Romanian man moves to Turkey and lives there for over 20 years. Eventually Turkey deports him for having expired paperwork, so he is no longer allowed to work in Turkey.

However, during all this time he has been absent, a death certificate has been issued in his name. The court in Romania refused to recognize Constantin Reliu is still alive because he did not try to appeal his death certificate soon enough. But the man had not known about the death certificate because he was living in another country.

We are talking about a poor man who probably could not easily afford to travel.

So now this poor older man is not legally allowed to work in Romania because they refuse to recognize that he is alive, even though he showed up in court in person.

It's like he's trapped in a bureaucratic nightmare and the Romanian authorities don't seem to care.

Dump him in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean with cement shoes and be done with it. That man can't legally live anywhere now. He'll be nothing but a homeless man with no hope of respite.

Romania, heh? I don't know the numbers but there are about a gazillion Romanian, professional beggar gypsies who don't pay taxes anyway. If he is one of those (and I assume that he is) then somebody is trying to make a mountain out of a mole-hill with this story.

... furthermore here in Sweden, we have had a number of cases of Balkan gypsies who have been reported dead and his family have been collecting insurance money in Sweden for that. But actually, the guy is alive and doing undeclared "black work" in some other country. In other cases it's a mother or grandparent who's reported dead but is 'back home' alive and well. So putting two and two together .....

Interesting, so you think perhaps his wife collected insurance money after he left and the Romanian court believed the husband may likely have been in on the scam, so perhaps they're refusing to restore his status as punishment.

It is possible or perhaps the Romanian government just does not care to cut through the legal red tape to verify his existence. Gipsies are not well-liked in the Balkan countries.

I think your suggestion is the most likely. Gipsies are not easily "pegged down" and even when they are caught red-handed in petty crimes there isn't very much the police can do to them except toss them in jail. What good does that do? Giving them a fine is pretty much a waste of time as they usually don't pay taxes or have a job that can be a source of holding back wages. Generally, gipsies are side-lined and ignored. Nobody wants to deal with them or even see them.

Not sure what he is complaining about. If he isn't "alive" then he can't be charged with any crimes. Time to start robbing some banks...**** YEAH! I wish I had his problem.

I was going to say it was unusual that someone doesn't have a record of having worked, and most Roma don't.

No. I was just recognizing the hopelessness of the position of the man who lost his legal status.
