Let's keep making weapons and one of them will kill all of us. Although, will die not all. The government and the billionaires will hide in the bunkers.
Greetings from outer space for stupid people)))

What do you suppose will stop one of these asteroids, if not those weapons?

We need a whole range of different technologies. Different types of objects will require different approaches. If you think of a thermonuclear bomb, it's a bad decision for big objects. It was obvious to Soviet scientists. This topic was thoroughly discussed in Soviet scientific journals. The explosion produces a lot of shrapnel.

I most liked the option of a laser. But it needs to quickly detect the object. As soon as the target leaves the Kuiper belt. After that, a spacecraft approaches the object and starts using the laser. The laser provokes the release of gases from the object. A stream of gases very slowly deflects the trajectory of the object. If this is done at a great distance, it is enough to deflect the object by a millionth of a degree and it will fly by.

The asteroid may be some Diety's little reminder that he does not approve of how we are treating his hard work. The next time it won't be a warning...

Wait. It is a lie! For if RT says something it has to be lying propaganda!

    Trump will.

We just have him eat a HUGE KFC meal, put him in an Elon Musk Rocket, blast him into space just in front of the asteroid and then get him to 'break wind'.

That asteroid won't stand a chance.

The smart money is on altering their trajectory early on using gravity or possibly a propulsive force on a craft designed to nudge against the thing. It would depend on a number of factors. But the last thing to consider is the "blow it up" option.

If that is how you really feel, why don't you, just put YOU, out of YOUR misery...I mean...if it's time?

Spare the rest of us your moral angst.

Calling people stupid is not a strong debate technique. However, I would suggest worrying about asteroids that may hit the planet, not one that will pass 39000 miles away.

Not sure why you choose to politicize this, somewhere out there is an asteroid with Earth's name on it and then most everything dies and Earth starts over again.

There's a better option - stop worrying about things that are out of our control, and enjoy 'tis beautiful Friday morning :)

Because Russia seriously discussed the idea of investing in technology to protect the earth from asteroids in 2010. But in the end, it was decided to invest 20 trillion rubles in weapons. Russia has invested an additional 7 trillion rubles in weapons in 2017. USA has invested $ 1 trillion in nuclear weapons. Political differences lead to the increase in military spending. After these weapons will kill and destroy or rot in warehouses. It's an idiotic way to spend resources.

Stopping a huge asteroid coming at Earth is a pipe dream.

To solve complex problems by small forces is the specialization of Russians.

"Huge" isn't being too exact, but certainly a larger mass would require more time and/or force applied to nudge it off its course sufficiently to stop it becoming an impactor.
