The US has ordered in a total of three aircraft carrier strike groups toward the Korean Peninsula, South Korea’s primary news outlet, Yonhap, has reported citing a source in the South Korean government. (LINK)

According to Yonhap, the CVN-76 Ronald Reagan carrier strike group and the CVN-68 Nimitz carrier strike group will enter the Sea of Japan next week. Meanwhile, the CVN-70 Carl Vinson carrier strike group will arrive South Korea’s coast at the same time (allegedly on April 25).

Yonhap’s source added that the US and South Korea are considering to launch a joint naval drills in the area. This drills will allegedly involve the US carrier strike groups.....snip~

A tomahawk cruise missile has a 1,000 lb. warhead and cost $ 1 million dollars. One Iowa class battleship 16" gun projectile weighs 2,700 lbs and cost only $500. -> http://www.navweaps.com/Weapons/WNUS_16-50_mk7.php

In just one hour an Iowa class battleship can put more tons of ordnance on target than an entire Nimitz class carrier air wing can in 24 hours.

But President Clinton decided to turn all of the Iowa class Battleships into museums.

    Exactly.
Iowa hasn't got the range of a cruise missile. If it can fire on shore targets, shore based Silkworms can sink it.

I personally think the EU is a joke, and just sucks money out of the US. Their beef with Russia shouldn't be our beef

    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"The Autumn Uprising of 1946 (hangul: 대구 10·1 사건; hanja: 大邱 10·1 事件) in Korea was a peasant uprising throughout the southern provinces of Korea against the policies of the United States Army Military Government in Korea headed by General John R. How do you sink an Iowa class battleship ?

You can't unless you break it's keel.

Iowa class battleships have a paint locker with gallons of battleship grey paint just in case it gets hit by an anti-ship missile. Your talking about 12 inches of armor plating.

Strafford Morss and Iowa Class Survivability -> http://warships1discussionboards.yu...-Iowa-Class-Survivability?page=1#.WPi9vPQrLrf

When President Reagan activated the four Iowa class BB's the Soviet Union went banana's and protested. The Soviets built the Slava class cruisers that can sink American super carriers with it's SS-N-12 supersonic 2,000 lb warhead anti ship missiles but had nothing in it's arsenal to sink an Iowa class BB.

Obsolete ??? :roflol:In 1990 all of the Air Force A-10 Warthogs were headed to the boneyard at Davis Monthan Air Force Base because some were saying the A-10 was obsolete. They were proven wrong in 1991 during the first Gulf war.

It wasn't, as I have already explained to another poster. Looks like your inability to do basic research isn't limited to the Sth Korean military. Better to remain silent & be thought a fool than open your mouth & remove all doubt.

The Iowas were armed with Tomahawk cruise missiles and Harpoon anti ship missiles.

They even had a nuke 16" round.

    FYI:
Tomahawk cruise missiles can't hit moving targets, that's why they are only used for land attack targeting stationary (static) targets.

But that might be changing in a few years. There's a new Tomahawk in the pipeline that will be able to hit moving targets which means that the Tomahawk will become an anti ship cruise missile.

Hope they enjoy the weather while doing their drills if that's what they end up doing. Regardless of whatever ends up happening, It's nice this time of year around that part of the world.

I did enough research to know that you left out something like 4000 pieces of ROK artillery, including half their 105mms, all their 155mms, and half their MLRS. Not exactly a minor oversight on your part.

Of course, you are merely trying to create a diversion away from your rather embarrassing failure to even read my post stating that you weren't the person I called a communist troll. Lazy, lazy, lazy.

don't need to sink it just a mission kill, also in the era of 300km+ range precision(w/GPS, laser guided) MLRS, 18 inch cannon is outdated. and its big and OLD, require more maintenance and cost. I would think all the admirals recommend to the president to decommission a 1940s ship know more about ships than you and I. the ship is sitting duck when compare to modern DDG in term of size, radar, missiles etc etc. tell me how its gonna protect it self from jet/sub/modern DDG 200km+ away firing a barrage of anti-ship missile. 1 hit and its mission kill.

if the iowa is equipped with latest ASEA, aegis system, plus 100+ VLS, and get rid of 18inch cannon, better speed, upgrade to digital C4SR then its worth it, but upgrading a 40s ship design cost more than just build a new one.

The main mission of an Iowas class BB was to provide naval shore fire support for U.S. Marines.

Today the U.S. Navy can't full fill that mission.

When the four Iowas were decommissioned after the Cold War, Congress passed a law that the Iowa's were suppose to be kept in a ready condition to be quickly reactivated if they were needed like today. The Iowas were to be kept in the Naval Reserve Fleet until the U.S. Navy could develop and build a replacement for the Iowa's .

President Clinton broke the law. What was Congress suppose to do ? Impeach Clinton for a second time ?

The U.S. Navy thought they had a replacement for the Iowa's, the Zumwalt class destroyer with its two 155 mm Advanced Gun Systems -> http://www.navweaps.com/Weapons/WNUS_61-62_ags.php

But the gun wasn't capable of providing the NSFS that the Marine Corps requires and after commissioning two Zumwalt destroyers the program was canceled. It gets even better, the two Zumwalt's can't even afford the the cost for the ammunition for the 155 mm gun at $800,000 per round. $200,000 less than a Tomahawk missile.

The reason why one Iowa class 16" gun round only cost $500 is because all of the 16" rounds were produced during WW ll.

The Iowa class BB debate has been debated all over the internet, at the U.S. Navy War College, the Army's War College, at the U.S. Naval Institute and the pro Iowa BB supporters always win the debate.

4,000 artillery pieces? Wow .... but OK, if you will include the towed stuff than maybe, but I have doubts about.
    Self propelled stuff is:
    1,400 x M-109 howitzers of different types
156 x 105mm multiple rocket launchers of Russian looking style put on an American M-54 5ton truck (means the Russians and so the North Korean Army has this same stuff too, but put on a 5ton Ural or GAZ truck)
    90-100 x MLRS

And aside them ?,??? x towed stuff of 105mm or 155mm howitzers!

And North Korea? Ehm ... we better let out, or what?

....and you still can't get it right. When people complain about kids today being lazy they ain't wrong. I'm sure that if you keep at it for long enough you'll get there.

fire support at the shore line is pretty much gone due to modern tech, name some modern war after 90s we need battleship? By the time the marine get to shore we already achieve total air/navy superiority. with precision weapon drop from B52/B2/B1+various jet+missile from ship there is no need to have a behemoth battle ship, the shell is inaccurate. These precision bomb can penetrate deep into enemy line or near shore. if really need fire support, then put some MLSR or some artillery on cargo ship, much cheaper than maintain a battleship. with current US military superiority there is no need to keep a WWII era ship, just waste $$.

Our other aircraft carriers look like row boats next to the Regan. I have seen it from across the channel in California, and it's size
is mind boggling. It was so big that I couldn't see it at first, since it looked like a piece of land. I wonder whether they can protect it. I hope that Trump knows what he is doing, because this will only increase tensions to another level, in my view.
