    Yes and no.

Farms get subsidies when crops fail and they become uneconomic.
    Banks get bailed out.
If jobs are on the line and you can save them through intervention, why not?

Saving the miners was a reasonable enough goal until they went power mad. It wasn't solely an economic decision.
There were strong spectres of the Soviet revolution in that one. So the economics were good, but also the social element was there.

@ Ned, I am a master of myself.
But I am also a school master. And have achieved mastery of a few things in life.

I don't not seek to be your master. I wish not to be.

If I am presented with a binary choice however, rule or be ruled. I will rule.
And you won't like that rule. So best not to prevaricate.

    Live and let live.
I am no business of yours. You are no business of mine.
Better for both of us that way.

    So what sells?

Auto makers in Germany get fined for cheating emissions and probably for building in third world countries pretty soon.
What can Britain cut if farming and banking isn't paying anymore?
I'd hate to lose trading, but banks fail and get bailed out.
    Farms fail and get subsidised.
    Jobs for jobs sake.

    what sells in Britain?
    Tourism sells.
    Military tech sells.

Why don't we sell the wind, the rain?
Why don't we sell a plot of some a rocky coastline for hydroelectricity and sell electricity to the EU like Ireland or even France or the NL & Belgium etc etc..
Do the same for South End on Sea, in Essex. - Why not invest into the waters where we dare not swim or touch and start having wind power and hydro electric power plants and, building wind propelled and water propelled turbines?

Why can't Britain sell its wind and rain?

Build a massive sea wall, drain part of the North Sea...look for curvature of Earth, build turbines in this wall, wire it up, slap a British flag on it, let the sea flood back in, allow the current and the planet to generate this motion to power the turbines.
It does mean draining part of the sea though.

What about if we tried this first in the Solent?

    Mega structure submerged dams.

I like your sea wall idea. Good one.
If we could design this on a much smaller scale however. For individual use by coast huggers.

We do sell rain. Rain is owned by the water board. You pay for it.
Even if you house has no plumbing or sewerage, you still owe them for the rain that runs off your property.

We also do try and sell wind energy, but it isn't cheap, and doesn't generate enough electricity to overcome the resistance of long wires. So it needs to be local to the point of use.
There are not many places where water flows fast enough to drive a turbine. Also Hydro massacres the environment, submerges villages for example when you build a dam. And most importantly of all it's dam expensive.
The most expensive electricity generation of them all.

So Hydro isn't an option everywhere, nor is tidal, but it is also far more expensive than a gas turbine or a coal turbine.
It's even notably more expensive than nuclear and wind and solar.

So we don't sell a lot of it, because it isn't profitable or the best solution on the market today.

The US hasn't asked for Britian's help and Britain is being urged to (not sure by who) to play http://www.express.co.uk/news/world/840419/Britain-North-Korea-Kim-Jong-un-Trump-US-honest-broker
    'honest broker'...

    I'd give you honest.

Does UK launder any finance in North Korea?
Because that's how they're getting away with it.
Taking money from other countries to launder it and do this global black market service that economies depend on, and they're getting armed to the teeth for it.

So tonight's bill passed, but, is the UK united?
    Are we all doomed?
Is this the new golden age?
    What do you say?

is the UK united?... never has been
    Are we all doomed?.... no
Is this the new golden age?....no
What do you say?....no matter what curve balls are chucked at you or what earth-shaking events occur they are rapidly subsumed and forgotten by the necessity of everyday life.
