It would probably be more likely that the democrat states would form 4 separate countries based on the map but

    They basically are already.

Texas operates on its own little planetary basis. So does California. So does NYC. So does SF. So does Miami. So does every other place. That's why the Federal govt. is so important more than people realize. It's the only thing holding the country together. Otherwise each state and or Mega City would simply begin to manifest as its own country and the country itself would collapse into anarchy.

The only thing holding America together is the fact that the average NYC person doesn't know just how much they'd hate the average Texas person and vice versa. The second that reality changes and the California person, NYC, Texas and Miami person all realize their true distaste for one another the end is very near indeed.

You'd need a common border for that.

    Cheers

it is similar to the EU. The relative weakness of the economy of greece keeps the value of the euro (in this case dollar) for germany which allows them to prosper. If california were detached from alabama then the value of their currency would rise and they would have a hard time competing.

California is the 8th largest economy in the world. New England and Michigan are the other two economic powerhouses. The rest are all satellites of those three and could not function without them, certainly not economically just because of coastlines or the lack thereof and not even politically in any real sense. An America East and West of the Mississippi might survive, especially if Napoleon's dreams of an American Empire in Louisiana had not been dashed by Toussaint de Ouverture in Haiti but I see little real hope of the fractious America East long surviving the ACW had we been next to a huge Mexiana made more powerful by European ties and rich by Californian gold. Perhaps we'd now all be speaking French, Oui?

Canada united because we saw post Civil war America as a threat. A trans continental railway was built for faster troop transports and the country confederated. If the US states were un-united and competing with one another for territory in the American west Canada might not have united as it did.

A western nation composed of California, Oregon, Washington and British Columbia might have been a result of this alternate timeline.

Why would California, Oregon and Washington have become Independent of French Mexiana? I see its expansion north as the more likely scenario.

Though that's just your proposal isn't it?

I wonder how this would have jibed differently with the First Americans tribes.

The Democrat countries would be overpopulated with 'Judge Dredd' type cities.

Oh wait, they already are. Nevermind.

The question of California is interesting. People need to understand that while the population centers are deep blue (the greater Los Angeles area, the greater San Francisco bay area, and the border counties), the northern portion of the state tends to run more conservative, as do the counties of the central valley (the portion of the state involved in agriculture). People like Aleksander want to talk about California in monolithic terms, but nothing could be further from the truth. The state should actually be divided into four or five distinct segments, to better reflect the representation needs of the individual populations. If the blue counties in the state want to split off, do they get to drag the red counties along kicking and screaming? Again, let's be clear: the 8th largest economy in the world is NOT solid blue. Far from it.

FYI, the 2016 county map from Wikipedia serves to tell the tale...

Politely. It must be remembered that Canada was once a nation of rugged lions, and now of polite metrosexuals.

Marx will do that to you.

What if Democrat and Republican states were countries?

Then you'd have a return to tribalism; exactly what Trump and his minions want.

Where do you stop? How about we just go with popular vote to better represent the *people* instead of various sizes of *lands*. No one represents anyone but him/herself.
