks to me like conservatism is alive and well in the GOP.

Au contraire, mon frere. It's the ANSWERnik in Chief's precious legacy that is dead.

Soon there will be NOTHING left of his spectacularly failed presidency.

The GOP is like a cat with nine lives. At that very moment you think the GOP is dead it lives to fight another day. They do that by remaking themselves. With that said, I don't think any party that wins the legislative and executive branch is dead. They will just remake themselves into Trump's image. If they don't they're stupid.

    Ryan? Check.

    McConnel? Check.

    Lobbyists? Check.

    Wall Street? Check.

The status quo is just fine. The rule of law is still dead. The WALL is not happening.

Trump is a fraud and anyone could see this over the past 2 decades.

    The GOP has:

    1) the presidency
    2) the senate
    3) the house
    4) the Supreme Court
    5) the vast majority of governorships
    6) he vast majority of state legislatures

    I'd say we're doing ok.

Cutting taxes doesn't make government smaller.

Cutting things government DOES makes government smaller.

    Do YOU understand?

Also, the difference between Trump and Clinton on taxes was that the Trump plan was analyzed to result in major increases in debt and to benefit the wealthy disproportionately.

This focus on the wealthy is seen in other of his policies. His direction on health care has been analyzed to result in 20 million Americans losing health care coverage. Plus, it would cause every health care policy held by every American family to be canceled.
