"Zones" in my experience seldom stay where intended and the general taste of the forum becomes somewhat infected by those that frequent the areas leading to increased aggression in Moderator activity. These "experiments" rarely help a forum and have led to much dissent behind the scenes by those intended to maintain civility.
If members want to be nasty, grow a set and use PM.

So you favor one forum and one level of intolerant censorship? I do not, but it's not my forum. I can only vote with my virtual feet to visit one forum or another. While I understand levels of control, such as no threats of violence to other members, to ban people for saying "You're more ****ed up than a football bat" seems extreme.

BTW, IIRC, you had your own forum at one time. Is that correct? If so, relate your experiences please.

Moderation of a large community requires a delicate level of subtle control that often requires limitations be placed on members regardless of what they might desire. Banning is seldom used and usually means warnings and directive have been ineffective. The use of attack and profanity tend to indicate a participant that most forums would prefer played elsewhere.
It is important to remember that this in NOT a free country here, but a Republic based on law.

It's understood we're all moochers here since not many are paying dues or otherwise paying for opportunity to post despite the fact every forum costs money to operate. As the old saying goes "If you go to a website and there isn't an obvious product for sale, then the product is you!" :D

Forums are free to set whatever rules they like. However, if too loose, it will drive away participants and if too tight, it will do the same. Some are merely echo chambers, which limits their ability to grow. Most, like the media, thrive on controversy.

It's been quite awhile since I've posted here so I'm just renewing my understanding of how the rules are applied.

The balance here is quite good and thus the stability in membership.

Woah, someone obviously has some "unresolved issues." :D I come on this forum to discuss political issues AND to have some fun in my down time. I like to flirt, post music, be friendly, talk about other things besides politics here too sometimes. I'm sorry if you don't approve. ;)

Why? There are plenty of people posting here from each side. Would you like an echo chamber or something?

Well, we can see above a few of the reasons why it is not much fun to post here. Some people just seem to suck the fun out of everything all the time.

Best one I've ever been on, and that's quite a few over recent years. As to that - I thank the owner, the technicians, and the moderators.:hug:

It's been over a year since I posted here last. My problem here, was never its membership or their reasons for being in a public forum.....to me at least, what makes or breaks a forum is its moderation.

Moderation has always been and always will be an issue on any internet forum. Think of it as a cyber city with a very diverse population. Some folks will hate the Cops for upholding the laws and interfering with their lives of crime or dissent and others will be quite happy they are there. Mods are unpaid cops who get a bashing for doing their job and the position is trying at times leading to eventual burnout.

I own two domains/web sites, but they are on "deep web." I had the good sense of hiring two admins to run them. They are not public, (sort of for professionals) so the problem of modding them is inconsequential. However, I've been a mod at several public forums. I quit the last modding I had because a couple of the mods, including the admin, had the own private agendas which included covertly harassing members, they did not like. While I appeared to be strict, I was fair, lest ways in memberships eyes. That was unacceptable to me. My sudden and quiet departure did end up causing some major problems, or so I was told. Suffice to say, I understand that being a mod is a rather thankless duty.

I likewise quit my Mod duties at the last forum for very similar issues. I have maintained membership there and gone back twice just to see, it has gotten far worse. This is unfortunately common and tends to lead to forum decline and failure. Finding competent and worthy Moderation staff is difficult at best, so I now Mod alone in a smaller and less active forum.
The staff here seems pretty good in my opinion.

My experience is that anyone can be offensive to me, but that if I reply in kind, my posts are removed. I understand that being a mod is thankless, and if you post on a site you need to understand its biases, but it does tend rather to limit discussion, in my view.

Well said for a guy with a well groomed Neanderthal avie. j/k

What I see is an overly protective environment that gives the false impression of higher debate. The bias seems to benefit liberals, whether that is on purpose or just a byproduct I have no idea.

Internet forum interaction is a skill that can be learned, it involves an ability to articulate subtle sarcasm and judging an opponents intellectual abilities to jab in a way Moderators cannot use for infraction. Once this is understood it becomes something of a game or entertainment form.

Alas, I leaned my games on a site that believed in free speech, and I miss it.
