Anyone remember this little hill ?

Climbed it 2 1/2 times back in the days.

Someone must have dropped a dime to a liberal congressperson and complained that the hill had to many ruts and was to steep that it was politically incorrect so they graded the trail and this is what it looks like today.

I know that one very well. Mount Oedipus.

And they regrade it every few years, because it is also an emergency fire lane.

Oh man. I miss driving out towards 62 and listening to the artillery fly over me.

You haven't lived until you've been somewhere that has "Tank Crossing" marked on the roads.

62 Area, wasn't the night firing training range just east of Camp San Mateo ?

    Came across this.

Yup it does look like Camp P.

There was a hill like it just northeast of Las Pulgas 11th Marines which I used to run my battery up a couple of times per week. I was the training officer for the battery.

Yeah, the artillery flew over the road on it's way to the impact site.

Northeast of Las Pulgas ? Don't remember that hill, Must have been really close to the Whiskey impact area ?

"Sheep Sh*t" was just west of Las Pulgas. Another infamous hill aboard Camp Pendleton.

I've gone up that mountain 2 1/2 times.

Went up 1/2 of the way with a full field marching pack.

Half way up there's a small flat area, a plateau where we bivouacked at night.

Some stretches of Mt. Mutha-Fu#k were so steep you were on all fours.

Cool. Interesting topography on base. Ive done the mud run there and always thought it would be nice to spend more time there.

Yup it was Sheep Sh!t -- that one.

    We used it for P/T.

Northwest ... you @APACHERAT are right ... the impact area was to the northeast.

I have run up it about 100 times in P/T gear.

It's "Old Smokey" aka "Mt. Mother Fu#k" or "Mt. Mutha Fu#K."

Just south of the Camp San Onofre (52 Area) cantonment area.
Any Marine who went through boot camp in San Diego after graduation found himself going through infantry training at San Onofre and climbed Mt, Mother Fu#k at least once.

I've been told that they graded the old firebreak covering up all of the ruts and gullies and is now climbed as part of the Marine Corps boot camp "Crucial."
    It's been graded.

    Yep, those are wannabe Marines.
Notice the meat wagon bringing up the rear.

I wondered where the Hollywood Marines go for real Mother Nature type fitness training.

At Quantico there are plenty of muddy hills.

Never been to Parris Island though so can't say.

Where did the mud run take place, around 42 Area, Las Pulgas ?

There are many events that take place aboard Camp Pendleton every year and I have noticed many of the running and biking events take place in the area of the "Sheep Sh#t."

I remember during the 60's and 70's they use to open up the area just east of I-5 near Edson Range to the public on the weekends to shoot rattlesnakes with either handguns, .22 rifles or shot guns.

No sure it was another 10 minutes in from the main gate (near the mission). The Base Commander gave a cool speech, then it was a 10K in the hills and a few roads of Pendleton. Marines and Corpsmen along the route cheering people on. Took the "back" way home off base and passed a few ranges.

The base opens some of its ranges (including sniper ranges) to the public or a few clubs. Its a pretty exclusive list to get into one of those slots. So Im not sure I will ever get to shoot there.

Yes, clearly it must have been a liberal congressman. Here is no other possible explanation.
