What do you think of the states editing the US Constitution??? I heard it was up for a vote in my next local election, and I assume this is happening all across the USA???

Well I'm not sure I support this or not, but taking the Constitution to the chopping block is a big risk, I think. I'm not sure exactly what it entails but the one state one vote on provisions has me worried because of all the red states and I'm a Democrat.

I think some are talking about an Article V convention.

It won't happen, because DC won't permit it.

Hell, why not? Our shitty federal courts system has all but destroyed it with activism over the last 100 years or so.

You do know that each state has its own constitution as well, don't you?

the article 5 convention is being called by alec, a koch organization.

it is called by the state legislatures. "dc" has nothing to do with it.

delegates will be appointed by the state legislatures so expect a lot of republican delegates.

the public purpose of the convention is to enshrine a balanced budget amendment, but once the convention is convened just about anything goes. maybe an anti abortion amendment or destruction of the safety net.

i am extremely skeptical. perhaps we need more ways for more people, ideas, and parties to participate in our democracy, but this does not seem to be the agenda.

i am extremely skeptical. the delegates are appointed by state legislatures so look at the odds of anything progressive happening.

on edit: sorry about the near duplicate. i'll get used to this forum soon enough

As I see it, we need a balanced budget amendment and congressional term limits. That should be a near universal given.

The only way we will ever balance our budget is to slash federal spending. We need teeth in our 10th Amendment. Medicare, welfare, education, and many other federal functions need to be shifted to the states. The Feds are becoming too powerful for our own good. We need 50 different ways of doing things to determine which is right.

Before you label me as a conspiracy nut, look at the national debt. It's currently over $20,000,000,000,000. What happens when that house of cards collapses. Anarchy? Secession? Worldwide market collapse? Food shortages? Riots? Something needs to change before this becomes possible.

Of course the states can not afford those costs so what you are advocating is the abolition of Medicare, and curtailment of education.

    Wonderful.

By the way...the budget just passed by the GOP Congress and supported BY Trump adds significantly to that debt...but meh...

It may take 100 years, but we are doing nothing to stop it and we keep heading in that direction.

LOL. Without the votes of Democrats the new Demogressive Party ignored, President Trump wouldn't be in the White House.

LW has neither a sense of irony, nor any sarcasm radar. This is why they are losing the culture wars... and elections... so badly these days.

Legally, there isn't a damn thing DC can do about it

No,that's what Democrats, with Repubican acquiescence, have been doing for decades. The A5 Convention movement is about untrashing it.

Who the hell do you think bears those costs now, Brainiac?

Congress won't , and they will pass the legality they need to prevent it.

The author evidently doesn't want a conversation, but there is no legal way for Congress to prevent an A5 Convention if 34 states apply for it.

yguy, I do understand your argument, and theoretically I agree with it.

I also know Congress, so the Convention would never happen.

You're assuming Congress would flagrantly disregard the Constitution, then.

DC cannot stop an Article 5 Convention of the States, at least legally and constitutionally.

If you are referring to Article 5 convention, the legality they have to "pass" is an amendment to the constitution.

If you don't care about the 2nd Amendment being raped by states, cities and courts, then you shouldn't care about the rest of the US Constitution.

So if you don't even think an honest, modern day adult citizen in NYC or Chicago should at least be able to own a flintlock rifle to have in his home, or carry a flintlock or wheel-lock handgun hidden on his or her person, without this right infringed upon by laws and registrations, then don't complain about any other right being taken away.
