Good point. I mean, just listen to them: "The electoral college is a disaster for a democracy. The phony electoral college made a laughing stock of our nation. The loser one! This election is a total sham and a travesty. We are not a democracy! Our nation is totally divided! The world is laughing at us. Our country is now in serious and unprecedented trouble...like never before We can't let this happen. Lets fight like hell and stop this great and disgusting injustice! We should march on Washington and stop this travesty. He lost the popular vote by a lot and won the election. We should have a revolution in this country." http://www.cbsnews.com/news/donald-trump-calls-electoral-college-a-disaster-during-2012-tweetstorm/ Uhhhh ...
Because all those others are serving local areas and the office of President serves all of us and not just California and New York.
You must be fully unaware of the fact that no western democracy determines its head of government through a popular vote of the people.
OP, sure. Just a matter of time before EC is history. Add on all the teenager voters going to be registered once the age is lowered...and it is all Dems from there on out! Hide yer guns...the Dems are coming!
The Constitution does not require your state to allow you to even vote on the electors from your state, the legislature could select them.
The EC is one of the more brilliant inventions of our Constitution. Imagine if we had a national popular vote and some county up in New York has a close election and someone claims fraud and it goes to court and a federal judge issues an order to stay the ENTIRE NATIONAL ELECTION until the lawsuit can be adjudicated and of course then that has to appealed and then revisited and then make it's way to the SCOTUS and in the meantime someone else files a lawsuit and on and on. And if it IS a national popular vote then the voting becomes a FEDERAL function under FEDERAL rules and regulations and the FEDERAL government would have to oversee and conduct the election else someone in some state would file a lawsuit about equal representation and voting rights. And if anyone can screw up something it's the FEDERAL government.
And, with no winner declared by the time the current President's term runs out, the speaker of the house would take over and the election would not matter.
But it is related simply because the founders did not want to share power with anyone who was not of their class and stature be it slaves, natives or the poor white trash that filled each state as they grew in population. The idea of a democracy scared the elites so badly that they wrote it out of the constitution with one exception, the House. Yet here we are with a fixed number of house members set in stone decades ago when each congress critter represented a fraction of what they do today. Let there be no mistake, our nation was not founded upon the principle of democracy and the powers that be have been fighting to deny all of us the right to vote since our inception. It was only through changes in state eligibility laws that allowed most whites the chance to vote. Blacks just got their rights returned in the 60's. The EC is an abomination, it rewards one citizen far greater power than another citizen merely because of the state they live in. And because the constitution is very difficult to amend especially if an amendment takes power from smaller states, this lawsuit may be the only remedy for those of us, American citizens, that demand equal protection under the law.
And we were on the verge of that happening in Florida 2000. Had not the SCOTUS stepped in and stopped all the nonsense the Florida legislature was prepared to choose a slate of electors and submit them to the Congress for certification.
Nope the Congress then selects someone to act as President until it can be resolved and there is no formal procedure in the Constitution to do that. It's NOT what we want to happen.
Well as long as we just don't mess up the system we have to such an extent that it begins to answer to majority citizen opinion.
Democracy scared them because history already told the story of democracy and the oppression it brings on the minority and the ultimate failure of that system of government. It was also to get the smaller states to join the United States and ratify the Constitution which they would not have done had it established a Democracy on a national level. And the Constitution does not make the House a democracy, it gives the House the power to establish it's own rules of order. The EC is a brilliant concept for a union of STATES and the FEDERAL REPUBLIC which represents those STATES to choose the executive officer of that FEDERAL REPUBLIC. That is NOT going to be changed by a lawsuit.
Where did I say that? Quit putting words in my mouth. Quote my post if you cannot fairly and accurately state my position. To show everyone how silly your OP claim is about how it is "liberals" complaining about the electoral college, of course.
The United States was not intended to be a democracy. It was intended to be a representative constitutional republic. There is a vast difference between the two. A direct and pure democracy is two wolves voting to eat a sheep, whereas a republic is a system of checks and balances that protects the minority from the mob rule of the majority. The electoral college mitigates that the titan-sized states like California shouldn't have the power to essentially veto the popular vote in the states of "flyover country", like Ohio. Instead, it balances the power of each state so that four states aren't deciding every presidential election. Yes, some of the smaller offices of our country are more democratically elected--like sheriffs for example. But those offices are not the office of the president because democracy can succeed at times on very large scales, but the Forefathers had the insight to say that on much larger scales it wouldn't work.
EUtopia and Ameritopia... The GlobalistMarxistHumanistProgressiveSJW set's aversion to the Electoral College system corresponds perfectly with their aversion to America consisting of a confederation of states....which is anathema to what they've envisioned for America....a centrally planned and dictated Utopia similar to that which they established in Europe 25 years ago (which is already crumbling....but you're not to believe your lying eyes)
You could be on to something. "The electoral college is a disaster for a democracy. The phony electoral college made a laughing stock of our nation. The loser one!
