First, let me state immediately, I support a strong American space program, and share your disappointment that it shrunk under Obama. However, I know enough about the American government to know that the President doesn't control the funding, Congress does. Many things Obama wanted to fund, Congress refused to work with him on. In fact, Congress seldom approved ANYTHING Obama wanted. Much of the blame for our space program decline lies with a Republican Congress that wanted to pay for NOTHING except tax breaks for billionaires.

Second, the sum you mentioned (10 trillion dollars) doesn't apply to the space program, since it has never amounted to more than a few billions, even in it's most active times. The President responsible for wasting trillions of dollars in hidden costs was George W Bush, who fought the Iraqi war under the counter, never asking for Congress to appropriate funds for it, and leaving it to accrue as deficits in the economy. Obama voted against that war as a Senator, but inherited it as President, and had to deal with it as best he could, with a defiant Republican Congress controlling the money for six of his eight years as President. It's easy to blame a President you don't like personally for anything that comes up, but the facts don't support your accusations.

Actually, we don't. With the retirement of the Space Shuttle, we lost our capability to launch manned space missions. We've been hitching rides on Russian spacecraft to and from the International Space Station since. However, the $10 trillion mentioned is totally unrelated to the space program.

So how did that happen?

Granted the Stimulus was on Obama. It cost 800 billion and is kept the country from imploding. That money went for JOBS. As bad as things got they would have been far worse without it.

Then there's the banking bailout. That was also necessary to keep the economy going. Without those two things we very likely would have had not a Great Recession but a Great DEPRESSION. It was also signed into law by George Bush

Then there's that other little Bush "gift" . That Great Recession and all those layoffs caused a nearly 3 trillion dollar loss of Revenue.!!!

And the remaining 5 trillion?

Continuations of programs already in place.

So please stop lying about this and then remember...that although 20 trillion sounds like a crazy big number...we NEVER pay off the principal on that debt. We pay ONLY the interest and let inflation eat away at the principal. That's how we dealt with the debt from WWII which as a per cent of GDP was every bit as big and scary as this

So let's stop lying about how we got here and understand where we actually ARE

 

What are you complaining about, our government shouldn't be in the space travel business in the first place and you private sector loving Republicans should be doing back flips that people like Elon Musk are going to start sending your Billionaire Masters into space for vacations.

The reality is that deregulation allowed "free market" greed to run rampant. We had to bail out the banks - but none of the crooks ever went to jail. Some of the low-life bankers, like Mnuchin, made out famously and now are back roaming the swamp of the so-called president, who is again trying to roll back regulations.
