The Navy has deployed the guided-missile destroyer Carney to join the destroyer Ross in the Black Sea in a move that U.S. military officials told CNN is intended to “desensitize” Russia to the presence of American military assets in the strategically important region.

The deployment of the Carney marks the first time in four years that two American destroyers have operated in the Black Sea outside of scheduled exercises. The move comes as Russia continues to militarize Crimea, the peninsula it seized from Ukraine in 2014.

In recent years, the U.S. and NATO have accused Russia of sending troops and military hardware to Crimea, and there are now reports that submarines have been added to the mix.

I remember reading something some where that the U.S. Navy had a limited access to the Black Sea. Forget how long a U.S. Navy warship can operate in the Black Sea before it has to leave.

    Found this.

Time for a full time aircraft carrier there.

Lets see what who denies us access.

That was the only reason why Turkey was allowed to become a member of NATO.

To deny the Soviet Black Sea fleet access to the Mediterranean Sea.

In wartime. In peacetime, they can’t deny them access.

During war time Turkey would try. It all comes down to which side Turkey is on.

During WW l Turkey was an ally of Germany.

Which led to the failed amphibious operation at Gallipoli by the British (actually the Australians)

After Gallipoli all of the worlds armies and navies though an amphibious assaults on a contested beach was obsolete and would never be tried again.

The U.S. Marine Corps saw it differently and spent the 1920's and 30's and perfected amphibious assaults.

Rule # 1. Get the **** off the beach ASAP !!!
