i remember from the 90's when they take that rare path irma did, they usually turn west as this did.

Which ever way she goes, the Keys are going to feel her wrath. Those islands are very fragile and have been over built; this will not be good. Most of the islands are just a couple feet above sea level.
The reporter on the weather channel is saying we are in a TS watch and he also said no one knows where the storm is going.

I did not pay too much attention to the different options for the combat engineers. The hand dug slit trench seemed like the best option for a platoon in the field. There was emphasis on preventing an enemy from gaining accurate intelligence from examining waste left behind.

Not the best way to learn but certainly the the most pain free way to learn. Will keep an eye out for Blood Diamond.

The US military was drawing water downstream from where their livestock watered for decades after the microbe/disease link was suspected. Cholera was a problem even after the Civil War. The Army mule is not an honor student.

I post this September 11th every year and will as long as I can because I will never forget!

I was deep in the woods in New York State packing up getting ready to go back home. I had no idea what was happening. I got in the truck and drove for a while and turned the radio on. At first I thought the station was playing some War of the Worlds show. I wasn't interested so I changed stations. Every station was broadcasting the same thing. What the hell was going on? We were under attack? I didn't feel fear. I felt confused and wanting to get a better understanding of what the hell was going on.
They broadcasted that all bridges and tunnels into and out of the city were closed. They were saying they feared bombs may have been planted. Seemed at that moment no one had a clue exactly what was happening or the extent but we were under attack. That was clear. At that point it was do I turn around and head back to the place in the woods or go home. It was a wicked short thought. Im going home. I don't care what's happening. They can close the bridge. Im going over it and going home to make sure my family is safe. There was not a vehicle in sight. No planes. Deserted everything. Im getting closer to the bridge that crossed the Hudson River thinking, Im crossing it. Put the windows down in case this bridge goes down. If the fall doesn't kill me, I am not drowning. Getting closer to the bridge made me feel a raw fear like never before. That raw fear was overcome with raw determination to get home. I got to the bridge and I will never forget what the flashing banner said. It said, 'God Bless America'. To this day I cant type what that banner said without water in my eyes. It had the most meaning to me and still does. I made it home. My family was safe. No so for so many people. So many family's devastated. So many suffered and still do.

God rest the souls of all that died on September 11 and there after. Give strength to all the family and friend survivors.

    Never forget!

We aren't leaving it looks like Irma isn't going to be as rough on us as everyone thought. We got a call from EM services Saturday and they said we were going to get Tropical Storm Winds and possible Hurricane force winds. Right now we are getting wind gusts of 34 miles per hour. The weather isn't too bad, yet. My husband said it isn't bad enough to leave. I am taking him at his word.
We were on the eastern side of Ivan and I never want to do that again.

Not one soul that was alive and aware of 9/11 will ever forget where or what they were doing when the World Trade center was attacked.

Thank God you guys are alright and that didn't refuel itself in the Gulf.

I was watching the news and they were saying its not the wind and rain but the storm surge that basically takes it toll on people. I was surprised but noticed the construction of places down there really is built to withstand some severe weather.
Wasn't it something to see the bays drain out?

Florida has some of the strictest building codes in the US. In the Keys you have to build to code or you don't build. If the code hasn't changed most all electrical wires have to be in conduit. Other parts of Florida are a little more lenient but not much.
I was more worried about the winds and the tornadoes that hurricanes spawn. A lot of new buildings going up are having safe rooms built in their home.
When Irma started moving on a more westerly course I was praying she didn't get into the Gulf and refuel herself.

Irma had such a way about her; she took everyone's attention what an attention whore she was and is.

My wife and I were up and getting ready for work. We were watching TV and the video feed of the one tower that had been hit when the second tower was hit. At that moment all thought of the strike on the first tower being some sort of freak accident vanished, and I knew our nation was under attack.

Our son was 16 at the time. I had no inkling at the time what a profound effect this event would have upon my family. 3 years later he joined the Marines, and 2 years after joining he would be in combat. He did tours in Iraq and Afghanistan during his 4-year hitch as a Marine. After the Marines, he got his degree and became a regular federal employee working for the military, and he has done two deployments in that capacity. On 9/11/2001, I just had no inkling.

God bless all those who were lost that day. God bless our troops. And God bless the USA. :salute: :flagus:

Yeah I kept watching the track and hoped it didn't turn west into the gulf to regain strength and then ride the coast. It looked bad enough as is.

I was reading before the hurricane hit that many of the place that were hit previously with hurricanes rebuilt up to code. Concrete and glass that can withstand hurricane force winds. It made a huge difference. Its an amazing difference when you view the devastation on some of those islands.

Between Harvey and Irma it just makes you wonder what's around the corner.
The thing about Irma was the way she moved through Florida. Thing is Florida took a beating but seems like over time their building code improvements made a huge difference. Its a striking difference.
Just stay safe Daisy till the damn thing is totally gone. Did the wildlife in the area give any indications what was on the way? I think about those old times and how they had no real warning other than the signs of nature.

I remember being kind of in shock on 9/11 and thinking, how could this be happening in my safe country? It was then that I realized we are never REALLY safe. Our freedoms and our way of life have to be protected and defended.
