Chelsea Manning announced on Twitter on Monday that she has been permanently banned from entering Canada due to her past convictions of violating the Espionage Act. Manning was sentenced to 35 years in prison after pleading guilty to several charges, but her sentence was commuted by President Barack Obama after seven years.

The letter states that Manning will not be allowed into the country as her crimes, if they were committed in Canada, would carry a punishment of over 10 years in prison.

Manning tweeted that she would be challenging the ban.

Considering Canada doesn't allow people who have been convicted of drunk driving to enter the country (or at least has the right to refuse entry based on this conviction), is it really all that shocking that they're prohibiting someone who has been sentenced to 35 years in prison for spying on their own country? A DUI is far less severe than violating the Espionage Act, and Canada is a sovereign nation who can pick and choose who is allowed in. Being a celebrity does not give Manning a free pass to force countries to change their immigration policies. Actions, of course, have consequences. This is one of them.....snip~

Imagine that, the Canucks are banning Chelsea Manning from their country. I think other countries will do the same. But for now its the Canadians Topping that list.

I will have to give Canada kudos on this one.

Why is she going to bother fighting the ban? Isn't getting off easy in the US good enough?

Is this really news? Canada has long forbidden entry to convicted felons, even the DUI charge.

I knew a guy who had worked and lived in Alaska for many years, and while there did get DUI. Years later when he went to relocate to the lower 48, and had all his possessions in his truck and trailer to drive back down, was stopped and turned around at the Canadian border. Being a convicted felon he was much too dangerous to be in Canada, and they turned him around.

He returned to Alaska and shipped his truck and trailer by boat to the lower 48 and rode the airlines himself.

Manning should have done a bit of research.

treason is honestly the coolest crime. i'm not endorsing it, because that would be illegal, i'm just saying that it's a cool crime and people who commit it are cool.

American law is identical in this regard. If you have a criminal record you ain't gettin in.

She isn't getting into Canada because she wasn't pardoned, her sentence was commuted. course a us pardon means the same to cdn customs as a cdn pardon does to us customs - meaning squat.

LOL as someone who had a history of DUI convictions might be a danger to Canadians on their road systems it kind of made sense to ban such people from Canada however I do not off hand think that Chelsea Manning is going to be spying on Canada during her/his visits to that nation.

Not protesting Canadian laws just is of the opinion that banning him/her is stupid on it face.

Footnote it also go against Canadian history and tradition of giving shelter to such people as Benedict Arnold and tens of thousands of US draft dodgers for that matter.

Or ask President Trump son-in-law for that matter along with a large percent of his total appointments to date for that matter.

How ironic that Manning got convicted of espionage for exposing the U.S. for engaging in espionage. Screw the Espionage Act- it's antithetical to all of the fundamental values of liberty and democracy. The U.S. government has no good reason to keep secrets from American citizens or to deploy U.S. soldiers in clandestine operations in other countries, no matter how great the strategic advantages may be.

Everyone is above bad laws and rules.

I guess, but it seems clear, Canadian Immigration Law is vastly more strict than Trumps immigration policy

Is anyone surprised Barack Hussein Obama commuted the sentence of a traitor? When Canada has more balls than the American President Obama...you know there's a serious problem.

That's because the police enforce whatever laws our state and federal legislators pass while our legislators pass whatever laws they like. They don't follow any rational standard of ethics. A free society requires just a minimum of laws to prohibit violence, vandalism and fraud. The law itself should be limited to prohibitions, not permissions, and, if it doesn't fall under one of the three categories of crime above, there's no good reason to prohibit it.

In such a reality that may be the case. In this reality, it isn't, and I am much more interested in the Demos paying the price rather than then running around and projecting that they are above the law or rules.

If what you are saying is true, it's perfectly legal on Canada's part; they have an unfettered right to say who can and who cannot come into their country.

When the law is wrong, any price paid for break it is also wrong. There is no justice to be had; no lessons to be learned, only grudges that victims on all sides will seek revenge for. This is how the realities of great empires have fallen to give rise to the realities of new empires.
