    American steel would have a hard time competing due to high wages and benefit packages no matter what. Years ago American steel manufacturers closed their plants in the USA because of constant strikes which drove up wages and benefits. In 1980 Volkswagen opened a plant in the U.S and hired mostly unemployed steel workers to assemble cars. The first thing they did was to go on strike
    and eventually VW closed the plant. Pennywise and pound foolish.

    America's trade unions were the biggest factor of America's "rust belt" and is why America no longer really has an industrial base today.

    It started before NAFTA and globalization. During the 1970's the biggest threat to America's steel industries wasn't China but Japan who had modern steel foundries and were able to produce steel at a lower cost. But Japan went further, dumping Jap steel at cost in America hoping to put America's steel industry out of business.


    During the 1980's Japan tried to put Harley Davidson out of business by dumping large rice burners in America at cost.
    President Reagan stepped in and put a 49% tariff on all large Jap rice burners saving Harley Davidson.

    This is true until congress exempted the president and VP from it according under Title 18 Section 208 of the U.S. code.

    Read again: Nike isn't advertised by government officials. Nike can, of course, use government officials who the public appreciate as a way to promote themselves. They have that right because it is their government. Or rather was....
