The only way the US could "act alone against North Korea" is by military means. That means attacking a nuclear armed country. How would North Korea react? Anyone's guess, but it would be reasonable to expect
- a nuclear tipped missile aimed at US base in S Korea
- artillery bombarding Seoul

Frankly, even if Trump is not about to launch a pre-emptive strike against North Korea, his words will certainly be heard in North Korea, and his words alone might make NK think they are about to be attacked. And might themselves pre-emptively attack SK or a US base in SK / Japan.

IMHO what Trump said - the quote I identified above - is one of the most irresponsible things I can ever recall being uttered by an American president. He has moved from being comical to being scary.

Seriously? Do you think it would be a good idea for Seoul to be flattened with artillery, missiles, bombs etc? For an American military based to be hit with a nuclear weapon?

Because those are obvious retaliatory steps that a paranoid NK leadership could be expected to take.

 

North Korean nukes are a public relations campaign more than anything. They could get a direct hit on Seoul and their artillery would still kill 10 fold.

 

I don't disagree with you in terms of their size and ability to deliver them long distances. They probably cannot deliver anything even as big as Hiroshima or Nagasaki.

But using a nuclear weapon would cross a threshold; a boundary. Something that has not been done in 70 years. I am amazed that even one Trump supporter is happy for Trump to take a position that could result in the delivery of a nuclear warhead.

 

I support leaving NK alone. They are not an expansionist state.

 

My inside sources here predict that some fat kid is about to get his dick knocked into the dirt.

I am not a Democrat.

I am also not - in any way - rooting for North Korea. The problem with Trump's approach is that his thought process stops at "we need to get tough". He is not intelligent enough to consider the consequences. He is not intelligent enough to foresee how things could go wrong.

I guess you, on the other hand, love America and Americans so much that you are willing to sacrifice the lives of tens of thousands (maybe hundreds of thousands or possibly even millions) of South Koreans (civilians and military), and the lives of tens of thousands of American military personnel just so Trump can show N Korea who is boss.

 

I don't see what else Trump can do other than put NK on notice. Doing nothing isn't an option, I wouldn't think? Hopefully China will use its influence, but meanwhile, would you Dems and Trump-haters prefer that he does nothing except keep his fingers crossed that China will come up with the goods? Any answers?

No political or economic sanctions will work without China's support and help. So, what's on the table?

Invasion?
Political assassination?
Preemptive strikes?
Air and naval blockade?
