On June 6, 1944, Allied troops invaded Normandy, France as the beginning of a long campaign to liberate western Europe from Nazi Germany in World War II.
The D-Day landings were to become a triumph of planning, courage, determination and willpower. Many of the men who landed were just teenagers. Some of those who survived the landings and the subsequent campaign are still alive to tell their important stories today.
The name “D-Day” simply means the day of the beginning of an operation. Operation Overlord, as the invasion was codenamed, began one day later than planned due to rough seas and poor weather.
More than 156,000 troops -- about 73,000 of them Americans, the rest British, Canadian, Indian, Pole and French -- invaded France on the first day. Some landed at one of five landing beaches, while paratroopers dropped from the sky behind the lines.
The five landing sites were codenamed Sword, Juno, Gold, Omaha, and Utah. At Omaha Beach alone, nearly 4,000 men were killed and thousands more wounded.

You have to wonder if the millennial 'Snow Flakes" of today would be capable of accomplishing what their great grandfathers were able to accomplish then. Come to think of it. I doubt they would even be capable of passing basic training.

I guess the millennials on this board are avoiding this like the plague because they know the truth is that they've been feminized and neutered by the PMS Left....

D-Day was both heroic and tragic. Heroic in that these men did their duty with honor and courage. Tragic that so many men died. From what I've learned, our air force missed bombing the German bunkers by long distances. The weather was bad that day, they couldn't see the ground and were afraid of bombing their own troops, instead they missed everything and we took a punch from the Germans.

My dad was there. He was eventually wounded in the catastrophic Battle of the Bulge battle in the Hurtgen Forest by a German mortar round.

He told me as he was airborne from the explosion, he saw the small creek they were near running red with the blood of American soldiers stuck fighting a Panzer division w/small arms, as they had separated from their own armor. Big intelligence blunder...then he woke up in a hospital in Paris.

I find it very strange sometimes that Democrats whine about the number killed in Iraq and Afghanistan during the Bush administration. Meanwhile they were very quiet about the numbers of G.I.'s killed during the Obama administration. Funny during WWII, I don't remember Democrats whining about the 4,000 killed during the Normandy invasion, Tarawa, Iwo Jima, or Okinawa. Could anyone imagine the reaction of the Democrats today if there was a "Battle of the Bulge", or "Khe Sanh" in Afghanistan, or in the M.E.

So was my dad. He was in North Africa first then sent to England after the Sicilian Invasion. He landed at Normandy the day after D-Day. Actually 74 years ago today. My dad was originally in the National Guard 14th Regiment N.Y. If he were alive today he'd be 105 yrs old in December of this year. Yes, my dad was wounded a few times but never got the million dollar wound.

The uncle ( my mom's brother),I was named after survived the Normandy invasion only to be killed in a jeep accident in Germany after the war ended.

My dad was stationed in England during the staging for the invasion and was the last family member to see my uncle.

Hope a certain athlete reflects on the meaning of D-Day

Nothing like that would ever happen again. Our left will never fight, no matter what the cause is.

Well, they would go after Trump. That's as militant as they would get.

My father's unit was at the Battle of the Bulge. He eventually received a medical discharge.

My uncle landed a couple of weeks after D-Day, was wounded twice, the second one (Nov or early Dec 44) ended the war for him, an artillery round landed on the other side of a half-track while a few of them were standing around drinking coffee, the shrapnel tore his legs up pretty good and he spent a few months in a hospital.
The last time I saw him I finally asked him about his time over there and to my surprise he really opened up, he got out maps and we spent an entire afternoon talking about it.

If they had the technology of today’s “snowflakes”, the Normandy assault would never have happened.

If todays snowflakes were around during WW ll there would have been no Normandy D-Day landings.
They would have taken to the streets demanding that America surrender after learning that 1,696 U.S.Marines and sailors were killed and 2.101 wounded during the landings on Tarawa in 1943.

The lessons learned at Tarawa at the cost of lives and blood saved tens of thousands of American, British and Canadian lives on June 6, 1944.

The war in Iraq had very low casualties compared to other wars America fought. The Iraq war American casualties were around the same as during the Philippine Insurrection.

More American troops were killed in Afghanistan during the first four years of the Obama administration than during the entire eight years under the Bush administration. That's easy explain, Obama's rules of engagement favored the enemy and caused American troops to bleed and die in the name of political correctness.

