Who knows how molten the pieces were when the thing formed. I'm sure it's as old as the solar system.

Yes, that's true. In many cases, breaking an asteroid up into many smaller pieces may be very difficult. My point to the poster was just that if you can break it up, it's better to do that than having one big asteroid coming down on you.

In most cases thats right, but you agree this form is a challenge

you need many small parts. If you end with two big chunks i thin result stays same?

As one single part it may be easier to change it's vector.

Probably. Although maybe you could treat something like that as two linked asteroids: have two different Bruce Willis teams drill into the two main masses, then put a nuke down both shafts and detonate simultaneously. Difficult as hell, to be sure. But maybe not impossible.

interesting when you think about it the neck could also be a possibility. A nuke needs matetr to function in its most powerful way. If a nuke sits inside the neck and detonates at the right moment, it could push the two main parts away from each other so they miss earth.

Heh. Well, don't be too worried. The asteroid belt is actually pretty sparse by any standard we're accustomed to on Earth. Even the rings of Saturn aren't that dense when you get up close. We've had a probe passing through them repeatedly without incident.

I just wish the car's cameras had a lasting power source. It would be way too much fun to see it spinning past Mars. Granted, I don't know off hand how close it will actually pass by, but I know it crosses that orbit, at least from a 2D perspective.

If its a small asteroid just big enough destroy a building, I hope it hits the Capitol House side while Nancy Pelosi is giving another "Why I hate the white race" speech, to an empty chamber.

we could launch Hillary and park her next to it. The gravitational pull from her mass is enough to alter the asteroids orbital path. We just need a rocket powerful enough to get her into space which is the problem.

That is very close and it's frightening. What if it fell in the Atlantic, and not in Siberia as they usually do?

Close only counts in horseshoes. If it fell in the Atlantic it would produce a pretty spectacular tsunami. We all know that.

What if it hit the capital building while they were all in session, would the wars stop? I think they would.

Actually I think everyone in the world would be so happy they would be kissing one another - except maybe for the terrorists and Nazis. But then again without Washington's support, they would have no choice but to stop what they are doing and be forced to kiss and hug whether they like it or not.

A great Orthodox Saint in Mount Athos, when visited by an American congressman in the 90's refused to speak to him. The Saint said that without the US, there would be no wars. When Klitschko went to Mount Athos and tried to bribe the monasteries with loads of money to officially recognize the Ukrainian Church which was not under Moscow, they were upset on how he managed to get on the mountain. I guess you can't buy everything.
