PARIS — France and Germany have agreed to develop a European fighter jet to replace their existing fleets, part of a raft of measures to tighten defense and security cooperation, according to a document issued after a Franco-German cabinet meeting in Paris on Thursday.

The two countries are to come up with a roadmap for developing the new aircraft by mid 2018, the document said.

The two governments also agreed to set up a cooperation framework for the next model of the Tiger attack helicopter and for tactical air-to-ground missiles.

The document also said the two countries agreed to work together on procuring ground systems including heavy tanks and artillery, and that a contract was expected to be signed before 2019 for the German-led Eurodrone project.

The combat aircraft project buries a split which saw France withdraw from the Eurofighter project in the 1980s to produce its own Rafale warplane via Dassault Aviation.

The document stated that the new combat system, which analysts say could involve a mixture of manned and unmanned aircraft, would replace both the Eurofighter and the Rafale.

However, it did not say what if any role Britain - Europe's leading military power and a partner in the Eurofighter fighter project alongside Germany, Spain and Italy - would play in developing the new successor.

Europe currently has three fighter planes, the Eurofighter Typhoon, France's Rafale and Sweden's Gripen - whereas many defense analysts say there is room for only one combat plane in future because of budget pressures and huge development costs.

HA HA HA Fun fact, few weeks ago Germany showed interest in the american F35 and ordered the plans from the american defense ministry. Experts wondered about that, because Germany usually develops its weapons itself. Some experts said its a move to get the data.

Trump smelled a "great deal" and ordered the plans to be send to Germany.

Seriously...you dont even need spies anymore to get classified data from the US. trump sends evrything himself.

Rafale is good, but at 1 million/apparel, he is way too expensive.

    LOL,

Do two country have enough engineers and capabilities for performing of project? After Merkel's Atom-Leaving the completely German manufacturing industry is going down, most of huge engineering companies throw personal away. The best evidence for incapability of Germany is Berlin Airport where almost anything is wrong and it will never opened. If Germany will run by AFD than probably yes, but with Merkel it is impossible.

Yes, Brandenburg airport is indeed a disaster. They say it will never be opened although billions of euros were invested there.

    :)),

Huh? Enough engineers? German themselves can build state of the art aircraft. Me262 comes to mind from ww2. Where do you think usa and former SU got some of their designs from, if it wasnt from captured"nazi" engineers.:))

Now we know it's fun to bash our president but geez try something that doesn't make you foolish..
Fun fact Germany, France are our allies. France is our oldest ally, what's your point?
The "classified data" is out there with Britain, the Netherlands, Norway, Turkey and Italy already purchasing the Jet.

    By Andrea Shalal
BERLIN (Reuters) - The German Air Force this month sent the U.S. military a written request for classified data on the Lockheed Martin Corp F-35 fighter jet as it gears up to replace its current fleet of fighter jets from 2025 to 2035.

The letter, sent by the Air Force's planning command and seen by Reuters, makes clear that the German government has not yet authorized a procurement program and is not committed to any particular aircraft to replace its current warplanes.

It said the defense ministry would carry out "an in-depth evaluation of market available solutions, including the F-35, later this year," with a formal "letter of request" to be issued in coming months.

Germany's interest in the F-35 - the Pentagon's most advanced warplane and its costliest procurement program - may surprise some given that it is part of the four-nation consortium that developed the fourth-generation Eurofighter Typhoon, which continues to compete for new orders.

The Eurofighter is built by Airbus as well as Britain's BAE Systems and Leonardo of Italy.

Germany will need to replace its current fleet of fourth-generation warplanes - Tornadoes in use since 1981 and Eurofighters - between 2025 and 2035. The F-35 is considered a fifth-generation fighter given stealth capabilities that allow it to evade enemy radars.

Berlin's letter also comes amid growing tensions between the West and Russia over Moscow's support for separatists in eastern Ukraine, with NATO officials saying that Russian naval activity now exceeds levels seen even during the Cold War.

Britain, the Netherlands, Norway, Turkey and Italy - key NATO allies of Germany - are already buying the F-35 fighter jet to replace their current aircraft, and other European countries such as Switzerland, Belgium and Finland are also looking at purchasing the fifth-generation warplane.

Germany's gesture may be aimed at strengthening its hand in negotiations with its European partners over the scale and timing of development of a next generation of European fighters. Any moves to buy a U.S. built warplane could run into political resistance in Germany, which has strong labor unions.

