I find it frightening here in Southern California that I can’t drive 30 minutes on the freeway without smelling someone ahead of me smoking weed. It’s going to be a problem.

Humor apart, I'm against cigarettes, imagine marijuana ... Who says that an individual is free to make a choice about how to kill oneself ... that's the one to be right, until that individual doesn't touch the right of other individuals not to share the same way to kill yourself. I defend my right not to breath the smoke of marijuana coming from a guy smoking "maria" next to me. Like I don't want smoke from cigarettes around me.
If someone's smoking in your space, that's pretty rude of them. I like pot and all, but other people don't and everyone ought to be alright with that. That said, smoking anything isn't great for you, but I've inhaled more smoke from sitting around campfires than I have from a bong, and nowadays I've switched to vaporizing my herb anyway. There's so many ways to consume cannabis and all of them are so much less harmful than tobacco that it doesn't really seem like a fair comparison to me.
If you smoked a pack of joints a day it would wreck you like tobacco. I don't know many who smoke that much weed haha. Both should be legal to cultivate for personal use.
Alcohol is pretty organic and it is a poison. Morphine is pretty organic also, but probably not something you want to be addicted to. Not to mention there are plenty or organic substances that are really poisonous. Just because it comes from the earth does not mean safe. However, marijuana is fairly benign for human beings to consume. You are more likely to die from your stomach bursting or lack of oxygen than from eating it or the actual contents of its smoke. I still would not say that smoking it is entirely harmless for lung tissue as breathing in smoke is not the most harmless thing to do. Let us not start getting into the realm of fantasy here. Pot is probably not the worst thing you will run into, but breathing in smoke is generally not a healthy thing to be doing overall so you would probably want to find out her methods of ingestion especially if your lung tissue is weakened or harmed.
I am a ton less worried about some marijuana than I am worried about the people texting. I cannot say I have ever been almost wiped out by some person smoking a joint that I can recall, but I cannot count the number of times I have almost been killed on the road by someone with a cell phone typing away. That is not to say I am up for driving while stoned, just that before that I would like everyone who cannot lock their cell phone in the glove box while driving to have it firmly rammed into their intestines through their ass. The reason I would not recommend driving while stoned here in floriduh is you really do not have the reaction time to avoid the idiots on their cell phones even if you are only doing ten mph.
I am not saying that smoking is benign. I accept the risks, just like tobacco and alcohol. I am an adult. As for alternate forms of ingestion, take your pick, candy, baked goods, pills course the candy and baked goods could be a serious obesity threat.
If you are truly worried about obesity long times spent riding the couch stoned out of your mind is probably not helping much. Not to mention the munchies while lazy is not helping much. Most of the fit people I know have given up the pot because it tends to make exercise a little harder because it makes you enjoy sitting around a lot more. I personally don't care, but I find most people who say they are motivated on weed normally just think they are. Just letting you know sometimes when you wake up from the weed haze you realize you were not as active as you think you were. It is one of the reasons I find it to be a pleasant drug I don't have the time for. It just doesn't really take you anywhere, but it is not terribly harmful if riding the couch is not a problem.
Marijuana is a vegetable, an agricultural product. If we take it off of the illegal market, it will be produced, transported and sold like ... salad. The cost for the consumer will be drastically lower, the farmers will earn more money and the criminal organizations will lose a giant business. In the brief term, the market can generate odd effects: like a not cheap price [because of the increasing demand and the difficulties to meet it - if the local production is not sufficient, it's still quite difficult - and in many case illegal - to import marijuana from where the production is controlled by criminal organizations!].

In which sense? Imagine I'm sitting in the gardens in front of Louvre Museum at Paris. A guy seats near to me and he begins to smoke some "good stuff". Why should I move? He is doing something which annoys me, I'm not annoying him ... he should move to smoke his good stuff.
In other words, there is a mundane basic principle [also in right and law]: it's the annoying behavior to be stopped, if it "invades" the private sphere of an other. Let's think to the other way round. Our GSS [Good Stuff Smoker] is sitting in the gardens before of Louvre and I'm walking. He's smoking a very good stuff ... if I sit near to him and I ask him to stop smoking ... in that case I would be wrong. I can stay far ...
Why shouldn't you move? You are the one who is annoyed and you have the easy capability to remove yourself from a scenario in which you are being annoyed quite without inconveniencing others. Without being rude to them. He has the good manners not to be annoyed by you, pay him the same mutual respect. You finding other people annoying, is not reason to be rude to them. If you choose to take offence to people, you are the problem. Not they. There is no moral high ground in being a snowflake. It's anti social behaviour. Plain and simple.
