    Yay for us!

    https://wallethub.com/edu/fattest-states/16585/

“Fat” may be the new normal in America. Drawing on data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a report from JAMA Internal Medicine found that more than three quarters of American adults today are either overweight or obese. And for the first time in history, the number of obese people has surpassed that of the overweight. In the past two decades, especially, America’s weight problem has grown dramatically, inspiring a surge of new programs and products designed to promote better health and help Americans shed the extra pounds.

California is #44? I find that hard to believe.

It is rare to see someone not overweight. Could be my area code though.

    Right?
Where I live if you see someone running, exercise isn't the reason. Cops are more likely involved. The cops are chasing with their cars though, because most of them are fat too.

I laugh but it's really kind of pathetic, especially when you see little kids and teenagers who are overweight if not obese already. When I was a kid in school, fat people were rare. There were maybe a couple of fat kids and everyone else was pretty much normal size. Now, I see fat kids everywhere! I can't see some of them even making it to my age! If they do and keep going the way they are going, they are going to be huge! It's so unhealthy. There is just no reason for a kid to be fat like that.

Not only is it a health issue, it is a security issue. Imagine if we had to institute a draft? We would have to have dieting camps before we could send them to boot camp.

Well, I hope there is no draft ever again. Making people fight against their will is probably not a very good idea to begin with.

I thought for sure that Wisconsin would be number one.

I think part of the problem is that obesity is treated like a "disease" that people can't control.

It's the same here in the UK - obesity is a ticking time-bomb for our NHS, not least because of the dreadful implications where Type 2 diabetes is concerned. I've seen persons in their 40s around town (not that I go there very often, it's too depressing) getting around on 1 and often 2 elbow crutches, and stuffing street junk food into their faces; it's like they have a death wish.

There are still plenty of health conscious people here in the US, but there are a whole lot of people who just don't care apparently. It's so strange when its YOUNG women who are obese because women are supposed to CARE about how they look and present themselves. It's like people just don't care anymore. They just keep getting fatter and fatter and fatter. :disbelief:

I think it's probably got LITTLE to do with politics. Why don't you explain how politics relates to obesity?

That's pretty bad. You should go to a Walmart in America sometime. They have these motorized shopping carts that seem to be used primarily by people that are too fat to walk. Just disgustingly huge people. You'd think they would take the opportunity to burn some calories while shopping, but no. I know this sounds cruel, but the sight of them makes me a little angry.

It's when I see mothers giving their buggy-borne kids fizzies and chemical- and e-number laden snacks that makes me angry; what an adult does to their own state of health is of course their choice, but when they ignore their kids' health I look at it as one of the forms of child abuse.

The upsurge in obesity has been tracked to activity (physical education classes have in many cases been eliminated from high school curricula) and to food additives, specifically high fructose corn syrup which is found in nearly every soft drink as well as "fast foods", and hydrogenated oil, which is found in more fast foods than in other prepared, packaged foods. And school children now have soda vending machines in their schools as well as junk food snacks and McDonald's lunches.

I can't prove that the issue is political other than that politicians have so defunded schools that to make up the difference schools have made deals with soda and junk food maker to share in the profits from vending machines in schools. People need to get informed on these additives. If they understand how they work to produce obesity, they tend to oppose them more.

Poor people comprise a larger percentage of Walmart shoppers I believe. And poorer people spend less on food and drinks, so they gravitate toward cheaper products and those cheaper products more often contain high fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated oils. And poorer people tend to be less educated and so they more often don't understand the effects of these products on them. So the buy them and consume them with predictable results.

I had heard that a ban on high fructose corn syrup was to go into effect in 2017. But given the current political situation, I would fully expect any such health measure to be stopped.

I don't think money has anything to do with it. They seem to have plenty of money to spend on junk that they could be spending on fresh vegetables and meats, but they want junk.