But military sources say buying the F-35 could make sense for Germany given steady declines in the cost of the U.S. jets, and technical challenges with the Eurofighter.

    EIGHT-HOUR BRIEFING

In the letter, the Air Force said a small team of air force officers was gathering data to prepare for a detailed analysis of alternatives for a new warplane.

The group was working closely with the ministry's "Task Force Future Air Combat System," which aims to make a recommendation for a political decision in mid-2018, the letter said.

"In order to understand (the) F-35's cutting-edge technologies, the German Air Force is requesting a classified brief of the F-35's capabilities in general and especially concerning sensor suites, information management and operational capabilities," the letter said.

The letter said a video conference suggested by U.S. officials in Bonn would help speed up the process.

A source familiar with U.S. weapons programs said the classified briefing requested by Germany would likely last around eight hours.

Since Germany is not part of the international consortium that funded development of the stealthy new fighter, the request for classified information must first be approved by the U.S. government, but U.S. officials said they did not expect any problems securing the needed marketing license.

The Pentagon's F-35 program office said it had received the letter and was "working to support the German Air Force request."

Lockheed referred questions to the State Department, which oversees foreign military sales, and the Pentagon. Spokesman Michael Rein said it would be inappropriate for Lockheed to comment since any potential sales would be negotiated between the two governments.

The F-35 is in operational use by the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Air Force, which last month carried out its first operational deployment of a small number of jets to Estonia for training with other U.S. and NATO military aircraft.

The U.S. Air Force this month also announced this month that it plans to bring the F-35 to the Paris Air Show in June.

The article I read ( see above) said that Germany did request a "briefing", no data has been exchanged. The jet is for sale to our allies.

The F35 is a desaster and doesnt fullfill what Germany wants. Beside that we prefer to build our own stuff.

As usual your posts are nonsense, all german economic indicators show your ignorance.

It's not a national project but a project of the federal countries Berlin and Brandenburg and the government of the federal country Berlin is known for its constant inability. Berlin airport is a shame.

Maybe at least this plane can fly at night....Because, for example, "Tornado", as reported by Defense News, the Tornado air force planes located in Syria can not fly at night. Even the German defense minister admitted "there are some technical problems associated with the night flights of the Tornado ..."

But it is possible now, by joint efforts of the most developed EU countries, it will be possible to create an aircraft capable of flying at night. For example, the same as the plane of the Wright brothers.

By the way, when assembling a new aircraft, workers must fix the screws as befits. Otherwise ..... As the German press reports, 39 Tornado reconnaissance planes will cease flights for an indefinite period. The cause was poorly fixed screws in the cockpit.

F 35 is an insult to the engineering thought of all mankind. The standard of human idiocy. Especially given F 35 price .

Berlin Airport is not a problem or a shame. Everything can be improved. But Germany's greatest shame is the German chancellor and German politicians. Except....May be.... "alternatives for germany" or Sahra Wagenknecht

    OP

Could you please ask France and Germany if we can have (gratis hopefully, otherwise on easy payment terms!!) their redundant fighter planes please, so we'll have some to put on our 2 shiny new aircraft carriers. We've run out of money so can't afford to build our own planes. Hey, that's Gay Britannia in 2017 for you.

Honestly i dont know what to think about the UK anymore. You are ruled by fools. News say your government now admitted that they indeed have to pay 100 billion € for Brexit. Are your sure that PM May is not from a Monty Python sketch?

The Germans engineers of the 'old school' are either retired, or emigrated or pushed to early retirement.

    Who will build?
Politicians and officials like Berliner Airport?
Merkel completely destroyed German Industry by her Atom-leaving,Green Energy utopia, VAT-increasing, Fight against Mittelstand etc.
Lot of German leading companies bought by Foreigners and hacked to death.
You are dreaming, Merkel's Germany today is not Germany before her.
Even military automatic guns can not right shoot.

Than explain why all DAX companies throw people away, for example Tyssen alone 3,000 high qualified in the next two years.
The truth is Germans industry is going very bad due to crazy sanctions against Russia, losing of markets in Near East and North Africa and diverse Merkel's 'experiments'.

Now is not the 40-50 last century. It is not that easy to find a big team of highly qualified engineers in Germany now.
