Angela Merkel Lectured Trump On Global Warming, Now Germany Abandoning Its Climate Goal.....

Germany will abandon its 2020 national global warming goal, a huge embarrassment to Chancellor Angela Merkel, as part of a deal to put together a coalition government in the wake of September’s elections.

Sources tell Reuters that Merkel’s would-be coalition will drop a goal of cutting carbon dioxide emissions 40 percent below 1990 levels by 2020. Ahead of the elections, Merkel said she’d find a way to meet the 2020 target. That was before she failed to put together a majority governing coalition.

But now, Merkel’s new government is abandoning its previous climate pledge. Instead, the coalition pushed back its 2020 goal until some time in the 2020s and keeps the goal of reducing emissions 55 percent by 2030.

Reuters reported that would-be coalition members agreed to cut severe taxes and fees on electricity bills to green energy deployment. Germany now has one of the most expensive electricity markets in the world, largely due to taxes.

Though, coalition members still agree to set up a commission to decide when to phase out Germany’s use of coal-fired electricity. Coal currently powers about 40 percent of Germany’s electric needs.

It’s not surprising Germany has decided to abandon its 2020 climate goal. Germany was not on track to meet its climate goal, despite spending nearly $800 billion in green energy subsidies in recent decades.

University of Colorado professor Roger Pielke, Jr. pointed out the impossible math behind Germany’s climate goals.

The implications of Germany's 2020 target of a 40% reduction were obvious years ago. Setting targets just over the future horizon is how climate policy fools everyone into business as usual. Example: Germany has kept their 55% reduction by 2030 target. That one will work, surely.

Looks like Merkel should have held up with the preaching to Trump, huh? Topping it off is the fact that Germany's target projection was an impossibility. But a Noble Climate Goal. What say ye?

 

The difficulty of adhering to the harsh economic realities of significant CO2 production are not an American problem. For internal reasons the Americans were the first to resist the calls of environmentalists, but no country will take the harrowing steps necessary to solve the problem.

Either the problem will be solved by accident or it won't be solved at all. No people, certainly not the Germans, will choose poverty.

 

It sounds good in theory, but to put unrealistic goals on it is pretty foolish and unfair to the people of the leader of the country saying so.

I think Trump was right to not tie us to the Paris Accords when it was obvious that the US had to give up far more than any other country to be a part of it. It was/is a bad deal that was very much America Heavy.

I do not however like the way Trump went about it, it could have been handled a hundred different ways and I am disappointing that someone so successful in business did not see this and was not able to try to build a different deal. After all of this:

I think she can start by teaching millions of 'new Germans' to eat pork instead of beaf, thus greatly reducing cow farts which are very harmfull for the environment. There is a noble goal.

If it really gets to this point, Germans will have a HUGE pivot and kick them out, VIOLENTLY. The past has been quite the proof of that.

Germany is doing what they think is right, but there is HUUUUUGE portion of Germany that is pretty far Right, they are gaining more and more power. They will end up rising up before anything like this happens. Sadly this will be the start of the Far Right sweep as Germany has kinda come to be seen as the Progressive's leader in all of this.

The German (and Austrian elections which shocked even me) have done more and more to show that The Left is losing in Europe, the people and the governments they run are becoming more Right wing and as they do so, the immigrant problem will likely reach a much more "German Centric" conclusion.

At least Germans has climate goals. The US is pretending like 97% of climate scientists are all idiots, and that the planet is not warming even when the ice is obviously melting, and any warming is just happening all by itself with no apparent specific reason.

It sure is, by golly. Just look at all the most recent ice extent data that shows the ice is....oooops, thickening.... Greenland, Antarctica, The Arctic. Seems positively balmy in the minds of the 97%ers, huh? The reality is that with all the billions in subsidies, Germany still relies on its coal infra for a very large part of it's electricity generated power. They may have a "goal", but obviously, the goal is marketing, and not real policy.

No the US isn't pretending that 97% of climate scientists are idiots. We know most of them are idiots and were only sticking around for the funding they were getting from a Demo Administration. Specifically a BO peep Administration.

Exactly, whenever scientists have funding for something that means they are lying. Thats why I don't believe in atomic theory. Because the scientists who come out with research in favor of atomic theory are being paid by the government through grants. Since science is a profession and not a hobby they are definitely corrupt.

BTW, science funding can't happen without Congressional approval and congress has been controlled by Republicans for most of the 21st century. And Right-wing groups and oil companies have put billions in fake anti-global warming research.

 

I thought the planet cycled between ice ages, and warmed up, with or without man? Man cannot be the sole cause for the warming since warming would have occurred naturally, before the next ice age.