Or they would have demanded the government actually improve the garbage equipment and outdated tactics those Marines use that resulted in unneccesary casualties.

Of course it had absolutely nothing to do with the fact that Obama sent far more troops to Afghanistan than Bush did after he ignored the source of 9/11 so he could fight his unnecessary war of choice in Iraq.

As I’ve previously noted, I had almost the same ROE under Bush in 2003 in Iraq that existed in Afghanistan under Obama.

Actually the government and the military brass listened to the troops who already been in combat during WW ll. The generals wanted to keep the Browning .30 cal and .50 cal water cooled machine guns. The troops wanted the air cooled machine guns. The enlisted Marines wanted the Ka-Bar and they got their Ka-Bars. Both Marines and soldiers said spending all of that time being trained in Jiu-Jitsu was a waste of time, Americans back in the day weren't snowflakes and learned how to fisticuffs while growing up and that's all they needed to know when it came to hand to hand combat.

    FYI:
You know there were two separate wars in Iraq.
The first war of regime change that was quickly won.
The second war that the Bush administration should have called the Iraq Insurrection just as the Spanish American War that was quickly won and the second war that quickly followed known as the Philippines Insurrection that had about he same number of American troops killed as in Iraq.

Yeah, I’m sure the water cooled machine guns would have been worth more than say, fully armored Amtrak’s with overhead cover and APC’s for every infantry unit.

Bush’s version of the Philippines Insurrection had the same ROE that Obama had in Afghanistan.

By late 2002 early 2003 Al Qaeda and fled from Afghanistan and went into hiding in Northern Pakistan or moved operations to Yemen and the Horn of Africa while the Taliban got their butts whooped and also fled to Pakistan to lick their wounds.

The Taliban watched what was going on in Iraq and then noticed what was going on in America and said "those stupid Americans are making the same mistake that was made during the Vietnam war, the same people (liberals) have politicized the war and aren't supporting the troops." So the Taliban started returning to Afghanistan.

And then Bush ignored Afghanistan and reduced US presence there to almost nothing so he could fight his totally unnecessary war in Iraq allowing the Taliban to regain its strength and reassert its influence.

Water cooled machine guns can fire the whole nine yards without changing barrels.

But water cooled machine guns are only good being used as a static weapon and you don't win battles without advancing and engaging the enemy.

Weighing in at over 100 lbs, you can't advance that fast on the battlefield. And you always need a water source.

The M1917 Browning machine gun is a heavy machine gun used by the United States armed forces in World War I, World War II, Korea, and to a limited extent in Vietnam, and by other nations, it was a belt-fed water-cooled machine gun that served alongside the much lighter air-cooled Browning M1919, it was used at the battalion level...
the Model 1917 was slowly phased out of military service in the late 1960s in favor of the much lighter, and more suitable for modern warfare, M60 machine gun.

Bush surrounded himself with neoconservatives who are liberals and have an agenda like all liberals, nation building.

Afghanistan should have been fought as a punitive action war. It wasn't.

Iraq...President Clinton did little for eight years to solve the Saddam Hussein problem.

Iraq didn't surrender during the first Iraq war. (Desert Storm) Only a cease fire agreement was signed and Iraq kept violating that cease fire agreement for over ten years.

In 1998 every member of the Senate and 202 Republicans and 157 Democrats and 1 independent in the House voted for regime change in Iraq while 9 Republicans and 29 Democrats voted against regime change.

Four years later after British intelligence fed President G.W. Bush with fake intelligence, regime change time came.

The Iraq war was poorly executed.

The Bush administration ignored the Weinberger and Powell doctrines.
(The Powell doctrine required that 500,000 troops be put on the ground. Impossible because President Clinton dismantled the Reagan military and only capable of putting 200,000 troops in Iraq that wasn't large enough to occupy Iraq after the mission of regime change was accomplished that allowed the allowed the Iraq insurrection to happen.)

    No exit strategy.

The Iraqi military should have been left in intact.

The U.S. military should never be used for nation building.

U.S. soldiers and Marines aren't in the business of winning hearts and minds. That's the business for Army Special Forces not army or Marine grunts.

Where do you get this idiotic idea that punitive expeditions would work against non-state actor international terrorist organizations in a globalized world?
