According to CDC data, the gun suicide rate for white males has grown by 13% since 1999. The non-firearm suicide rate for white males has grown by 46%, or 3.5 times the increase of firearm suicides. The overall non-firearm suicide rate for all races and both sexes has grown by 48% since 1999.

It appears that it isn't white males with guns driving the suicide rate. Perhaps we should focus on suicide, not guns.

What can you do about it? If someone commits suicide, you can't punish them. It doesn't matter how they did it.

If someone wishes to end their own existence, for whatever reason, that is ultimately their decision to make. It is not the place of anyone else to become involved in the matter, nor is it the place of government to try and intervene, and dictate to these individuals that they have no choice but to continue existing when they have no desire to.

Except there is no evidence for a substitution effect

There IS evidence that if guns are less available the suicide rate falls

See post #2. What was the long term trend in the female homicide rate in Australia?

flippantly mentioning white privilege was insulting...historically, white males have always been the most 'successful' in this arena , females the least (they do cry wolf alot) as for blaming guns ? well after 15 years in Mental Health, I can assure you, short of everyone living in an institutional environment (especially us evil, privileged white males) , controlling the means does little , I never lost anyone on my watch but while out on pass or after discharge, they shot themselves,OD'd, hanged themselves, slashed wrists and throats and jumped , one guy even tried to set fire to himself, another drove his car into SF bay while wearing his dress uniform (and he was a tranny ,which is another topic)...so again, unless we all live in a rigidly controlled, institutionalized environment, controlling the means does little...I categorize this 'news' piece as just a back door gun control try

Have you done a literature search on substitution effect and impulse suicide?

Of Australians with guns commit suicide I shoulqd have my legal firearm taken away from me, despite what the very onerous police view as a justifiable reason for me having one?

Pray tell, exactly which firearm-related restrictions have actually been proven as capable of lowering the firearm-related suicide rate in a given state, and that there is no substitution effect to be had?

Police sometimes are able to talk a person down from 130' over the river, but it may be temporary as it is just about impossible to stop a person with a made up mind. When they are handed over to you I'm sure you do your best but you're only human and they're only human. Sometimes you can save them, but a stout tree or a heavy tractor parked on the side of the road after they're released is most likely going to bring death to a determined person at 90 mph.

I can find no example of anyone committing suicide by a machine gun - and back when machine guns were legal to buy without any requirements there were less mass shootings. Obviously adding huge restrictions on owning machine guns had lead to an increase in gun-suicides and mass shootings. To reduce suicides and reduce mass shootings, anyone should be able to buy a machine gun with no background check and no waiting period.

Well Captain Obvious, in areas with more guns people who want to commit suicide prefer to use them than other means, sounds like another useless study. That is why you specify "gun suicide" because you know that the total suicide rate is unrelated.

Oh really? Your own country is seeing the highest rate of suicide ever.

From the huffrag no less. So please tell us how those gun bans are doing such a great job reducing the suicide rate.

Prove even by anecdote, that people with no access to firearms say,
    Oh Crumbs !
    I can't get a Gun, I guess I shan't kill meself !

No, they still manage to commit suicide,
Explain how Japan has such a high suicide rate among Young People from ages 10 - 19 and no firearms used in those suicides ?
70 young people a day commit suicide in Japan.

Child suicide in Japan: the leading cause of death in children
Posted on February 27, 2017 OlivierPosted in Uncategorized

Japan has one of the highest suicide rates. A World Health Organization report shows it is actually 60 per cent higher than the global average (Lu, 2015). The country counts an average of 70 daily suicides and alarmingly children are also affected by this problem (ibid.). Since 2014, suicide has become Japan’s leading cause of death in children aged 10-19 (Oi, 2015) and the rate of child suicide keeps rising[IMG] despite the decreasing overall suicide rate (Whitman, 2015)!

The main reasons for child suicide are school-related issues such as demanding school work or bullying. These problems lead children to depression. Kenzo Denda, a professor at Hokkaido University, reports that in Japan 1 in 12 primary school students and 1 in 4 secondary school students suffer from depression, which causes many of them to commit suicide (Lu, 2015).

You're wrong. The total suicide rate is related:

"After we controlled for these characteristics through conditional logistic regression, the presence of one or more guns in the home was found to be associated with an increased risk of suicide (adjusted odds ratio, 4.8; 95 percent confidence interval, 2.7 to 8.5)....

"Ready availability of firearms is associated with an increased risk of suicide in the home. Owners of firearms should weigh their reasons for keeping a gun in the home against the possibility that it might someday be used in a suicide. (N Engl J Med 1992;327:467–72.)"

The decision one makes to end their own existence is ultimately their decision to make, and theirs alone. It is neither the business, nor the place, for anyone else to get involved and interfere with their decision on how to proceed on the matter. It is not the place of the government to dictate that an individual must continue existing when they have no interest in such, nor to protect the people from the consequences of their own decisions, no matter how foolish they may be seen by others. It does not matter what implement is utilized, if someone has made the decision that they no longer wish to continue existing in this world, they will ultimately put an end to it, and there is nothing that can be done to stop them.
